Bell Ringer

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Saturday, September 24, 2016 -- 2:00 p.m.
La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts
La Mirada, CA

I had forgotten that this show was being performed this year in a theater closer to me than the one farther down south, but a friend's post reminded me and I quickly went to Goldstar to see if tickets were available, because the regular priced tickets were expensive.  Success!  I snagged the last ticket!

I had never been to this theatre before today.  It's kind of weirdly situated in a residential neighborhood with an Albertson's and a gym.  The parking was odd, too, like they were expecting a majority of their patrons to arrive in a (very) compact car.

The lobby is really nice, and immediately I thought that it would be perfect for a scatter-type meet and greet if Rockapella performed there.  They had a photo op backdrop with props for this show, which I thought was fun.  I didn't have a picture taken of myself, though.  There is also another lobby upstairs, which includes a piano.  There are only 3 stalls in the restroom for the women upstairs, so that made for a long line at intermission.  There are more downstairs.  They also have a bar where you can order drinks and packaged snacks.  The signs at the theatre doors show that they do not allow food or red wine in the theater, so I'm just going to guess that you can bring in other beverages.

I can't say much for the inside of the theater itself because I was in the balcony and I didn't get to see much of the orchestra level seats.  I didn't like the fact that I had to look around the person that was seated in front of me if I wanted to see certain parts of the stage, so perhaps the levels are too shallow, at least in the balcony.

On with the show!

  • I loved Dino Nicandros' voice!  He sings as Quasimodo, and I especially loved hearing him sing "Out There" and "Heaven's Light".
  • I haven't read the novel, so I didn't know that Quasimodo was deaf, but that makes sense because those bells are LOUD.  I liked that they cast a deaf actor (John McGinty) in the role, although I wasn't sure that the actor was actually deaf until I read an article about him.  And he was Frollo's nephew?  Mind. Blown.  Cool that they used American Sign Language as part of their choreography.
  • I thought that Mark Jacoby was amazing as Frollo, especially during "Hellfire".
  • While I thought that Keith A Bearden did a fine job as Clopin, I missed Clopin's signature high notes.  The chorus women sung those notes instead.
  • Why?  Why does the chorus need to read their music?  Did they just learn that they were going to sing in the show?  Why wasn't it memorized?  Or maybe because they're not actors, and they're in the choir, they were allowed to use their sheet music..but I'm pretty sure they didn't have those kinds of binders and paper in the 15th century.  ;)
  • Ooh, Esmerelda!  She was sexy and I liked Cassie Simone's voice.  Perfect for the woman whom would be the desire of the 3 other leads.
  • I did have issues with some of the music choices, like some of the chords seemed off, but I think it had to do with the arranger mixing some of Menken's music with new stuff that didn't seem to fit chord-wise.
  • I miss the comedy from the Disney animated film, like Phoebus should be funnier.  The gargoyles did provide a little bit of humor, but it wasn't cutesy like in the film.  Because of the darkness of this play, I don't recommend that parents bring young kids to this show, thinking that it's going to be like the Disney film.  Your kids will probably be bored, and the subject matter is for more mature folks.  I mean, even the Disney film, with "Hellfire", isn't really young kid material.
  • Oh, Phoebus!  I was completely thrown off when he didn't have blond hair.  I would have liked to hear him sing more.  "Someday" is an OK song, but it is a bit long, or maybe I was just sleepy.  I would have liked to hear him sing a major solo instead.
  • I think I cried three times, mostly because I love Quasi's songs and they were quite well done, but the story is also not a Happily Ever After deal, so...yeah.  Tears.
Hunchback is showing through October 9, 2016.

Is Eight Enough?

Rockapella in Laguna
Show #8
Sunday, August 28, 2016
Laguna Playhouse
Laguna Beach, CA

Jenn and Cindy met me at my house after I was done with church, and we made our way down to Laguna Beach.  I had snacks ready for them in the car, part leftovers from the goodies for the guys, part my own snacks as I've been traveling back and forth to Laguna.  I'm glad I had them or Jenn would have been hangry and we just can't have that.  I told them stories about the week's Pella encounters and it made the drive time go by quickly.

