Bandfest in Heavy Showers

 Bandfest
Wednesday, December 29, 2021
Robinson Stadium - Pasadena City College
Pasadena, CA

My alma mater is in the 2022 Tournament of Roses parade!  Bro bought tickets for us to see them at Bandfest, and the event happens rain or shine.   The forecast would not change from "Heavy Showers" for 2:00pm no matter how many times I refreshed my screen in the days leading up to the event.

Bro and I met outside the stadium.  I parked on the 2nd floor of the structure and tried to get him to to do the same so we could be beside our cars and watch from there in case the rain got bad.  But he didn't, and the rain never came down too hard for us.  It did shower most of the time, but we stayed at our seats, wearing our rain gear, for the whole show.  We don't know why the guys handing out the complimentary REMO drum and stick stared at us before we motioned that we would like one, please.  Boys, wake up!

For some reason we couldn't figure out, the drumline from the Santiago HS Sharks Marching Band was part of the warm-up group.  I think that our collective drumming really was just a rain dance because it just kept pouring down.

First up was the Tournament of Roses Honor Band.  They wore their casual uniforms under their Honor Band rain jackets.  I was jealous.  All we got when I was in that band was t-shirts.  We don't know when this happened, but there is now a rule that they are the only band allowed to play "Everything's Coming Up Roses" during the Rose Parade.  The announcer also said that the band is comprised of musicians from PCC as well as from all over Southern California.  What?  When did that change from just San Gabriel Valley area schools?   The announcer said that there were triplets in the band, from Norco HS.  Hey!  That's where my friend's son plays!  I'm sure she knows them.  They played several songs before going to the track to set up for their final pass in front of the stands.   I still like those herald trumpeter fanfares.  Their snare drummer is tiny compared to them.

I wondered who the next band was when they were getting ready, because they weren't wearing uniforms.  Oh, it was Arcadia.  Do they not have casual uniforms?  Bro said they wouldn't match anyway because they have shirts for the different sections.  I mean, they weren't even wearing the same length of black pants.  Nor did they all have the same poncho color.  I don't know why they uncovered the banner: the feathers around each letter got all wet and droopy.  They played their competition march from this year, as well as "My Country 'Tis of Thee".  They looked sharp despite their no-uniforms, and sounded great, too.  Since they were supposed to play in the 2021 Rose Parade that didn't happen, they allowed the drum major from that year to march alongside this year's drum major.  Awwww....so sweet.

Next up were the bands from two high schools in Waukee, IA, which comprise the Waukee Schools Combined Band.  When they were invited to be in the Rose Parade, there was only one high school in Waukee, but since then, they've split into two schools, and got together to be in the parade.  I think that the guard skirts are supposed to resemble flowers, because of their pretty flags.  They played "76 Trombones", which, I learned, is because "The Music Man" was set in Iowa.  Their town has a population of 20,000.  Announcer guy said that there would be that many people just standing at the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado.  I think that's an exaggeration.  I thought that maybe the band member uniforms had treble clefs on the front, but I think that's wrong.  When they played their military medley, a guy seated a few rows in front of us got excited when they played his theme.  I think it was Army.  I remember that he was saluting during the National Anthem, so that made sense.  Yes, I took off my hat for the anthem, even though it was raining.  A bunch of people just stood at the left side of the field because they didn't want the woodwinds to play for some reason. IN THE RAIN. I would not have been happy with that if I was one of them, and I would have spent the rest of my school year trying to learn an instrument that would get me into a drum corps.

Then Mira Mesa's "Sapphire Sound" took the field and I got really jealous on behalf of my school.  They had new uniforms, their TofR emblems, AND fancy ponchos!  Bro and I decided that their band boosters must be very involved and generous.  Also, their band director has won many awards, and Bro and I realized that this must be how Mira Mesa got to be so good.  Sorry, my friend who is an alma mater of the school, but MM wasn't that well known for their band several years ago.  They played their field show music.  I just briefly looked at the video from their performance and got all jealous of their ponchos again.  If I go to a music club meeting, I might start pushing the need for ponchos because climate change is REAL and we might need them.

Downington's marching bands came next, one at a time.  The first one from the West played their field show music, but it was odd because there were long breaks in music because the pit probably would have played during those times.  The four female drum majors wearing Latin-style dresses to fit the theme of their field show.  They had ponchos, too, but I was not jealous of them.  I'm telling you, those MM ones were FANCY.  The second band, from the East, also played their field show, but it was more lively, and the musicians moved a bit more while still marking time.  They had a majorette, whom was wearing a regular majorette uniform, which is practically nothing.  She was COLD.Then the two bands combined to make one big ensemble.  I asked Bro why some of them had hats that almost resembled Carolina Crown's, and he said that was how you could distinguish between the two bands, as their uniforms were the same in order that they could do events like this together.  They only played one song during their pass in front of us.  I hope that they have more songs to play on New Year's Day, because that's a long trek to just play one song.  As it was, we already heard it 3 times just on the track.  Maybe they'll trade off with one school playing their own songs while the other rests.

The Salvation Army band was small, but mighty.  They used music stands and Bro hoped that their music was laminated.  We think that the announcer called the tambourine players "timberwolves".  Maybe "tambourwolves"?  I don't know.  Anyway, they played hymns that I knew but couldn't remember all of the words, except for, naturally, "The Saints Come Marching In", because that's my family's song.

