Front and Center with SCV

Today as I type, Santa Clara Vanguard is broadcasting "Front and Center" Gala as a fundraiser for the Vanguard Music and Performing Arts.  7 hours of non-stop Vanguard.  Well, except for when they have technical glitches.  Ryan Turner, "The Voice of Southern California" is emcee for the fundraiser portion.  Hi, Ryan!

I ate my dinner way early (easy when I don't eat lunch), and popped my kettle corn for munching later.  Then I made myself a champagne/peach vodka cocktail.  Because it's a gala people!

Cheers!

I was too busy remembering to blog that I didn't actually see what they showed for 1967.  Lame Sherry.

1972

Show is in black and white, and looking sharp!  These are just clips of the shows, but it already more than another corps did on their fundraiser night.  Nice solo!

1975

Ooh, color!  Love that red uniform.

1976, 1977, 1979

I mean, how did they march around with that tympani and not just fall over every night?

1977

What are those big wheels?  The drummers are wearing green while everyone else is wearing the red jackets.

1979

I love those white color guard boots.  I want a pair.  I like that the kettle drums are red and white now to match the corps.

Member profile: Troy, SCVC Drum Major, and first year member

1999 "Inventions for a New Millenium"

YAY!!!  That was our first year to go to Finals!  Hi, DM Michael! Hi, Kenji!  "VANGUARD!!!!"  Or because our friend Chun never came in on time, "Guard, guard, guard" (diminuendo, as an echo).

I told myself that I would donate a certain amount for each full show that they air tonight.  Now I'm scared.  Happy, but scared.

That's one so far, Sher.

Oh, and I commented about the drill and the drums on YouTube, and the esteemed Ralph Hardimon of SCV percussion fame smiled at my comment.  Happiness!

Cooking with SCV:  They posted what ingredients would be needed earlier this week, and now they are making Chicken Broccoli casserole, which the corps loves to eat.  Bro is cooking as he watches.  Bro and I have talked to one of the ladies talking, Jo Blatcher.  Whip it! Whip it good!

SCVC bass drum ensemble, playing a piece entitled "Enterprise".  Being responsible and wearing masks.

Robbie played synthesizer intro to 2013 Les Miserables show.  Nice!

Hello, Mr. Bud.  You're about to make me cry with the "Send in the Clowns" background music playing.  1974 horn arranger.  They won Finals that year.  1975, they played it for warm up before Finals, and they got 3 perfect 10s in General Effect.  Bud thinks this was the start of the Clowns legacy.  Yup, tears.

RT is flabbergasted that we're already over $54K, and our goal is $100K.  It's only been 1 hour. Out of 7.

1987 snare member and current graphic designer talking some Vanguard history.  He's creating hand-painted statues.  He's showing the one from 1987 Russian Christmas music snare drummer initial step-out.   He can customize by year, very cool!  Ooh, and you can tilt the drum!!!

Kristen dancing different moves throughout SCV time.  Nice cartwheel!

Elise - mellophone player in her 4th year with SCV.  She is an Impulse alumnus.  Her first show to see SCV was 2014.  She talked about being amazed at someone being so detailed that they polish their shoes, and making sure her star is perfectly straight.  She goes to UCLA.  Go, Bruins!

Next speaker is talking about hearing about the corps in the Spring of 1967, and how he learned to play the soprano bugle, becoming soprano section leader that fall.  He has 4 questions for us, but it sounds like it's for corps alumni, so I don't need to answer them.

Loving the aussie with the green feather in the background as RT tells us that we're already 2/3 of the way to our goal before the 2nd hour is over.  Oh, and to remind us that we need to take the chicken broccoli out of the oven at 45 minutes so as not to burn the house down.

SCV history time again!  This time, actually with Dan Vannetta (RT announced him too early).  Starting with learning drill and catching rifles in 1965 and 1966.  They were all-age and didn't leave California at that time.

Looking back at some show highlights:

1980: I like that spiral formaton!  The SCV star!  "Evita" and other pieces.  The shows were so random back then before they told stories with their music.

1982:  Bottledance!!!!

1983: Ooh, I like that jazzy brass piece.  Frilly umbrellas, how nice.  I just love any time SCV plays Appalachian Spring.

1984: Yay, they formed the SCV star!  I know I said that before, but it was a different type of formation, with the color guard, last itime.

Ooh, DCI Hall of Fame member Ralph Hardimon is about to talk to Dan Potter.  Ralph became besties with Fred Sanford after Ralph dissed the Ludwig drums.  They listened to Stoneground Seven and thought it would be a great drum solo, and used it in 1980.  He talked about 1981 being like magic, where everything clicked during Young Person's Guide.  They also talked about the meaning of "Vanguard".

We're past the $70K mark, and I we're not even done with the 2nd hour.  Usually quite a talker, RT is speechless.

Back to show highlights:

1985: That's a big green flag that they turned into a tunnel.  I wonder if that was the inspiration for the Scheherazade tunnel in 2004.  Oooh, it flipped into a flag of the shield!  Cool!

1986:  They now have a god sash, and the drum major is wearing a wig and beard.  They're telling stories now!  He's like some sort of wizard.

1987: So I'm thinking right now, SCV did a lot of Russian shows in the 80s, during the Cold War.  Were there haters?  I like those green drums.  Nice contrast from teh red / white uniforms.  Wait, is that the same wizard?!  Did I mix up my shows?

1988: First version of Phantom of the Opera.  No masks.  Nice CG dresses for "Masquerade"!  That Phantom is scary.

"Conduct with Us"

They provided sheet music on their web site prior to the show, and it's for Phantom of the Opera! (Music of the Night).  The current conductor is teaching us the push segment (closer portion), along with the DM from 1989.  Then they both conducted the end of the show, and I love seeing his embellishments.

We're at $81K and it's only 7:00pm!  Bro's casserole is now in the oven.  He needed to cook the chicken first.  The SCV ladies are eating theirs with biscuits and egg noodles.

DM Carl Huang is eating Doritos with chopsticks and watching the 2018 show on his couch while wearing his uniform.  I love it!  I wish I had Doritos in the house right now.

1989:  "Phantom of the Opera"

Full show!  I like that the pit members are wearing cute animal masks.  I wonder if Boston borrowed them for their Animal Farm show.  I love that drill during those runs.  Phantom mask is still scary.  Love those black fringe flags!  We saw that lady (with the close up of her hands framing her face) at the 50th anniversary gala.  I also like the black feather on the aussies.   And then the corps disappeared

"Send in the Clowns"

So. Many. Tears. On. Sherry's. Face.

I don't think RT realizes that most of us will actually be sitting here for all 7 hours.

That's not Dan Potter.  That's Steve Rondinaro.  He talked about seeing SCV for the first time, in 1972, I think.