They needed to pick up their tickets at Will Call, so we went to the theatre first.   Nick was there, and joined us.  We had time to go to the beach so that I could have one last picture there.  Cindy kept trying to jump into my panorama picture.  This is what it looks like when a person is trying to photobomb a panorama.

Jenn was all excited because she was at the beach and found a whole slew of Pokemon that could only be found near water.

One last picture at the beach for the Rockapella onslaught of shows, and we walked back to the theatre.
Thanks to Nick for taking this picture with Jenn's phone

KP and Margo had seats next to me.  Cindy's seat was in the 2nd row, as was Nick's, but there were seats between me and Jenn that were empty.  I thought they were seats for Weff, but they were seated on the other side of the row, which confused me because I thought we had all bought seats next to each other, but whatevs.  I was just happy that we were all there for the last Laguna show.

See the lady next to Cindy, photobombing us?

Sun Brothers

L-O-V-E
Scott was trumpeting right in front of us.
Sher to KP:  I LOVE them.
You know, because KP had no idea before that moment.

Alamo
"Doo dum, doo dum, do dooby doo...."

Rockapella

Rock Around the Clock
Hi, Bryant!  Oh, hi, Scott -- let's do those moves together!

Jailhouse Rock
"Do you no good": Scott wagged his finger at KP and me.

The woman in back of me said to her friend that Scott is wearing a beautiful suit.  She's in the Scott's Shiny Suit Lovers Club!

Scott:  "Scott.  I'm Scott."  Like he couldn't remember if that was correct.

Dancing in the Streets
Scott seemed to approve of JT's thrusting.

Just My Imagination / Imagine
The audience liked that "2...4....20"

Satisfaction / Cupid
Scott's and Bryant's looked like they were amusing each other during "Can't Get No".
Mitch: Let's see how many singers there are out here.
Sher:  Five.  There are five.

Mitch is from Akron.  Margo said, "I'm sorry."  How nice of the California fans to applaud the Cavaliers.  Mitch placed his stool too close to Cal and Cal tried to move it away.

Moon River
People were clapping during "It's the most wonderful moon..."
Hello, JT and the sweat on your chest!

Paper Doll
Scott daintily posed his Spaghetti Legs together on the side of his stool.  I saw JT make Flirty Flirty Eyes and giggled.  He pointed at me because I noticed.  Or he's trying to distract me from the fact that Steve isn't there.  Mitch flirted with his eyebrows while he lassoed.

Blame It On The Boogie
Mitch was crazy with all of his pelvic action.  Scott's earpiece fell out and he had to put it back in, which made him smile.

<Intermission>
Whomever was supposed to be in the seat next to me never showed up, so Jenn moved over, and Cindy and Nick joined us in the front row.  Ah, that's better.  PellaPosse in da house!!!!

Used Ta Be My Girl
They sang to Margo!  She flirted back to them.

Commercials
Scott: We sold our souls to the corporate devils for a quick buck.
Jenn clapped.
Scott:  No, don't clap for that.

Calvin almost fell down while spinning during Almond Joy.

Bryant raised his eyebrows at me while "waking up" with Folger's in his cup.

Scott felt a coffee vibe with Paula, who lives in Laguna Beach, but is from Corona.
Mitch: I love Corona.
Scott:  Not the beer.
Mitch: Oh.

Stand By Me
Sing it!!!

Mitch scared her when he wouldn't let her get off of the stage, and she almost fell over.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
Scott danced like her when she wouldn't dance like him.  Mitch was jealous when Bryant was with her.  Bryant moved his eyebrows up and down when she swayed with him.  So, Bryant AND Mitch have flirty flirty eyebrows.

Macklemore
People like the grandmas.

Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego
Scott was all crazy when we were clapping along to the beat.