Last on the field for the day was Tennesseee State University Aristocrat of Bands (NOT The Aristocats).  They ROCKED it!  I liked watching the drum majors do their thang, as well as the drummers.  They did a full field show, complete with formations.  I wanted the Sophisticate dancers' hooded capes.  They were white with silver lettering, and they looked warm.  They're like the ones I covet at marching band awards ceremonies.  They had leggings that were one leg tiger, and the other leg was shorts.  I didn't really care for their uniforms, just the capes.  I did like the tiger flags, though.  The performance made me want to go home and watch "Drumline".  I got up to dance/march along with them at one point because the announcer told us to.  Not a lot of people joined me, though.  I'm such a dork.

That was fun.  Wet, but fun.  I hadn't eaten lunch, so I went to In N Out and discovered that they have hot chocolate!  That was exactly what I wanted to have , after all of that time in the cold rain.  I'm glad that New Year's Day will be the typical beautiful Pasadena weather for these bands.  They deserve it!

SG Ep 9: One Lucky Day

Squid Game

Ep 9:  One Lucky Day

The final one!

  • No restrictions from violence.  So brutal, those Korean kids.
  • Inspector Royale.  Perhaps I should have named Cute Detective that.
  • The giant Red Light Green Light girl has a Squid Game barette in her hair.
  • "Good rain knows the best time to fall."
  • Oh. My. Gosh.
  • TEARS AGAIN.
  • You don't bet on the horses to kill each other, though, Mr. Bad Brother Front Man!
  • A year later, and he's still taking the subway?
  • Oh, he's not using any of the money.  But what about his daughter?
  • Wait.  What?  That gold card from his gganbu?
  • Why was there only a number for the one floor on the elevator?  The other buttons didn't have a number.
  • I TOLD you that there was something going on with player 001!!!!!!
  • Aw, FG's little brother. I'm crying again.
  • Lady, don't be leaving all of that cash lying around like that!  My goodness.
  • Oh, yay, he's going to visit his daughter.   Get on the plane!  WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!!?!?
  • I'm freaking out now.  His poor daughter.
So I guess I'll write again next season?  I don't know!

SG Ep 8: Front Man

 Squid Game

Ep 8: Front Man

I'm way too into this!  Finalist time.

  • They get new outfits!
  • Feisty Girl has a shard in her.  Eewww, and ouch!  Hang on, FG.
  • Hmm...formal wear in a formal triangular dinner setting.  Last meal?
  • The walls have illustrations of the previous games.  Creepy and cool at the same time.
  • Cute Detective, you are not hiding yourself very well.
  • Oh, no.  They were all left with one steak knife each.  I'm worried.
  • Noooooooo!!!!!  CD!
  • I was wondering if the brother was in on the game, because CD hadn't found him yet.
  • Seong Gi-Hung, they're not going to help her!  They just keep letting people die, duh.
  • Did Business Man kill her off?!? Oh, Feisty Girl, I'm sorry.
  • They need to save the 2 of them for the final game, huh?
That was a short one.  Dinner time.  It will NOT be steak.

SG Ep 7: VIPS

 Squid Game

Episode 7: VIPS

Stopped crying.  Now on with the show.

  • She's alive?  Because they didn't want anyone to be left out?  Is Crazy Lady going to win this whole thing?!?  Because that will just piss me off.
  • Cute Detective!  He's on to you!
  • A baked potato.  Are they going to play a potato sack race?
  • I just now realized that this is like The Hunger Games.
  • How many times have they done these games before?
  • OMG, just pick one!
  • I would be so freaked out about the glass and the height that I'd probably just go over the edge on purpose.
  • Grossed out with the brains falling out after that one lady fell.
  • VIP also thinks Detective is Cute.  Too bad he's too smart to satisfy VIP.
  • Juicy!  Crazy Lady vs. her Babe.
  • Three left now, and Cute Detective is doing some SCUBA.  Rescue them, CD!
We're down the home stretch!

SG Ep 6: Ggandu

 Squid Game

Episode 6: Ggandu

We're back!

  • OK, we know the Frontman was not the head of this whole thing, so maybe he is not Thanos.
  • Who does Cute Detective think he's calling?  And what would he have done when the big boss answered?
  • Yikes, with the people hanging as examples.
  • Oh, Crazy Lady.  You are so irritating.
  • Their partners are their opponents?!?!?!  Nooooo!
  • Then they have to play whatever marbles game they think of?
  • "Your stories are a bit too dark, even for me."
  • I'm so disappointed in Seong Gi-Hung, taking advantage of 001.
  • I'm also disappointed in Business Man.
  • So the lesson is to not trust in anyone playing the game.  Feisty Girl is so right.

This one was heartbreaking!

SG: Ep 5 A Fair World

 Squid Game

Episode 5: A Fair World

Eating umbrella cookies in tribute of the fallen from Episode 3.  I know what you're thinking: she's binge watching AND binge eating!  I have no comment.