Then Steve talked to DCI Hall of Famer Michael Gaines, current interim director of VMAPA.  He has a doggie named Kayak!  They showed video of him trying to teach Kayak to go down the steps.  This relates to teaching young people who learn at different paces and in different ways.  His fave show that he did not work on was 1989.

Show highlights!

1990: Carmen (not Carmen SanDiego, although that could be a fun mash-up) -- Ooh, "SCV" formation!  Oh, they had some of them playing from the Patriots tunnel at the end of the show.

1991:  Miss Saigon -- I like those big red umbrellas.  Nice fans!  I want one.  Or 4.  Helicopter scene!  That flag of Vietnam is hugigant.

1992: Fiddler -- Loving the touch of Tradition fringe from the Jewish prayer shawls on the uniform.  BOTTLEDANCE!!!!!

1993:  Festival Overture -- That's a pretty yellow on the CG dresses.  A crown and swords.   That is some fast drill.  See?  They have strips of flags that form a Chinese flag on the field.  There's also a big lotus flower.  Oh, lots of flowers.

Carl is back and listening to the mello sustain from outside his house!

Steve is asking us to punch COVID on the nose and donate to the Vanguard.

2018!!!!!

Full show!!!  I didn't realize before that someone dropped their mallet on the field before the dance break.  Love the way they jump up on the towers at the same time as the big drum hit.    Yay!!!  I love that show.  V texted to me "Hey bae" during the show, and somehow it showed on my TV.  Magic.

Steve said we could get thank you gifts with our donations.  They're already over their goal, and not even halfway through the evening.

Show highlights:

1995: Their drums are like rainbow shiny luminescent. What are those hypnosis things?  Nutcracker?  Oh, it's called "Not the Nutcracker".  See, this is why I love this corps.  They talk like me.

1996: I didn't really like those green uniforms, but at least they weren't offensive.

1997: This was the year I first saw a drum corps show live.  Vanguard doing "On the Waterfront".  Yes!

1998: Copland -- I like the CG uniforms of black with the gold trim on top.

Now we're showing a practice field and we're going to do some drill commands.  I did it without spilling anything while I got up!  I'm not drunk yet.

Oh, a guy is playing on a bunch of different instruments at the same time "Pure Imagination".   I miss drum corps so much that I almost sat through the whole song instead of going to the restroom. (I'm usually tired of hearing that song.)

Lizzie, the DM that conducted us earlier, talked about one of her first memories seeing SCV, playing Les Miz, and about becoming a leader.

OMG, now they're singing a capella.  And it's "Send in the Clowns".  They're trying to kill me with tears.  APPARENTLY, they did this on their own, the 2020 horn line.

With the shield!

Steve is now talking about what Santa Clara means to us.  He said that the corps has changed so much in style through the years, but the members continue to believe and excel with whatever the staff challenges them.

Innovation. Legacy. Excellence.

Dan has taken over the helm, with a picture of SCV in the background.  Did RT go to sleep?  He's so speechless he gave up?  Anyway, Dan said that we're about to go to the 2000s, and introduced 1981.  What?

1981: Full show!  Young Person's Guide, Evita -- The video is just from high up so I can't see anything close up.  They also won Finals this year.  I like that rotating semi-circle drill.

RT is back, and announcing that we've passed our goal.  So he's setting a new goal of $150K.

Hey.  They changed the aussie, and now it's closer to RT.  Maybe he was out borrowing it.

Matthew, SCV Contra since 2018 is talking about his first time at SCV audition camp, knowing that this was the place for him from day one.  Hey, I know that floor that he's sleeping on!  That's the floor at the Indy airport.  I know that place far too well, and I miss it now.

Chat with Sandi and Paul Rennick, percussion DCI Hall of Famers and SCV Caption heads.  I didn't know until today that they are siblings.  Paul likes being able to be at the table during the show design, so that the drummers are less of an accompaniment, and more part of the music with their solos.  They fought about the opening of 2018 with "My Body Is A Cage".  Their fave shows that aren't their own in SCV: 1987 for Paul, and 1999 for Sandi.

Carl is playing his video game, pauses, and hears that the mello sustain is still going.

Show highlights:

2000: The Age of Reverence -- That Agnus Dei!  So beautiful.  I like how the flags synchronize with the horns' sforzandos.

2001: New Era Metropolis --  Oh, yeah, I liked those purple and yellow flags!  New Era!  New Era!  New, new, new new era!

2002: Sound, Shape & Color -- Triangles, Ovals, and Squares

2003:  Pathways -- I like the drill to this show.  I also really like the music.  VANGUARD!!!!

2004: Scheherazade -- Bummed that they're not playing the whole show, because, SIGH.

Dan's favorite SCV show of the 00s: Ballet for Martha.  He said not to tell the other corps fans, but if someone told him he was stuck on a desert island, what one corps would you want to listen to?  SCV.  Me, too.  I thought they were going to play that next, but psych!

2005: Russia -- Oh, yeah, the star formation!  I remember now.  CCCP ==> USSR formations.  Thanks for showing the viper!

2006: Moto Perpetuo -- never stop moving!  I remember that one of the members was always marching around, even when they weren't on the field.

2007:  ! -- EUREKA!!!  We got to yell twice in that show.  I love that cymblas V.

2008:  3hree -- I forgot how bright yellow those drums were.

2009: Ballet for Martha -- OK, fo reals this time, but highlights only.  They showed my favorite company front of all time, though, and that beautiful ending, as the cymals lift up Martha.  So pretty.

Richard somebody arranged the Brass Mafia rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone", and they are playing in a beautiful woodsy setting.  Is that Muir Woods?

What does Dan think SCV means to drum corps fans?  Class.  Oh, yes.  I agree wholeheartedly.  I don't know why he turns it back to RT with a Hulk Smash, but RT received it, so OK.

The aussie changed again!  Wait.  Then he turned to the other camera, and it's back to the other view. I'm so confused.

A Conversation with Brandt Crocker, our famous drum corps announcer.  I love Brandt, even when he says that Vanguard is from Sacramento.  RT remembered that Brandt and his wife cooked for the whole corps in 2002.  All of a sudden, JW was on screen, and he talked about getting Brandt to be the announcer for a rehearsal.  Oh, there's a Hulk poster in RT's background in his house.  Brandt's favorite SCV year:  1999.  He told the corps that they would be the champions that year.  When they handed him the results, he saw the tie, and said "it was still a championship".  JW pushed him into the circle when they played "Send in the Clowns" at the encore, and it meant so much to Brandt that he realized that he is a member of the Vanguard family, and wouldn't trade it for all the tea in China.  Then I almost started crying again.

Executive Jeremy talked about the 2 new corps initiatives, with the help of Jennifer and Carl (sans mask).  Vanguard Emerging Leaders gives recent alumni a voice in the organization and provides mentorship opportunities for future leaders.  Jennifer also helped with the Diversity Equity Inclusion committee to show SCV's commitment to long-term systemic changes within the community.