Scott was talking about today being their last show there, and someone in the audience shouted, "Where is San Diego?"
The audience giggled while being confused about this question.  The guys were confused, too.

Encore

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World  (off mic)

Bryant pointed to me while I stood up for the ovation.  You're welcome!

Meet and Greet
I took some candid photos of the posse talking to the guys.
Cal and JeffEvs

I don't know WHAT Jenn is saying to Mitch in the background

Cindy told Cal that she heard that he was tortured at Disneyland.  Bryant said that he wasn't tortured, and that he loved it.  Cal again said that he had the best time there.  Yay!

Mitch said that he was sure he would see us again.  OK, but I want to see Steve, too, but I won't be able to see them at the same time, so... sigh.

Sher and Mitch

I told Scott that I would be going through some serious withdrawal the next day.
Scott:  You've got to go cold turkey.  No listening to Rockapella.
Sher:  No a cappella at all, not even other groups.
Scott:  You can't go to Disneyland...and you definitely can't use Fast Pass.

Oh, Scott.  I already broke all 4 of those rules.

I was happy that most of the girls in our posse were there so that we could take this picture with the guys.  We were overdue for a new group picture.

Pella and the Posse

We said our goodbyes and the posse took pictures to say Happy Birthday to George.

We also took some pictures of the huge Rockapella sign.  We thought of how we could take it down and bring it to someone's home, but I'm sure the person that booked them would rather she had it for herself.  Oh, all right.

Thanks to Wendy for taking this picture!

We took our last trolley ride back to our cars and said goodbye to the rest of the Posse.  I was craving Filipino food, so Jenn, Cindy and I went to Pinoy Pinay in West Covina to chow down.  I mostly just wanted halo-halo, but I needed to earn it by eating protein.

Earned it!

What a great few weeks it's been.  From Drum Corps finals to Rockapella to getting a promotion at work, my life has been on a nice upswing.  Thank you, God, Bro, Posse, and Rockapella for giving me quite the August to remember!

Penultimate Pella in Laguna

Rockapella in Laguna
Show #7
Saturday, August 27, 2016 -- 8:00 p.m.
Laguna Playhouse
Laguna Beach, CA

I had seen a boba place a few times as I walked back and forth to the beach during these days in Laguna, and told everybody that I wanted to go there before the Rockapella shows were done.  We picked today to go to Boba Me Baby.  Nick and Dodie hadn't done the boba thing before, and I didn't really want boba so much.  I wanted a slush with some jelly.  They had mango slush and lychee jelly, and I was happy.  Dodie trusted me and got the same.  Nick got some kind of slush with traditional boba.  KP got something green. We were all happy campers, especially KP, because the company's logo has a monkey on it.  Wait.  They had specialty drinks called The Monkey (chocolate and banana) and Almond Joy, and none of us went for those?  I must have been delirious in my craving for slush.

We enjoyed our boba in the courtyard while waiting for the doors of the theater to open.  Dodie and I had seats in the front row, but we were not sitting together.  I asked the person with the seat next to her if she was waiting for someone and she was, so I couldn't sit there.  The lady next to my seat saw that Dodie and I were craning our necks to talk to each other, and asked her companions to move down so that Dodie could sit next to me.  Rockapella fans are the best!

Sun Brothers

L-O-V-E
The woman seated next to me looked for them on stage, and asked, "Where are they?"  I told her that they were behind us.  I got to shake hands with Calvin.

Alamo
Great response from the crowd.  It's going to be a lively evening!

Rockapella

Rock Around the Clock
Hi, Mitch!

Jailhouse Rock
The crowd loves Bryant and his low notes.  Mitch had a hard time setting down his mic stand so that it was straight.

Scott asked if anyone had seen Pella before, and we cheered.
Scott:  All my Pella Posse down front!
Yes, Scott said "Pella Posse".  No, he was not pointing to us but to people we don't know.  KP and I looked at each other from opposite sides of the front row.  It doesn't really matter that he wasn't pointing to us.  He used my phrase!  I wondered if he'd be saying that when the posse would be in the front row again tomorrow.