  • Phew!  The strategy worked, no thanks to the crazy lady.
  • Wait.  So they're NOT burning everyone?  What?!
  • What exactly are they scanning when they scan the pinks into that surgery room?  Because it can't be their faces.
  • Surgery scene made me pause in my enjoyment of umbrella cookies.  Ewwww.
  • There is too much crazy going on now, with the doctor losing it, and the Pinks going rogue.
  • Oh, so the Frontman knows that they were stealing the bodies for parts?
  • Doctor's gone now.  No more surgery scenes.
  • So the Frontman is some kind of lunatic egalitarian.  Kinda like Thanos?
  • I'm worried about Cute Detective getting caught.
  • Oh, poor Player 001.  Maybe he's not a plant after all.  Yes, it took me this long to agree to that.

SG Ep 4: Stick to the Team

 Squid Game

Episode 4: Stick To The Team

Guess who got to have a homemade chocolate chip cookie for dessert!  Thank you to the niece!

  • 101 and his team are a$$holes.  I don't know if you've noticed, but I am NOT rooting for any of them.
  • Ooh, cute detective is a superior now!
  • What is going on with the people doing surgery?
  • For those who can read Korean, do they know what is written on those pink slips?
  • This is why we need to feed people.  HANGER.
  • How did they all get weapons?  I mean, besides Feisty Girl.
  • Where did he get that needle?  Did they all keep their needles from the last game?
  • Yeah, that's not obvious, going to the bathroom at the same time.  They are a dysfunctional couple.
  • I don't know how she ever trusted him in the first place.  Dummy.
  • Business School guy is also kinda sexist.
  • Oh, no.  Tug of War from that high off the ground?!  I'd rather have mud.
  • I love that 001 is the strategist for this one.
  • A cliffhanger!
Stay tuned!

SG Ep 3: The Man With The Umbrella

 Squid Game

Episode 3: The Man With The Umbrella

In case you're wondering, yes, I had ramen for lunch.  It was yummy.

  • They're forming alliances now!
  • That lady is crazy, but she did help our feisty girl!
  • What is that green stuff?  Slime?  Jello?
  • "Hey!  Triangle!"
  • Ooh, the pinks are writing messages in the bread.
  • Are they being fed something so that they're craving sweets?  So they'll want sugar?  All of a sudden, they wanted something sweet.  Hmmm...and now I want something sweet, too.
  • Oh, Seong Gi-Hung, acting like you're at a restaurant and choosing chocolate milk.
  • "I'm willing to bet that when you were a kid, you got spanked a lot."
  • Wow.  Don't give prisoners a sharp object, yo.
  • Dude, I'd rather just be a cleaner.  Or are the tasks different for them every day?
  • So these crazy stair mazes.  You can just go whichever direction?  Who is helping him?
  • I'm worried about the cute detective.  What is his superior going to tell him? And what is he going to do with the square kid's mask?

Off to look for something sweet!  I shall look for it while singing "A Fella With An Umbrella" from Easter Parade.

SG Ep 2: Hell

Squid Game

Episode 2: "Hell"

I'm freshly showered, and we're in hell.  Seems like a metaphor for something.  Here we go with episode 2!

  • Those big cremation boxes look like the one from the claw machine.  Hmmm...
  • Wait.  That person was still alive?!?!?
  • My first thought was "what about that last rule where they would end the game if a majority wants out?  Question answered, and I didn't have to wait until, like, episode 5 for them to figure that one out.
  • They did have a point, though: out here in the real world, it's bad, too.  They just have to follow the rules to stay alive and maybe get some cash.  Not that I'm volunteering.
  • "This is just a game."  Suddenly, all of the sportscasters and/or athletes that say that just seem so insignificant to me right now.
  • I love that the prize money is in a big piggy bank.  Just like the game is for kids, it's something kids would use to stash their money.  Except not in a clear one, because you really shouldn't let people see how much they can steal.
  • How dare Seong Gi-hun swear on his mother! And then she ends up in the hospital. See? Don't do that!
  • The slippers in the hallway of the dorm!  So classically real.
  • Hey...it's that box again!
  • That boss was just playing games on his PC instead of working to get some money to pay his staff.
  • Ooh....cute detective.
  • The cards are back!
  • I think that Player 001 is a plant, or a ringer, or something.  He's supposed to have dementia, but he remembers Seong's face and his number?!
  • Hmmm...eating ramen the crunchy way with seasoning, or maybe that was soy sauce?  I don't know, but I've never thought of doing that...and now I want ramen for lunch.
  • "Out here, the torture is worse."
  • OK, let's say the gangster gets his people to attack the person driving the van. How would he know where to go in order to get the money?  Does he think it would just be on the GPS and that they wouldn't be armed at the entrance?
  • I guess my people don't use guns.
  • You see, some people in debt look like fancy businessmen.  His poor mom.
  • I'm rooting for the girl now, too.  She's feisty, and she loves her family.  I mean, her methods aren't so good, but I'm still rooting for her.
  • I'm also rooting for the guy that let his boss' hand get smashed and ran away with his cash.  Should I worry about myself right now?
Ready for the next one, Player 456?

SG Ep 1: Red Light Green Light

 Squid Game

Episode 1: "Red Light, Green Light"

I had discussed with some folks that I want to watch "Squid Games" on Netflix, and decided that today is the day I would start binge watching the series.  V wanted to know what I thought, and I have too many thoughts to text after the first episode, so I'm going to write them here.  If you are familiar with my blog format, you know that I don't review movies like a movie critic.  It will continue this way.  Also, there will be MAJOR SPOILERS in every post.  I might start just doing a pseudo-live blog and write my thoughts as the show happens, but I'm not sure yet.