Announce with Us, with Brandt Crocker and Friends!  His tip is to say it as one word: "The SantaClaraVanguard!"  What cute kids!  One of them looks like she's Lizzie's sister.  I love all of the SCV outfits.

CG members Tensegritty dance / spin to "Music of the Night".

Now there's a cat watching RT, and he changed positions!  I didn't see him walk over there.  It's Vanguard Magic!  Oh, he does walk.  So maybe there aren't two rooms, just different views of the same chair.

Carl is brushing his teeth now, and the mellos are still going.

Show highlights:

2010: Bartok - love the music during that circular formation.  Such intensity. Actually, I love all of the music in this show.  Leap off of those cymbals!

2011 -- Devils' Staircase -- This show was amazing.  I loved the source music and the creativity of their show's concept.  "Imagine you're in hell, and you want out."

2012 -- Music of the Starry Night -- I mean, MARS!  JUPITER!  And a viper!

2013 -- Les Miz -- I'm about to cry again.  Oh, yeah, the shield formation!

2014 --  Scheherazade 2 -- The pillows!!!  The lamp!  I loved the colors in this show, like that last silk that covers all of them.  Gorgeous.

RT is back, and so is the cat.  A special donor is going to match the next $5K.

2015 -- Spark of Invention (I forget what it's called most of the time and call it the Tesla Show).  I love that opening piano line.  That theremin!  Spooky.  Light 'em up, Vanguard!

2016 -- Force of Nature -- The tree!  The V in front of the tree!

2017 -- Ouroborous -- I LOVE THIS SHOW!  OK, I love most of the shows, but I really really love this show.  So innovative.  So Vanguard.  I don't know why the screen shows 2018 right now, because they haven't changed the show yet.  That flag block!!!  Ah,the rolling props with them inside!  Then the Clowns bit at the end.  Ahhh...

2019 -- Vox Eversio -- I still don't like those tarps.  I know it's only been a year, but... anyway, Leo's trombone solo!  Then Mikey's crazy high note!  They changed up the viper, even.

1974 -- Full Show!  -- A bunch of stuff from Wagner, Bernstein, and Sondheim.  The drum majors are marching around the field!  They won with this show, and I can see why.  Aw, Clowns.  That reminds me that for an icebreaker at work, the facilitator sang a bit of a tune from musical theater, and we were supposed to finish the phrase, then she would tell us which show it was from in case the others didn't know.  She said that Send in the Clowns was from some other show.  I told her it wasn't.  She didn't have her notes in front of her.  I said, "Trust me.  I know it's from "A LIttle Night Music".  I didn't go into why I know this piece so well, because I was being nice and didn't want to go into Crazy Sherry Drum Corps Fan mode.

The last hour's donations will be matched up to $5k again.  RT owes someone nickels and I don't understand.  Why doesn't he owe me nickels?  There's a private Facebook competition, but I don't know what he's talking about.

Drum Corps Then & Now: looks like a bunch of original corps members talking about the up and comers being in the position they were in way back when.  They are cracking me up with their attempt to be in synch with conductor Tim.  They said this was their secret Zoom group.  Thanks for letting us in, guys.

Dr. Rick Espinoza, soprano soloist during 1999 is telling us how to become a more successful performer.  We were provided the sheet music beforehand, but I don't know how many people are playing at 10:53pm that still have neighbors.  It is important that we think both vertically and horizontally.  During your solo: what happens right before the first note of your solo has an effect on your performance.

Danny V is back with SCV History.  He talked about establishing the Vanguard name, and the first year.

DCI Judge Alan Christiansen talked about marching with SCV in the '70s.  I didn't know that!  i just knew him as a percussion judge.  His favorite teaching moment was in 1987, when SCV got the first Kevlar drum head.  He came up with a technique that went with Ralph Hardimon's music and fit the show.

Some SCVC color guard members showed off some of their moves from inside and outside their homes.

A conversation with Scott Pierson and Rick South: talking about the aftermath of winning championships in 1978, and what happened in 1980.  1979 was a rough year, then the staff wanted more control over the programming part, to be more creative.  Fred Sanford called Scott and told him that Gail Royer wasn't going to do the arrangements that year, and asked Scott to contribute the closer for the horn line, which was "Jupiter".  He and Rick did most of the brass instruction that year.  Upon hearing the judges' comments, Gail stepped in and improved the show to the point that made the judges happy.

They played the a capella Send in the Clowns again.

We are just shy of $125K, and now there is no aussie in the background.  Maybe the cat took it and is wearing it whilsst touring the neighborhood.

We're drumming SCV 2012 now!  He's saying about a flam and two diddles.  I do not know what that means, but I know that it is drumspeak.  He just said, "Who doesn't love flams?"  Apparently I love flams, because I can't say why I don't love them.  Big V for Vanguard at the end!

Danny V is back and talking about SCV history and staying at Brookdale camp during their first tour.

Mr. Bud is back again, repeat from earlier.

Babylon logo!  Paul Rennick is talking about bringing "My Body Is A Cage" to the design team.  206 beats per minute!  (The 3rd movement, I think.)  The general sense is that music is communication.  I think this was from their pre-season segments that year.

Hey, it's Babylon again!  Yassss, drumline!!!  Riri said Hey Bae again.  So is this a recording of the earlier live portion?  I'm confused again.

RT made a correction:  Eric's name is actually Michael.  This is the guy that makes the statues.

I made my donation.  Thank you, SCV!

Bottledance with us!  At 5 minutes to midnight!  I'm going to just watch at this point.  Also, this room is not big enough for me to do that move.  Do you know that if you don't have kneepads, you can wrap a sock around your knee instead?  I just learned that today.  Also, you need to wear your hat/aussie.  IF you panic, you don't grab the hands when you get together with the others.  You have to hold everybody's weight, so it takes a lot of upper body strength.  This was the 1978 version.  So cool!  I have that tank top!  She's much more fit than me, though.  At the end, you "look up at all of the screaming people".

Carl is back, lifting weights, and letting the mello sustain continue.

Tim talked about getting the Jim Ott high brass award in 1987, and talked about the great Gail Royer.

Here's the brass section again with our song!  How am I not sick of this song yet?  Oh, yeah.  Because it just means so much to this corps and their fans.

I am looking forward to next year, hoping that we'll get to see our favorite corps lots and lots of times...and yes, hear "Send in the Clowns" LIVE.

There's no place like Santa Clara.  Love you, VANGUARD!!!!!

Wait.  Post-credits scene:  Carl is going to bed (in his uniform), with his cat, and hears the mello sustain still going, so he goes outside with his baton to stop it.  I'm giggling.  So silly.