Dancing in the Streets
I'm letting everyone else sing without getting upset because I'm tired.  Tired of hearing people sing behind me when I want to hear the people on stage.  Plus it's an upbeat song.  But this feeling won't last long.

Just My Imagination / Imagine
After Bryant said about Mitch, "That's the move right there!", Mitch motioned with his head that he'd like the show to keep going.  Bryant: "Oh, sorry."
After the song, someone from the crowd:  "WOW!"

Satisfaction / Cupid
Great crowd reaction as they loved Scott's Jagger moves.  Bryant sang to the lady in the front row whom I had spoken with earlier.  Nice eyebrow motion back at him, Lady!

Moon River
I like the harmonies in this song, but I can't hear them when people in back of me are SINGING OUT LOUD.

Scott is wearing black Nike socks. These are the things I notice when I've seen them for 7 shows in a 2-week period.

Paper Doll
Mitch is so cute and bouncy!

Blame It On The Boogie
Nice thrusts at the end, Mitch!  Cal gave up on the boogie when he saw all of the craziness from the other two tenors.

<Intermission>
I'm still trying to get used to the fact that Nick is allowed to drink wine.

Used Ta Be My Girl
They sang to me!!!!!!!!  Hi, Calvin!  Hi, Bryant!  So nice.  I heart them.  The lady to the left of me asked if I know them.  I didn't know how to answer her.  I just kind of nodded my head yes as I wrote my note that they sang to me!

Commercials
Before Almond Joy (1), Mitch said, "God Bless You" to whomever in the audience sneezed.
Scott:  "Oh, that was nice!"
I didn't realize it was Scott who does the *pop* at the end of Folgers.

Scott felt a connection with Ellen from San Clemente, whom is a college consultant.

Stand By Me
Ellen sang.  YAY!

Ain't Too Proud To Beg
Yay! Dance, Ellen, dance!

Macklemore
Mitch and Calvin were laughing at something, but I don't know what.  This is what reminds us of the old days of Kevin and Elliott -- that goofball craziness.

Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego
Nice and loud "DO IT ROCKAPELLA!!!" on the first try.

Encore

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World
I give up on these f**king people singing during the f**king quietest song of the evening.  AUGH!

Meet and Greet

I guess I didn't take any pictures at this meet and greet, sorry.

I told Mitch that I was starting to get sad because this was almost the last time I'd see him on stage with Rockapella.  I told him that Steve knows how much I love him, but it's been really fun watching Mitch on stage because of his energy.  I asked if I could have both of them on stage, and Mitch said, "I'm all for it, but you'll have to talk to Scott!"

Jeff asked if I enjoyed Wahoo's, and I said yes.  He said that he thinks Calvin wants to go tomorrow, and they might be able to get Scott to go because they have fish there.

I forgot to tell Scott how happy I was that he used the phrase "Pella Posse" during the show.  I also forgot to mention in the post regarding the matinee show that he signed my photo "To Fast Pass Sherry".

I thanked Calvin for singing to me and he gave me a big hug.  He gives such great hugs!

I also thanked Bryant for singing to me.  He hugged me and as I was leaving, I told the posse, "Bryant's sweat is on my forehead and I don't mind it AT ALL."  They laughed, knowing they'd feel the same way.

We took the trolley back to our cars and said good night.  This was such an awesome day, perfect for this awesome week.

PEZ Me

Rockapella in Laguna
Show #6
Saturday, August 27, 2016 -- 2:00 p.m.
Laguna Playhouse
Laguna Beach, CA

Yay!  A Two Rockapella Shows Day!  When I arrived at Lot 17, I couldn't see the gals that were taking money for the parking, because they were on my right side, in the shade.  I texted the Posse to let them know I had arrived, and Weff was just pulling into the lot, so I waited for them and we took the trolley to the Playhouse.  Wendy talked about being chosen to join the guys on stage the other night.  I'm glad that JeffEvs was there, but I was bummed that the rest of the Posse wasn't there to witness it.  Welcome to the Club, Wendy!!!!!  We were happy that when the driver announced what was at our stop, she said, "The Laguna Playhouse, for Rockapella".  "WHOO HOOOOO!!!" we cheered, and promptly exited the trolley.  We had a little bit of time before the show, so we found Nick in the courtyard, and they all agreed to take a walk to the beach with me.  Have I told you how much I love the beach?