  • OK, so this guy has got major financial issues.  Gambler, steals money from his mother to gamble some more, and he owes money to loan sharks.
  • Make soup out of his blood?  From his nose?  GROSS.
  • Who puts a lighter shaped like a gun in a claw machine filled with plush?  How sadistic are the people that provide the prizes?  And why didn't he check what was in the box before giving it to his daughter for her birthday?  Also, why didn't he just buy one from the kid?  I guess he does everything the hard way.
  • The daughter is so cute and forgiving.  I'm rooting for her.
  • I've never played the game that they were playing on the subway platform.  Maybe I'll make a couple of those things while I'm watching the show.  But I'm not going to play for slaps.
  • I don't know about being willing to get into some stranger's van, but I guess when you're desperate, it's just another thing to do.
  • I'm worried about rooting for player 001.   Am I allowed to root for more than one person?
  • Dude, that giant doll is creepy with her motion-detecting eyes.  And, oof. Brutal.
  • So why did that guy help our main guy by holding onto him?  I should really learn our main guy's name.
  • I do like the premise of using childhood games because people will usually know the rules already, and they're fairly simple to understand.  Unlike the Squid Game the narrator talked about at the beginning.  I'm still a little bit unclear about it.  Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention?
  • That frontman.  Can't someone just steal his suit/mask to access his private suite?
  • Who is narrating?  The frontman or our main character?
I'm intrigued, but I need to take a shower.  It was a long Disneyland Day yesterday.  Be back in a little bit!

Let It Be Everly

The Everly Set

Saturday, August 21, 2021
Scherr Forum Theatre
Thousand Oaks, CA

Bro, V, and I decided to have dinner somewhere near the venue, and we were disappointed that Umami Burger is no longer at that location.  So Bro found a Brazilian place that was not churrascaria, and we agreed to try that out.  They had a table available outside, and we were happy that we could sit there and observe other tables of patrons with their dogs.  One of them was a silver labrador retriever, which I had never seen one of before.  He and another dog, a husky mix, played a little bit with each other.  They were both adorable, and somehow Bro refrained from stealing one of them.  I wasn't able to get a good angle to take a surreptitious picture, so that y'all could see the adorableness.

Oh, and the food!  The food was quite yummy.  Moqueca is named for their specialty dish, which is a type of stew.  Due to food restrictions, I refrained from ordering that dish, but Bro and V really enjoyed theirs.  I had the Pastelzinhos (beef empanadas) and a side of Banana Frita.  We also ordered special cocktails.  I had a caipirinha, which was kind of like a mix between a margarita and a mojito, and I was happy.  We were all happy!  We would like to go back there again to try more stuff, like dessert!

A Toast to A Great Find!

Complementary toast with fixings.
One of the fixings was spicy.
I ate the eggplant one, which was not.

Moquecas with Shrimp

Moquecas with Seabass

We then went to the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center, and after we parked, I had to get a look at the poster for the current season,  because look!

Looking forward to February!

The Scherr Forum Theatre is the smaller theatre located downstairs from the larger one where we saw "The Book of Mormon".  KP and Wanda were at their seats, and KP said that she had already seen Sean three times when she was in the lobby.  Their seats were front row house right, and our seats were front row house left.  Bro's seat was on the farthest left, and I'm glad he sat there because I wouldn't have liked to sit next to the wall. I guess they can't have an aisle there if the performers use that space as a walkway from the stage.

I learned a lot about the Everlys during this show, but I didn't take any notes, so I won't be listing each song.
  • We probably wouldn't have The Beatles or Simon and Garfunkel as we know them without the Everly Bros, because both groups wanted to replicate the Everlys' tight harmonies.
  • Jack does all of the rock 'n' roll moves because he is young and energetic, while Sean mostly stays stationary with his new hip.
  • The guy in tonight's band playing the bass guitar, Jon Spurney, won three nights on Jeopardy!  I knew I had seen him somewhere before.
  • We do not know why one of the drums was just laying down on its side.
  •  Drummer Nick Potters played the melodica.  APPARENTLY, V also has one that I don't think she's ever shown me.
  • The Everlys had to sing right next to each other because of the microphone for so long that a lot of tension built between them and they didn't speak to each other for about 30 years.
  • Sean and Jack changed costumes just for the last song.
  • They performed their last song without mics, like Rockapella!  So nice to hear "Let It Be Me" that way.
  • We asked why there was a guitar on stage that was never played.  Jack told us that it is there in case Sean breaks one of his strings, which happens often.
We talked to them at intermission when we bought our Everly Set CDs.  Sean seemed to remember me once I told him my name.  He said that when I had requested "Fliptop Twister" for a personal YouTube video during the height of the pandemic, he had to go over the song because it had been so long since he last performed it.  I had requested "Home", "Fliptop Twister", and "What A Wonderful World (That Would Be)", as a dedication to Bro, since SEan is his favorite Pella member.  We had tried to get him to do a house concert at Bro's house, but that didn't work out.  Maybe when things are less crazy and he has some time to stay around, we can do it.

Afterward, they had a bit of a meet and greet, and JT's bro, Andy, was there, so KP asked  Andy to take our pictures.  Thank you, Andy!

TA-DA!

As per usual, we were among the last ones to leave.  It was great to see Sean again, and also great to be at a concert!