Thanks for reading all of the drum corps posts this summer, even though I didn't get to see any shows.

Next up for the blog:  I have no idea.  Good night!

PellaPosse Palladium

So many people are bummed today: all of the people who would have been at DCI Finals today being a big bunch of them.  DCI is having a March On! Telethon to raise funds for the activity today, so here I am blogging about it as I watch.  Goal is to get 2020 donors.

Bro, V, and the kids were happily a part of my day today as they brought lunch for us all to eat outside on the deck.  They went to London Gastropub nearby because they had flatbread.  I also had various flavors of Stella Rosa.  The unanimous favorite:  watermelon flavor.  All of this was so that we could make our own little Tastings experience, as this would have been the day we'd visit our favorite Indianapolis restaurant.  Bro and I wore our SCV face masks while not eating, and we were wearing our SCV clothing.  They left because it was getting too hot and they can't really come inside to watch with me anyway.

The marathon is taking place on YouTube, and I'm glad I could start it from the beginning even though I was late, because I don't want to miss anything!

Steve Rondinaro was shown in Lucas Oil Stadium, talking about how eerie it was to be there without all of the drum corps activity.  DCI CEO Force Ghost Dan Acheson showed up with Blue Devils' Ghostlight prop, saying that according to legend, it would be lit until the next performance.  Nice.

At first when Steve started talking in the DCI offices, there wasn't any sound.  Live shows!

The festivities started with the Star-Spangled Banner, played, of course, by The Commandant's Own USMC Drum & Bugle Corps.

Fellow DCI commentator Dan Potter joined from his office, and they brought in fellow commentator Dennis DeLucia from his office.  I've been watching the videos of the different finals scores being announced through the decades, and it's been fun to watch Steve's appearance change as he aged.  I've only watched the 70s and 80s, and will watch the 90s and 00s later this weekend.

First "Run It Back" video:  2008 Phantom Regiment:  Spartacus

  • YES!  On the screen with Dan is drum major Will Pitts, Percussion Arrangers Paul and Sandi Rennick, Exec Director Rick Valenzuela, Show Director Dan Farrell, Brass Arranger JD Paul, and Program Consultant Don Hall.
  • Phregiment did Spartacus shows in the early 80s, but decided this year to change it up a bit and use different music, not just the Khachaturian.  They talked about the pre-show, which I LOVE.  Dan calls the different DVD shots of the pre-show "vignettes of cruelty".  They gave the performers some direction, but the performers are the ones that created their own characters.  Fun to hear them talk about the first time Will got speared.  Sandi's like me:  we cry every time we see the show.

Performance:  Jersey Surf brass (at home): "Pure Imagination"

Performance:  Troopers brass (at home): "Battle Hymn" by John Meehan

  • I like that they're even showing all 4 of the drum majors conducting them.
Dan A talked to Steve about what it was like to go from full speed ahead in January to a screeching halt in March, and planning for the future.  Furloughed teachers are still working with the corps.

Performance: Blue Stars brass (at home): "La Vie en Rose"

Flo Marching folks talked about their upcoming video: "DCI Rewind: The After Party"

Performance: Shadow brass (from their homes):  "Overture to a New World" by Bjork.   It was dedicated to one of the corps guys who died at 20 years old.  Sad.

Performance:  Distant Harmonies (River City Rhythm at home): "Hymn for a New Day"

Performance: Blue Knights: To Build A  Home (at home)

Snippets of people saying, "Drum Corps taught me..." were interspersed throughout the show.

Dan Potter talked to "Finding Drum Corps" podcaster Keith Kelly about his series.  I still need to listen to it.

Run It Back: 2013 Carolina Crown : e=mc2
"Two Lovers" is what I think of whenever I think of this show.  They have a lot of people on the screen talking about the "Purple Pants Band" and I'm too slow to keep up.  Except for the narration, I loved this show because the brass was tremendous!  I remember playing their rehearsal video over and over back then because I was so amazed by it, and it didn't include the narration.

Tribute to Blue Devils' first drum major, Davd Dugan & Jim Ott: Blue Devils brass (from their homes): Chuck Mangione's "Chase the Clouds Away".

Preview for Blue Devils documentary: "Nineteen in Nineteen"

Performance: a short tune from Spirit of Atlanta (at home)

Performance: a little ditty from The Cadets alumni (at home)

Performance:  Carolina Crown Brass and vocalist tribute to health care workers: "Smile"

Performance: Bluecoats alumni representing all years and current:  "Autumn Leaves" but with no sound.

March On Task Force leaders Stuart Pompel of PC and Vicki MacFarlane from The Colts talked.  Hi, Stuart!

Run It Back: 2016 Bluecoats: Downside Up
They gave Dan Potter a championship ring because he recorded the intro!  How cool!  On the screen is the design and instructional staff.  Shane's wink:  he did it during Prelims for the Big, Loud, Live audience, and was told not to do it for semis.  But then during finals, the cameraman put a sign on his camera stating "Wink Here".  The corps director loves hearing the crowd at that point, and they realized that changing the traditional uniform gave the chance for the performers to shine.

InStep leaders talked.  Just like on Finals Night, I left the room for this segment.

The directors from Open Class Corps Golden Empire talked with Steve, Dan, and Dave Edelman.  I like that they also talked about one of the aspets that this year's batch is missing is the socialization of being in a corps.  GE tries to have some social activities online with the corps members.

Run It Back:  1991 Star of Indiana: "Roman Images"
They talked about the famous "cross to cross" formation designed by George Zingali.

Performance:  Cavaliers (at home)  -- "Over The Rainbow" with video snippets of their 2019 show.  I didn't know their intro was the Coast Guard theme until just now.

Performance: Crossmen (at home) -- Great Gate of Kiev?

Video showing Gold's journey to getting their first Bronze medal in Open Class, for their "Pursuit of Happiness" show.

Performance "Virtual Strangers" by Colts Brass

Leadership Award for World Class:  Corps Director Stuart Pompel of Pacific Crest!!!!  Congrats, Stuart!
Leadership Award for Open Class:  Tim Heasley of Golden Empire

Scholarships awarded.

Performance:  Madison Scouts (at home) singing "You'll Never Walk Alone"

Performance:  Blue Devils B brass (at home): "Eternal Father, Strong to Save"

Performance:  USMC: "Music in Motion"

Aw, Dan Potter is talking about what happens when he's off camera during the telethon, and he and his wife are crying during the virtual performances.  They're worried for the activity.  So then I started crying.  Dammit.

Presentation of "Together as One", by Varsity Performing Arts, available for the next 2 years for anyone to use.  It's like a mashup "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "Summon the Heroes".

They reached a little bit over 1000 donors by the time the broadcast ended. I hope they reach their goal.

I don't subscribe to FloMarching, so I didn't watch the DCI Rewind: After Party.  Too bad, because they were playing both 2004 and 2014 SCV Scheherazade performances.

I'm going to go back and watch the Finals ceremonies from the 90s and 00s.  I'm going to look for us in the crowd even though I probably won't see us.

Next Up:  Santa Clara Vanguard, one more time for 2020

Phregiment Phandom

If this had been a normal summer, tonight would have been DCI Semifinals night.  I got a hot dog at lunch today because, APPARENTLY, I miss stadium food.  When I sent a picture of my food to Bro and V, Bro thought that maybe he should go buy a personal pan pizza and eat it 3 hours later.  I laughed and laughed.  Tonight, I'm watching DCI's broadcast of the Hall of Fame ceremony.  Congratulations to Robbie Robinson, Sal Salas, and Tony DiCarlo!  I got a big smile on my face when they showed part of SCV's Les Miserables show and their Scherazade pillows during Sal Salas' section.  I'm digging the fact that the Hall of Famers are toasting the new inductees from their homes.

Today's drum corps memory is about Phantom Regiment, or whom I like to call "Phregiment".  Back in June, which feels simultaneously like 5 years ago and just last week, I wrote that "Harmonic Journey" was one of my top 3 Phregiment shows.  Were you curious about the other 2 shows, or did you already know?

I think that I enjoy Phregiment so much because of their focus on symphonic music for many of their shows.  Their musicality is lush, and I really liked their traditional helmets and plumes, as well as that beautiful color guard.   I think that they're my favorite non-California corps, with a close second going to The Academy.  So I'll share with you in no actual order my favorite Phregiment shows.

1989: New World Symphony

I've never actually watched this show until a couple of weekends ago, when Phregiment was streaming a bunch of shows, but I really like New World Symphony, and if I was Dvorak, I would want Phregiment to play my piece just like that.  I guess those poufy hair things were the fashion at that time, because they look like SCV's CG from their Phantom of the Opera show that year.  This show took 2nd to SCV's Phantom.  Either way, a Phantom was going to win that year.

2011:  Juliet

I love the story of Romeo and Juliet, even with its tragic ending.  This was played from Juliet's perspective, and, SPOILER: she kills herself at the end.   This came 3 years after the Spartacus show, and then there was Turandot.  Their corps director said that they've gotten pretty good at the dying stuff now.  I love the drama, I love the CG uniforms, and I love the music. I also love that they incorporated their signature song, "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" into the show.

2007:  On Air

I like this entire show, but my favorite part was the Flower Duet from Lakme.  Here's a video of the drill design with the duet audio.  I always need to bring you a different perspective, right?

2005: Rhapsody

A boy in the color guard!  What?  Lots of umbrellas.  Gershwin.  I would have been thrilled if this show had won in 2005.

Bro found my trip reports from 2005, so I'm sharing the Phregiment portion with you here.

Allentown 08/06/2005:

PHREGIMENT

"Rhapsody"

Repertoire: "American in Paris" and "Rhapsody in Blue" by G Gershwin

They have a LOT of umbrellas.  A LOT.  The sole male color guard member was great with all aspects of his performance.  He danced like Gene Kelly, and at one point, even tap danced!  Yes, on the grass.  OK, he wasn't actually tap dancing, but he did the movements while the drummers tapped the side of their drums, which made the effect of tap dancing.  They had a lot of costume and umbrella changes.  The music is very clean, but they need to straighten out their drill lines at the end of the program.  This is a wonderful show, and got both V's & my votes for favorite show tonight.

Quarterfinals: 08/11/2005
"PHREGIMENT    95.275
Beautiful sound, and clean runs.  Where are all of the other umbrellas?  I swear that there were more of them at the end when we saw them in Allentown.  Ryan said, "Even the pregnant lady stood up!" (to applaud)."

The pregnant lady, by the way, was V, with Brady in vitro.

Semifinals: 08/12/2005
"PHREGIMENT    96.075
In yesterday's report, I forgot to mention the rain sticks. In order to get the audience to participate, Phreg is asking people to stop by their trailer to buy a rainstick, so that we can make it sound like rain before the show starts, since they have those umbrellas.  We went to the trailer, but they were actual rainsticks, which were $26.00 each.  The guy in front of us yesterday told some BS to the people next to him, saying that Phreg strategically placed people in the stands to play the rainsticks.  I wonder how much other stuff he makes up because he doesn't actually know the truth?  Anyway, $26 was too expensive, so we didn't buy rainsticks.  I said that if they were, like, a $1.00 or so, we would all have them.  Ryan said that he'd even settle for a Pixie Stick at this point.
Oh...umbrella formations!  I missed the second one, because it went too fast.  Great contras, great keyboards, great everything.  LOVE this show."

Finals: 08/13/2005
"PHANTOM REGIMENT
Fantastic music!  Oh, and nice diagonals. :)  Girl, do NOT drop your flag!  It's FINALS!!!"

2003: Harmonic Journey

I wrote a whole blog post about this one.

2008: Spartacus

This was my vote for favorite drum corps show that's not SCV.  The Khachaturian ballad was exquisite, the battle was awesome, and the slaying of the drum major at the end was iconic.  They all stayed in character from before they got onto the field until the very end.  I loved the mood that they set at the beginning, such a perfect way to start the show.  Not only was there drama on the field due to the storyline, but the competition itself had its own drama.  Phregiment was in 3rd place on Quarterfinals night, 2nd place on Semifinals night, and 1st place on Finals night by 0.025.  It was like they were killing the competition one corps at a time.  The crowd was absolutely electric that night, and they got the participation they wanted for the General Effect boost when people started standing up in the stands and yelling out "I! AM! SPARTACUS!!!!"  I was one of them.  What an awesome show.  It was fun to see some of the folks talk about it on Zoom during that Phregiment stream that I watched.

Blog post from my first viewing, at the Rose Bowl:

"I. AM. SPARTACUS!" (Or, as I heard it the first two times: "Hey! You! Whatcha Got?!" Yes, that's what I actually thought I heard. Perhaps the corps should enunciate the first two times a little bit more). "

Blog post from Quarterfinals:

"Very, very, very cool. Violent, but cool. I'm Spartacus, too!"

Blog post from Semifinals:

"The violence never stops."

Blog post from Finals:

"Most gorgeous solo of the entire day: that mellophone solo during the ballad. Bro wondered if this soloist was part of last year's Lakme duet. Hmmm....it's possible."

"1) And with a score of 98. 1 - 2- 5 (collective gasp), PHANTOM REGIMENT!!!!!!!"

I don't know what their corps yell "SUTA!!!" means, but SUTA, Phregiment!  Keep on bringing that baton.