The next morning, we learned that Don Everly had passed during the night.  I think that the Everly Set unknowingly played him a great send-off.  May you rest in peace, Mr. Everly.  Thank you for your music and for influencing so many people.  I also hope that your family, especially son Edan, stays strong.  He was very nice to us when we met him at the Frankie Avalon show.

Next show for me to see at this venue: ROCKAPELLA!!!!!

Santa Clara Vanguard 2021 - "Wait For Me"

One more post for the drum corps stuff this year.

We didn't go to Indianapolis this year, and neither did Vanguard.  But Vanguard did make an appearance via this video, and I finally watched it tonight.

Thoughts from my initial viewing:
  • Mikey!
  • How did they keep those uniforms so clean?  Even with one performance, all of that dirt must have gotten somewhere.
  • I hear some Asian influence in the music, which is beautiful and serene.
  • Mmmm..shades of other shows.  Warm smiles.
  • Those are cool drums!  Where are those from?  Is that from another show I'm not remembering?  Or maybe these were supposed to be in their 2020 show.
  • Nice rifle catch!  Yes, I'm aware that there were likely multiple takes, but still, nice!
  • WHERE did that hight note come from?!?!
  • I didn't understand the design on the flags at first, but when they kept them still, I finally saw the V.
  • Ah, that ending.  Gorgeous.
  • Crying now as I write this.  There really is No Place Like Santa Clara.
As I was writing this page, V was texting me and I told her that I had tears in my eyes because of SCV.  She asked if I had watched Galen Hooks' short film on which this is based.  So I did.  Now I'm crying again.

Until we meet again, Vanguard.  March On.

You can check out other (mostly unofficial) 2021 performances on YouTube, like Phantom Regiment's tribute to their 2003 show, "Harmonic Journey", which was the fan favorite. (Uh oh, I'm crying again).  I will not be posting about those, but I hope you peruse and enjoy!

Rose Bowl
Pasadena, CA

This event started a bit later than previous ones at the Rose Bowl, so we decided to get dinner at Panera near my house.  I told everyone to meet us at my place, but Double N read my email incorrectly and went straight to Panera.  He's usually not late, so I wondered where he was as we sat and waited for him.  Well, perhaps I should also check my phone to se that he was already there!  That's OK, it's close by.  I had this yummy Strawberry and Poppyseed Chicken Salad.  Then I gave a bunch of it to Bro because it had a lot of stuff I couldn't eat.  But I'd still eat it again without all of the acidic stuff.

Bro didn't feel like driving, so I drove us to the Rose Bowl, where I had already been earlier in the day to see Dinosaurs.  We couldn't see them very well from where we lined up to enter the Rose Bowl, but here's one for you guys today, thanks to Linda.

That raptor is the precursor to today's Color Guard.
Who knew?

They parked us on the grass.  I paid to park on grass?  There weren't any official markers to show where I parked my car on the grass, so I made a mental note about the car's juxtaposition a couple of trees, trying to picture what they would look like in the dark.

Oh, cool.  They had much more food available for the event than I had anticipated.  I wasn't hungry but that's good for the people who were.  I got a bottle of water in case I got dehydrated.  By the time we got up to our seats very close to the top of the stairs, I was grateful to have the water but also anxious about drinking it because I didn't want to have to go down the stairs to go to the restroom only to come back up again.  So I told my friends that if I left to go to the restroom, I would sit at one of the seats closer to the bottom.  I never had to do that, but at least we had a plan.  Our seats were part of the Pacific Crest block because I had a couple of free ones to which I had added on.   The location might have been OK if the top gate was open because they had access to other restrooms there, but those steps were no joke. After we caught our breath and I didn't look so tired, we took a selfie.
We made it!

The Star-spangled Banner was performed by the Freelancers Alumni Corps. They then performed some other stuff.
  • "Happy Days Are Here Again" sounded much better today.
  • I liked the jazzy number more last week than I did today.
  • "Sound of Silence": Double N knows this is the Disturbed version because he's a regular at Karaoke night.  It makes me miss the Mandarins.  Yup, that's a Mandarins shirt that Dodie is wearing in the pic above, so just an additional trigger.
  • They played Malagonia and Bro told me it was "One More Time Chuck Corea".  Why isn't it "Chick"?  Bro doesn't know. The crowd really liked that one, especially the little kid a few rows down from us.  Bro looked for the piece online and played it for me, and also played "Malaguena" for me.  I texted Rudy about it, and he said that he misses one show and I gotta go and get legit. Bro said, "When I don't come, you guys make up names of songs."  Well, yeah.  Then we noticed that other people were looking up other versions of both songs on their phone. See how helpful it would be if we had a list of songs people play?  They weren't in the digital program, which was the same one from the other shows.  Even announcer Ryan T didn't tell us.  Free us from our ignorance, oh wise Bro!
GOLDEN EMPIRE
  • Missing SCVC from hearing music from their "In Pieces" show.
  • Missing SCV for that mellophone sustain.
  • Vanguard alum a few rows in front of us were gave them a standing ovation.  They probably noticed their shows in the music, too.  Bro and I wondered who is on staff there, reviving some stuff from the Vanguard family.
  • I told Bro about the really good rifle guy.  Rifle Guy did NOT let me down!
This picture is blurry when enlarged.
But look!  It's rifle guy mid-toss!