The Geometrics of 2002

DCI Finals
 Camp Randall Stadium
Madison, WI
August 10, 2002

It's Throwback Thursday!  Today would have been Quarterfinals Day of DCI Finals Week, and I went to work today.  I remembered the other day that there was one year that I didn't get to go to Finals because I didn't have enough seniority at the time at work.  I was on the waiting list, and one of the guys that was approved never actually went on his vacation, but cancelled too late so that I could arrange travel and buy tickets to the event.  I was livid, especially because that was the 35th anniversary of SCV and they had a special performance, at Drum Corps Mecca: Madison.  So ever since that time, I have never wanted to talk about that year, and never wanted to see any of the videos.   I did see some of the early season performances, but don't remember much about them because I wasn't blogging yet, and I really didn't want to be reminded of missing such a fun event.

But this year is like no other, and I decided to finally break down and watch Bro's DVDs.  I thought this night would be fitting not just because it's TBT, but also because Quarterfinals is the time when I get to see shows I haven't seen live yet, and most of the corps' shows on these DVDs are foreign to me.  So yes, I'm watching these in reverse order, with lowest Finals score first, and so forth.  This should be fun for me...I hope it is for you, too.

Let's go back in time 18 years.  Get your flux capacitors fluxing, and your TARDIS tardising.  It's 2002!

I am typing as I watch, and viewing the Multi Camera setting, with audio setting at Dolby Digital 5.1.

SEATTLE CASCADES
Repertoire: "City Riffs" -- On the Town; Simple Song from "Mass"; Prelude, Fugue and Riffs; Make Our Garden Grow from "Candide",  all by L. Bernstein

Ooh, I like the guard uniform tops, like suits.  A couple of rifle drops early in the show.  I like the change fro mthe bright yellow flags to the yellow ombre to green ones.  Nice marimba runs during the duet.  The purple and blue flags are very pretty.  Ooh, nice stockings!  Are they actually stockings?  Cute head bobbing by the bass drummers during the contra feature.  Do that tumble, girl!  I don't know how anyone can do the splits, much less after a tumbling pass, but that's because I never had those talents.  I like how the female guard tops are business in the front, party in the back.  Oh, wait.  They're not all like that.  Never mind.  I like that one guard uniform, then.  Their shoes are cute, too, because they are t-straps!  Clearly, I'm just shopping for my own guard uniform at this point.

MAGIC OF ORLANDO
Repertoire: "Desert Winds" -- The Wind and the Lion by J. Goldsmith

Looks like the drum judge on the field asked if oneof the tenor players was OK as they had put down their drums for a bit while the others continued.  He joined later on.  One of the CG guys kinda looks like my friend Ed from UCI choir, but he would have been too old to participate in that year.  I do not like those peach/brown/mustard color flags.  Eeww.  Are they supposed to be lion color?  Is the movie about an actual lion?  I've never seen it.  Go, bass drums!

SPIRIT from Jacksonville State University
Repertoire: "Darkness Into Light" -- Easter Symphony, Mvt. III, "Symphonia Resurrection" by D. Holsinger

Aw, she's already crying, and Brandt is still announcing the corps!  That's a big delta on their uniforms.  The CG is wearing masks. They are not covering their nose and mouth, though.  I've become far too focused on people's masks these days.  Oh, it sounds a bit like Bond!  Nice cross formation.  Yay, cymbals!  They did a headchopper move.  Yay!  The drums formed a delta.  I like those red flags with the hint of Spirit blue in them.  Now that other girl is crying!

CROSSMEN
Repertoire: "The Signature Series" -- Heat of the Day by L. Mays & P. Metheny, Candle in the Window by J. Murphy & F. Wildhorn, and Strawberry Soup by D. Ellis

I miss Bones.  Nice red all over, CG!  Oh, the corps comes on to the field after the pit begins playing.  Neato.  I like that brass opening!  Run, drum judge, run!!!  There's their signature marquis cross!  Oh, I understand the title now.  I like the blue flags with the gold stripe across the middle.  Trio of screaming sopranos = triple the fun!  I like how the pit player in front of them was all smiles.

GLASSMEN
Repertoire: "Odyssey" -- Introduction & Dance arr. by B. McConnell, C. McNutt, & J. Meyer;  Millennium Symphony, Mvt. 1 by M. Kamen; Scherzo from "Millennium Symphony" by M. Kamen; Javelin by M. Torke

The drum major winked as he took off his hat/shako.  I like those CG uniforms with the halter-ish bra top and accents on the pants, with the boot showing.  If I could pull that off, I would totally wear it.  Those are big drums they're carrying around!  That soloist looks familiar, like he's the one that was the focus of two of the last shows they ever played, but then he would have had to be, like 16 or something if he was still around in 2008 or whenever that was.  He played very well.  I've decided that if I had any sewing talent, I would design a line entitled "Drum Corps Chic by Sher".  These are the kind of things I contemplate during drum corps, so we're right on point right now.

BLUECOATS
Repertoire: "Urban Dances" -- Paradise Utopia from "Concerto for Bass Trombone"  by C. Brubeck; New World Overture from "Dancer in the Dark" by G. Bjoerk, S. Sigurjon, and T. Lars

I miss those helmets with the long puffy plumes.   I like how fast they move while in block formation.  Ooh, inset of soprano soloist!  Nice! I like that rockin' piece!

Taking a short intermission to watch "America / O Canada" by everyone at Finals Retreat, because it's on the same DVD.  Also, I need to put on my headphones so I don't wake up my dad.

PHANTOM REGIMENT
Repertoire: "Heroic Sketches: The Passion of Shostakovich" -- Oppression: Symphony No. 10, Mvt. II; Introspection: Piano Concerto No. 2, Mvt. II; False Hope: Piano Concerto No. 2, Mvt. I; Victory and Celebration: Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad", Mvt. IV, all by D. Shostakovich

I love when Phregiment plays Shostakovich.  They are the Shostakovich Corps for me.  I also dig the uniroms with the tan top and white pants, and that sash is snazzy on the drum major.  Those CG uniforms are very Russian-looking.  Love it.  I'm going to call that drum color "butterscotch".  Nice solo leading into the ballad with the iridescent flags.  Pretty.  They're acting like it's OK that their friends tried to behead them with the sickle props.  Final kneel with kick out!

BOSTON CRUSADERS
Repertoire: "You Are My Star" -- Appalachian Spring by A. Copland; You Are My Star by R. Seeley; The Music of Artie Shaw by A. Shaw

If they don't form at least 5 stars, I'm done with this show.  Why do they think I need to read throughout this show?  I guess this was before narration.  I do prefer this over the talky-talk.  Choir corps!  I like the iridescent flags with the stars on them.  That doesn't count as a formation, though.  Fun jazz dancing.  Conquest!  I was thinking, "That one guy in the pit is about to lose it," and then the next shot is of him crying.  Awwww.  They formed the American flag with their bodies laying on the ground!  I'm done with this show, though.

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD
Repertoire: "Sound, Shape and Color" -- Trivandrum by G. Henderson; Symphony No. 2 "Romantic"  by H. Hanson; Symphony for Organ and Orchestra by A. Copland

The Aussies!  I like that opening hit with the bright orange and silver flags.  Aw, greeen-feathered soloist.  I wonder if this year's age-outs still get green feathers.  Triangles!  Yes, I will likely name all of the shapes that I see.  Even the tip of the flag is a little orange triangle.  Circles!  I have always loved when the corps gets into little groups of 3 and 4.  Those are big double flags, and I like the purple with the little bit of an orange ellipse.  It's square time, though.  Those reflective square props are interesting the way they can collapse and stuff.  Diamonds!  Uh oh, now all the shapes are on the field, and we get to see the Viper!  Oh, the detail on the CG uniform has each of the shapes on it.  I like that.  VAAAANNNNGUAAAARRRRDDD!!!  Oh, look how the CG poses at the end by making shapes with their arms!  No, they did not spell "Y.M.C.A."

Here's my one picture from tonight:

THE CADETS
Repertoire: "An American Revival" -- Times Square from "On The Town"  by L. Bernstein, B. Comden, A. Green, & R. Edens; Dreams Come True from "Field of Dreams by J. Horner; Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by D. Raye & H. Prince; New York Memories (Fancy Free) / America the Beautiful by L. Bernstein

Was it a big Bernstein anniversary in 2002?  I like the horns blaring like taxis, although that guy in the stands was a bit late calling for one.  Who was singing "New York, New York"?  Was it the audience?  Their props had writing on them that I couldn't read on some.  I like all of the tributes to the USA this year, almost a year after 9/11.  I love all of the fun during "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"!  Nice tribute with the reenactment of the Iwo Jima statue and the 9/11 photo.

Why did they have to show us the sirens?

BLUE DEVILS
Repertoire: "Jazz-Music Made in America" -- Ragtime/Maple Leaf Rag by S. Flaherty/S. Joplin; I Got Rhythm / Fascinating Rhythm by G. and I. Gershwin; The House of the Rising Sun (Traiditional Blues); Channel One Suite by B. Reddie

I'm sorry, but that DM's salute was limp.  Ooh, bowler hats!  I like that soprano solo!  Hi, soloist!  (He waved at the audience.)  What fun to play Joplin on the marimba!  Rockin' the Gershwin, BD!!!  Ooh, that note is high.  Is this when all of the hair dancing started?  Great solo on HOTRS.  All the drummers circling the high hat stand was fun.

THE CAVALIERS
Repertoire: "Frameworks" -- I. Melody; II. Harmony;  III. Rhythm all by R. Saucedo, B. Kuhn,  and E. Johnson

I have heard many good things about this show.  Let's see what happens.  I love that DM salute.  Nice solos bouncing off of each other to open the show.  I like the drill of picking up folks as they move down the field, then get into a really tight block before opening up again.  Yeah, snares!  I heard that shave and a haircut bit from the basses!  "One and four and..."  starts the CG dancing with the frame of corps dancing around them, and I love it.  You know how I get irritated when people are supposed to be in a straight line, and they're not?  I can't get irritated at the Cavaliers today.  Whoo!  That was fun.

The Cavaliers won all captions that night, capping off their undefeated season and winning their 3rd gold medal in a row.  Congratulations, guys!!!

I looked for Bro, V, and Chun in the stands, but I didn't see them.  I'm now listening to the audio of the show designer of Cavaliers.  I miss hearing the audio of the designers and judges in later DVD releases.

Well, now 2002 exists in my brain in DCI.  That year got a lot better for me, as that was my Pretty Woman year.  I'm hoping that 2020 gets better, too.

Missing Indy with D'Saints

Today is Wednesday.  Not just any Wednesday, but now in times of COVID19 quarantine, it is I'm-supposed-to-be-in-Indianapolis-but-they-canceled-DCI-this-year Wednesday.

So instead of traveling on a plane today, I went to work.  Instead of checking into a beautiful hotel room today, I'm at home.  I did manage to see Bro and V today so that I could pick up something that I'll be writing about later this week, though.  I also ordered Thai food for dinner for my dad and me.  I did eat a doughnut this morning (instead of for dessert after dinner).  So I've been trying not to whine about not being in the city that I've been in for the last 12 years at this time of year.  But it's annoying and I'm really irritated at the people who aren't taking this pandemic seriously and are walking around with no masks and attending huge gatherings and spreading the disease.  I mean, I've been annoyed for months, but this week, I'm more annoyed than usual, even though the DCI was season was canceled at the beginning of the pandemic.

You see, DCI needed to make their decision early.  How were they going to rehearse, even outside, with people dancing on the field, lifting each other when we're supposed to be socially distancing?  How were they all going to be sleeping on gym floors while staying 6 feet apart?  It was the best decision they could make, and it was made even before the science showed that the major way of spreading the disease was with respiratory droplets.  There have been several seasons when a majority of a corps is sidelined because of some virus, and with all of those kids coming into contact with other kids across the country, it would have been a nightmare.  I was wary of sitting next to strangers in the stands, too.  Heck, I can't even get into a car with my brother because he's not from the same household as me, much less share a hotel room!

So I totally get it.  But I am still entitled to have feelings of sadness.  I try to deal with it by posting these memories, so let's go back to some old trip reports to remember happy days in Indy, shall we?  This post is not focused so much on the corps, but on us:  Bro, V, and Me.

First, the traditional song I sing whenever we go to Indianapolis:  "Indiana" by Rockapella, video with lyrics, guys not shown.  This one is of the guys singing live in Fishers, Indiana.  Dude, that's fast!

Here are links to the actual trip reports, and a blurb from each report.

Our first year going to Indianapolis, and we got lost.  I still kind of get lost.  I'm glad we don't drive anymore when we're there.

"I sat in the same row as a lady from Indianapolis, so I got some tips on where to eat. We'll see if I actually get to Houlihan's, Shapiro's Deli, or St. Elmo's."

2020 Update:  I have still never eaten at these places.

Lucas Oil Stadium construction was not completed in time, so we drove to Bloomington every day of the competition.

"We went to the Greenwood mall and bought flip-flops for both of us at Dick's Sporting Goods. I know, I know. MORE shoes, Sher? But, but, they were on sale! It's Bro's fault anyway. Take this girl shopping for shoes and you know she's going to look for some for herself. "

2020 Update:  I still wear those flip-flops when I go to Indianapolis.  I call them "My Drum Corps Shoes".  Once, I couldn't find them in my house when I was trying to pack for Indy, and went ballistic until I finally found them where someone else had put them away.

This was the first time that DCI Finals was held at Lucas Oil Stadium, and we've got a lot more years to go.