  • Drums got to do their battery feature
  • Dodie figured out that Edelweiss is actually "New World Symphony".  I informed Rudy. Bro was still trying to understand why we just made up names for stuff.  This is Golden Empire's corps song, so we tried to figure out when we saw them play it.  It was 2014, their first year.
GOLD
  • The lights went out as they entered the stadium.  Ryan T said that under the black cloud that usually follws him, this was not his fault.  I mean, they have candles on the tables, they don't need light, right?  The lights turned on as they set up, though. (Is this deja vu for some of you?  That's because I wrote this on the report for the Ontario show because...well, because I'm rusty at this blogging thing!  I'll get it together someday.  But I reserve the right to remember anything I watched where my notes are wonky because I'm inebriated.  I have edited the other report.)
  • "Kill the Lights" by the color guard.  We laughed at the irony of the song's title.
  • "Night of La Reve"
  • Knock, knock!  Aw, I'm missing Spirit of Atlanta.
  • I sway my hips when they do.
  • "When You Wish Upon A Star": glad Rudy wasn't there to pinch me.

PACIFIC CREST

  • Yay! No tarp!  Bro aid it's because the Rose Bowl doesn't allow tarps on their field.  I would like for all stadiums to adopt this rule.
  • I need to see "The Rocketeer" again.  I love that music!
  • Trombone Choir: they did some kind of fanfare.  Double N said that if Tim would have been there, he would have said something about them not belonging there.  Aw, I miss Tim.
  • "Insight" from PC's "Everglow" show
  • "Ave Maria by Biebel

We never get to see the view of the Rose Bowl sign at night when we're here because of the location of our parking, but we got to see it on this night.
Also: Honda

We made the long trek down the stairs, and I was able to find the car.  I told Bro that it was by the trees. He saw a lot of trees.  I told him I knew which ones, and I was right!

Well, that's it for the live drum corps for this year.  Sadness.

I am looking forward to next year, DCI's 50th.

Blackbird Fly

 So Cal Arena Showcase

Tuesday, July 27, 2021
Toyota Arena
Ontario, CA

I finagled things at work so that I could work from home this day, because I didn't want to deal with a farther drive to get to Ontario.  I had agreed to meet Rudy at a nearby movie theater because I didn't want him to pay the outrageous parking fee for his car.  Our meeting place was at Ontario Mills, and I went to the AMC.  He had texted me that he parked his car, and I couldn't remember what his car looked like.  So I called him and asked him where he was.  He said that he was parked next to a tree.  OK, Roo, there are many trees here.  Then he said he was going to wait for me at the curb of the theater, but I didn't see him there.  That's when I realized that he was at a different theater.  Duh, Sherry.   So I picked him up, we got gas so I wouldn't have to get it later unaccompanied in the darkness, and drove to the Toyota Arena.  Our parking was very close to the building itself, which was a good thing, because as we walked up to the arena, I saw the sign about clear bags.  I forgot to look for my clear bag earlier in the day, so we walked back to the car for me to get rid of my non-clear bag and just deal with a wallet, my keys, and my notebook/pen.

The arena was nice and cool, such a respite from the heat outside.  I do miss watching drum corps in an indoor venue.  Our seats were on the right side of center, about 3/4 of the way up the stands.  At first, I wondered why we hadn't seen any drum corps events in this venue before, but when I saw how much space the first corps' pit was occupying, I realized that while the big corps would fit into the space, they wouldn't be able to do drill without marching all over each other.  Rudy and I took advantage of the little postcards they were distributing, and scanned the QR code for the program, which was helpful when I wrote the trip report from the Sunday event.  Alas, they did not list "Malagonia" or "Edelweiss" in any of the listed repertoire.

Tonight's event was MC'd by Dan Delgado of the Dan Delgado Sextet.  Their a combo of Dan on trumpet and lead singer, a saxophone player, an electric bass player, electric guitar player, keyboard player, and a drummer.  Dan said that when COVID happened, they couldn't do anything that had to do with marching anymore or any big ensemble work, so he put together this sextet.  Dan started out his drum corps career at 14 years old, marching in Pacific Crest in 1999 (Dracula!), and has done staff work with different corps.  So he was familiar with what goes on and I really appreciate that.  Also, the group is good!

Dan Delgado Sextet
I don't know names of songs, so here's what I know about the ones they played.
  • "Hi dee hi dee hi dee ho"
  • Jump Jivin'
  • "I Wanna Be Like You" -- I knew this one immediately when Dan mentioned Louis Prima, because of Disney's "The Jungle Book".  Rudy did not know about this jazz legend contributing to the movie.  I also knew all of the words.
  • "Just A Gigolo" -- OK, I know this one, too.
  • Something about "American" -- with dancers!  I think I might know one or two of them from my attending dances at the Pasadena Ballroom Association
  • "Sing Sing Sing" -- Hey, I knew 3 of the song names!  Go, me!
Dancers

Golden Empire
  • Not-Edelweiss happened.  We still don't know the name of this song.
  • The kid in back of us loved the rainbow flags.  I loved to hear him voice his pleasure from his gut.  Kid knows how to use his diaphragm.
GE

DD6 played "Night Train".  I only know it's called that because Dan told us so.