"We then went to lunch at Tastings -- A Wine Experience.  You can purchase a card for whatever amount of wine you want to get, and then can try as many wines as you'd like with your card, based on the price of the wine.  So you would get 2 oz of whatever.  I had 3 wines, and Bro had 4 in order to use up the card.  Unfortunately, his 4th wine bottle had run out so he didn't get the full 2 oz, and the card wasn't charged the full rate either.  The trouble is that we then had a balance on the card for less than any of the other bottles available.  Oh well.  He had a Filet Mignon Pizza, and I had a prosciutto-wrapped pesto shrimp plate.  Both dishes were very good.  I enjoyed my wines, and plan on purchasing a couple of them when I get home:  a St. Supery Moscato from Napa, and a Villa Maria "Cellar Selection" Sauvignon Blanc.from New Zealand. "

2020 Update:  Tastings is now a traditional place for us to lunch for Finals week.  They do not have the Filet Mignon flatbread anymore, so we order the Goat Cheese & Fig flatbread.  We do order the Filet Mignon Salad, though, as well as the Ahi Tuna.  Bro always brings his Tastings card to Indy.  This is the eating/drinking establishment I miss most this week.

"FIRST INTERMISSION
Bro and I shopped.  I bought a bracelet from Madison, because it has a fleur-de-lis charm, and a Devil's Staircase shirt from SCV.  Bro noticed that Phregiment and Academy had not yet opened their booths.  We bought some food for lunch, and ate at our desk."

2020 Update:  I've been shopping for DCI stuff online, but mostly purchased stuff from SCV.  I will be sitting at a desk for what should be Quarterfinals Day and Semifinals Day, but it will be a desk in my office, and I won't be so excited about having a desk those two days.

"SCV -- 91.85*
Bro (before the show started): They've changed the whole thing.
Sher: It looks the same to me so far.
Bro: They're going to do it all on their hands.
Sher: And play with their feet and buttholes?
Bro:  That would be funny.
Sher:  That would be gross!
Much inappropriate giggling ensued."

2020 Update:  I still giggle a lot when I read this.

"I brought snacks to munch on when we didn't want to deal with concessions.  But I did need water, and since the people working concessions were actually band boosters, they left the cap on the bottle for me. Bro told me to save it for another day.  So I did."

2020 Update:  We still have issues with needing to keep bottle caps in our bag.

This was the year that my netbook died, so I did a live blog during Semifinals.

"We hadn't had any breakfast yet, and Starbucks was way crowded, so we found another coffee place called Bee Coffee. (They are still working on their website).  Their flavors of drinks looked quite delicious and original.  I ordered a HoneyBee Latte, and Bro and V ordered mango smoothies, which were quite yummy.  My latte was fine, although after having a taste of the smoothies, I wanted something fruitier, but oh well.  Next time. "

2020 Update:  We've been back to Bee Coffee a couple of times.  I still haven't had a smoothie.

This was the first year that we stayed at the JW Marriott.

"Since this is such a nice hotel, they don't have stuff to buy or a gift shop or vending machines or ice on each floor.  ICE.  You can call to have it delivered.  I didn't want to have to tip someone for ice, so I did the self-serve thing and took my square ice bucket to the 2nd floor, where they had about 5 ice machines in a row.

Later, I got hungry again and went exploring, finding the walkway to the Courtyard.  At the Courtyard, they had a little bistro and a marketplace for snacks.  So I ordered some wings, bought Gatorade, and made my way back to the room.  But you know I wouldn't be telling this story for nothing.  I think I got onto 3 elevators before I was on the correct one to get to my room.  There are 2 banks of elevators.  I'm supposed to take the low-rise one.  I kept taking a high-rise, which shouldn't be possible to go up to those floors with my key, but on up it went without me even pushing a button.  Oops.  It was just a comedy of errors, and the other guy waiting for his elevator was not as amused as me.  He must be a bundle of joy at parties."

2020 Update:  I don't get confused about the elevators anymore, but I'm still perplexed about having to go downstairs to get ice.

"This morning, after I woke up and took a shower, Bro took a shower, and while he was in there, I needed to go downstairs.  I took the key card, which was in the thing that keeps the lights on.  So Bro was taking a shower in the dark until he got out to get his key.  Sorry, Bro!"

2020 Update:  We were just laughing about this the other day.

" I had tried to get their attention but they were out of earshot.  Then I showed them what I found on the menu.

Sher: 2014 Force of Nature Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, CA

Yup.  A wine with the name of Vanguard's show!  It was perfect.  I couldn't find it with the other wines, and the server said that it is usually available, but they could open a bottle if I wanted a glass.  We all wanted a glass, so after I tasted it and decided that I liked it, we ordered a bottle.  I thought of bringing the bottle home, but Bro saw that we could get it through Bev Mo, so I just took the cork.  The wine was quite good, and paired well with our food.  Happiness!

It's good that I didn't take the bottle, because we didn't have time to walk back to the hotel to put it in our hotel room before walking to the stadium, and our bags were searched."

2020 Update:  This is still my favorite wine that we found at Tastings, and it is also my favorite time we've been there.

"I also bought a Cadets shirt for a friend's daughter, but it took me forever to decide because most of the shirts had the name of this year's show, and I don't like the show.  I don't know if she liked the show, either.  I did end up getting her one with the long intro that irritates me, but I didn't want to get her another black shirt, and I didn't know if she'd be OK with the ones with the crosses.  Why don't they have more generic shirts?  Ugh."

2020 Update:  I still haven't seen my friend, and I still have those shirts for her.

"We came back to the hotel and had drinks at the bar.  My watermelon margarita was kinda SCV colored, which made me happy.  It's nice to be able to speak freely, knowing that everyone around you is an SCV fan.  What would happen if someone walked in wearing another corps' shirt?  Probably immediate quiet and some looks.  I like staying in the same block of hotel rooms as my favorite corps!  We can all be drunk and happy together."

2020 Update:  This wasn't the first time I booked our hotel with SCV, and it wasn't the last.  My plan is to continue booking with them because of this feeling I quoted.

"On Thursday morning, Bro and I got up early, ate a donut each, and walked to Lucas OIl Stadium.  We arrived earlier than the gates were scheduled to open, so we watched the Colt Cadets color guard do their warm-ups.  Thank goodness they didn't search bags, because I had a bunch of snacks to help us last through our 14-hour drum corps day. "

2020 Update:  I miss my drum corps snacks.  I usually get them at the Farmers Market by my office, but they haven't been open since the pandemic.  At least I don't think so.  I'm usually work from home on those days now.

I hope that I will have new memories to write about next year at this time.  I might lose my mind, wanting to eat EVERYTHING and go EVERYWHERE.  It might need to be double the number of days I'm usually there.

To Better Days