Gold
Dan worked on the visual staff back when they were known as Hawthorne Gold.  He knows everyone!
  • "Blackbird" -- choir corps!  The kid in back of knew all of the words, and the song got in his head, so he sang it at other times during the night. That's some good parenting, teaching kids Beatles music.  :)
Singing in the Dead of Night

  • The front ensemble played a piece.  I think it was called "Etude", but that's way generic, so maybe I'm wrong.
  • "Kill the Lights" -- performed by the color guard.
  • The battery played an interlude.
  • "Speakeasy" show music.  It was fun to have all 14 of the contras come up to the front at the end of that.
  • Gold's corps song, "When You Wish Upon A Star". Rudy pinched me because I didn't know what song they were about to play.  So I pinched him harder.  There was a lot of pain and giggling at the same time.
Love those shiny gold drums!

DD6 played the theme from "Godfather".  I told you that those tables and candles reminded me of that movie.

Pacific Crest
Dan said that when he marched PC, they had white pants, which were unflattering.  I remember those!

  • "The Rocketeer" -- nice guard work!  Did they just lick their symbols?
  • PC Trombone Ensemble played "Donna Terra" and "Shenandoah"
  • "In The Real World Now" featuring vocalist Ryan
  • "Feeling Good" -- love that trumpet solo and big double purple/pink flags

  • DD6 played Rihanna's "Umbrella" with the horn line -- they rehearsed that together just before the show started, and they sounded great!

  • "Life on Mars"
  • "Insight" from their 2019 Everglow show
  • "Ave Maria"
I really enjoyed this showcase thing.  It was nice to see the performers do something other than the regular drum corps show, and now I want to book DD6 for an event somewhere.  Not that I have a big party to throw, but that would be fun!

Driving Away

Ohmygosh, you guys.  The ordeal I just went through.

I had a lovely dinner with my very good friends, food made by a spectacular and wonderfully accommodating chef, on a warm summer night in DTLA.  That's Downtown Los Angeles, to all of y'all country folk.  When I got back to my car in the underground parking lot, I opened the driver's door and in flew a HUGE BUG.  I quietly screamed behind my mask.

The bug was flying around inside my car and was probably confused and didn't know how to get out.  It might have been a big moth, but I don't think they have those in DTLA.  Big cockroaches, yes.  With wings, though.  Now mind you, I’m not that squeamish about roaches, but I've only seen the ones with wings when I've been in the Philippines.  Or Texas.  I don't like the ones that fly because yikes!  Whatever it was, I wanted it out of my car.  I opened all of the doors to my car, hoping that I could guide it out of there. But I couldn't find it.

I don’t know if it flew out when I was trying to open the doors but I didn't want to risk it surprising me again, so I closed the doors, turned on the car, and opened all of the windows and the sun roof.  I couldn't wait around to see it because I needed to get home and go to the bathroom, so off I went.

Mind you, this parking area had many, many levels, and as I wound around and around to get to the ground floor, I listened for that bug.  Nothing. When I finally exited the structure, I was aware that I was in DTLA and maybe shouldn't have all of my windows rolled down, but there weren't that many people walking around, so I risked it.

As I drove on the freeway, air was whipping through the car, and my very long hair was whipping around, too, some getting in front of my face because I didn't stop to tie it back.   I kept trying to get it out of my face without driving recklessly and without letting my mask fall off, because you know what would happen?  That bug would probably surprise me again and I didn't want it to fly into my mouth mid-scream.  You know, because then I really would have caused an accident and I still needed to pee.

I thought I could hear the bug flapping its wings and trying to fight against the wind.  Going 80 mph, I thought that it had to be taken by the air somehow, right?  No, I'm not crazy enough to think that I was outrunning the bug.  I just thought that the violence of the wind would throw it out of there.  I also don't know if what I heard was the bug or a couple of turtle-killing straws that some fast food person had forced into my hand against my will.  But I heard something back there, and it wasn't the drum corps music on my car stereo.

When I finally got home, I opened all of the car doors again, but couldn't see the bug.  I forgot to look for the straws.  I just hoped that it didn't get tangled in my hair.  I looked in the mirror, and I looked like Witch Hazel from Looney Tunes.  Like, if I could dash away quickly, bobby pins would drop.  Bobby pins that clearly I wasn't wearing before.  But now I'm dreading that the bug is going to still be in my car when I leave in the morning.  Wish me luck!

The DCI Celebration Begins

 DCI So Cal Classic
Sunday, July 25, 2021
Duarte High School Stadium
Duarte, CA

Drum Corps is back!  Kinda.  Last year's season was entirely canceled due to COVID-19, but this year, many of the corps are back for what they are calling a DCI Celebration Tour.  Since many corps organizations opted out this year, the performances are all exhibition only, with no judges, no competition.  SCV and Blue Devils are among those whom opted out, and since it's still kind of scary out there, we will not be going to Indianapolis this year.  I'm sad about that, but I'm also a little relieved as it would have just been a bit more stressful to deal with whatever protocols are in place (if any) in another state.  So I'm just going to go to the shows that are nearby this year.

First up is so close to me!  I can't believe I've never been to Duarte HS before because I've lived in this area all of my life, but I guess my school isn't in the same league as them.  Anyway, Rudy and Dodie met me at my house so that we could carpool.  We parked behind the school at the senior community center, and I was, like, "Hey, that's where my dad gets lunch for three dollars!"  Rudy figured out the way to walk to the stadium, which is very nicely kept.  It reminded me of the one at Santa Clara, where we would attend SCV Family Day.  Aw, SCV.  I miss you.  I had our tickets on my phone, but we needed wristbands, so we checked in and they had my name listed.  It was like Family Day!  We even got cool wristbands.  I couldn't stay away from the aguas frescas, so I got a large mango drink and some kettlecorn.  I mean, tradition needs to keep going somehow, you know?  We bought 50/50 raffle tickets after I clarified with the guy that I was not getting 5 tickets for $10, and instead was receiving 10 tickets for $5.

Custom wristband!

Seating was general admission, and we sat on the right 30-yard line, about 3/4 of the way up the stands.   It was a warm day, and I'm glad that I had braided my pigtails because more hair on my neck = more heat.  We were separated from people for the most part, so I didn't wear my mask.  Also, I was eating and drinking and writing and entirely too distracted and hot to wear my mask.  I'm just glad that I'm vaccinated.  Do you see that, people?  Get vaccinated!

Our announcer was none other than the Voice of Southern California, Ryan T.  I said that he didn't have so much gray hair before, and also said that I didn't have so much gray hair before, either.  As he was reading something, he said "u-nyke" and then realized that the word was "unique".  I may be using that in my vocabulary now.

The Star-spangled Banner was performed by the Freelancers Alumni Corps.  Oh, yay, and there was a flag on the pole!

Freelancers Alumni Corps
I think they were the special guests of the day.  I don't know because I didn't scan the QR code to get the program; I was too excited about food and drink.  They performed at a standstill.
  • "Happy Days Are Here Again" - I liked how I couldn't figure out what they were playing until the main theme.
  • I didn't know the name of the next song, but I did see someone's music being blown away by a gust of wind and thought, "I hope they have that memorized!"
  • "Sound of Silence" -- Nice baritone solo!  Or is that a euphonium?  I need to learn these things.  You'd think I'd know by now, but I don't.
  • Some Spanish jazzy latin song that we really liked.  Rudy suggested that the name of the piece was "Malagonia" because it sounded like "Malaguena", but wasn't.
Golden Empire
Their corps is much smaller this year, marching 16 horns, 12 color guard, 11 pit members, and 21 battery.  So that's 16 total horns and 32 percussion.  WHOA.  Rudy said that they were wearing Vanguard baggy pants, a la Babylon.
  • Nice ballad, especially the baritone solo. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a baritone.
  • Mello sustain!  (They ARE trying to be like SCV!)
  • That rifle guy is really good!  I would tell you how many times the rifle rotated during his high throws, but that's too fast for me to count, especially when I'm only thinking about counting it 6 days later.
  • Yay, a drum cadence!  I mean, with that big battery, there should be one.
  • The horns played something that sounded familiar to us, but Dodie and I know it was not "Edelweiss", as Rudy suggested.  Have I told you that Rudy likes to mess with me?

When I went to the restroom, I felt bad that I forgot to wear my mask while passing by all of the people in my row.  I tried to keep my head down so that I wouldn't breathe in their faces.  A woman in the restroom was frustrated with her kid being all squeamish about a roach in the corner of the stall.  This is a very different scenario than the one that I experienced a week ago.  You'll get a glimpse of it when I finally post the DLR LotD from that adventure.

Gold
Looking snazzy with the shiny gold drums and shiny white and blue uniforms!  Props on the field were tables with candles, and the drum majors were dressed like 1920s gangsters.  I thought that maybe they were doing a "Godfather" show, and I told Dodie about Blue Devils' 2006 show, "Godfather, Part Blue", with their horse head flags.  Then I noticed the big door, and figured that it was probably a speakeasy.  I told Rudy, and he said, "Yeah, they just announced that the show is called 'Speakeasy'."  Oh, I TOLD you!
  • "Proud Mary" was their first song, and I loved it.  Doing that Tina Turner dancing thang, and I immediately missed when we would do that song during Zumba class.
  • "This is Dedicated to the One I Love".  Hey, there's choir corps!  I really like those flags with the moon and stars.
  • Their last piece during the field show was some jazzy swing number, and it was fun!  One of the CG gals did a cartwheel without using her hands.  I don't know what that's called.  I need to ask the niece.
  • "When You Wish Upon A Star" by the horns was very nice, and the main theme kind of snuck up on me.
Pacific Crest

Uh oh.  Tarps.

  • Great trumpet solo during "It's a New Dawn".  That whole piece is great.
  • Their show has something to do with an experiment.  It might be called "The Experiment" and I wasn't really paying attention because I was concerned about the tarps being on the field.
  • "X" on flags.  I like those, and the color guard does good work with them.
  • I like their drum major.  She kind of dances at some points, and she has a nice smile.
  • They played one of the pieces from last year's "Everglow" show.  That's the one with the music that would get in my head.  I like it.
  • They ended their program with their corps song, the Biebel "Ave Maria".

Afterward, we had dinner at Los Gueros, and I told Dodie about the horrifying tarp of Gold's 2015 show "Pop Star", with the Britney Spears music.  I had to whisper, though, because of what I call that thing.

Later that evening, Rudy texted to inform us that they never called the numbers for the 50/50.  HEY!  THAT GUY TOOK MY MONEY!   I don't know who to complain to about that, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't any show left to play by the time we walked out of the stadium.  Hmph.

At least we got to see some live drum corps!  Yay!

Next up:  So Cal Arena Showcase