I love it THIS much!

It was a bit warm, but we also had some time to freshen up before the show started.  So we kind of had a healthy glow about us as we sat down in our seats, A107-110.  KP was also in the front row, but in a different section.  We did get all of us in this picture, though.

Posse Selfie

Sun Brothers

L-O-V-E
Sounding good, Calvin!  Mitch sang to a cute little girl in the front row.  As they walked up the steps to the stage, Wendy put a Tweety PEZ dispenser on my lap.  I giggled.  I could not stop giggling.  I'm sure that the guys thought I was just really happy to see them, which I was, but this was just hilarious, and long in the making.  For those of you that are "Seinfeld" fans, remember the episode "The PEZ Dispenser"?  That's what happened to me, except that I didn't laugh so loudly and so much that I needed to leave the theater.  Yes, Wendy has been wanting to do this to me for at least FIVE YEARS.  The best part about it is that it's not actually a Tweety bird, but a Pluto, with a picture of Tweety's head taped to it.  Have I told you how much I love my Wendy Girl?

The Tweety

The Prankster

Alamo
What a cheery song about a couple of people that died in a train collision.  I was still giggling about Tweety Bird.  So was Wendy.

Rockapella

By this time, I may have stopped giggling.

Rock Around the Clock
Scott's shiny suit is even shinier under the violet-colored lilghts.

Jailhouse Rock
Love that train whistle.  Thank you for dancing at me, Scott!  That makes me so happy!

Scott: I recognize a lot of friends down there (points to the front row).
That's us!

Dancing in the Streets
Nice glissando from Mitch on "Eeeeeeverywhere around the world..."

Just My Imagination / Imagine
Bryant stared at Scott while singing the intro, probably admiring his shiny suit, like the rest of us.  Scott's solo was more awesome than usual, if that's even possible.

Satisfaction / Cupid
Bryant did this finger wagging thing at some lady.  As Scott demonstrated how he tries to get girls to become satisfied, he did his dance moves in front of us while quietly saying, "Work it, work it, work it!" which had us practically falling over in laughter.  Scott was ON today.  Wendy asked what the heck I put in their goody bags yesterday.  Just sugar.  Sugar and love.  Are you getting diabetes from how sickly sweet this all is right now?

Scott, as he moved his furniture:  Someone has soiled my custom stool.
Mitch wiped it off for him.  I wonder if those stools were acquired just for the guys?  I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case because the woman that booked them is a huge Rockapella fan.  She is not Cynthia Medina, but that is what we call her.

Moon River
Lady in front row after the song:  Gorgeous!

Scott called Bryant "Mitch".  Oops.  He corrected himself quickly, though.

Paper Doll
I kept staring at Scott's leg bopping on the stool.  He let out a guttural "UH!", too.  He was really having fun during this show.

Blame It On The Boogie
Scott, do NOT fall down!  Geez, he makes me nervous sometimes.

<Intermission>
Wendy, Karla and I were outside when we were signaled that the intermission was ending.  The signal was not like your normal intermission ding dong sounds, but a deeper, clunkier sound.
Wendy:  Needs more cowbell.

Used Ta Be My Girl
Calvin and Bryant sang to the same little girl that Mitch did at the beginning of the show.  She was busy drinking her water, but still paid attention to the guys serenading her.  Mitch also let out a guttural "UH!"  That was loud.

Commercials
During Almond Joy I, Scott's smile at Mitch had them all grinning widely.  During the first NBC peacock flourish, the peacock just kept on flying around.
Scott: That was the moment, the nadir, the pit.  And they loved it.

Scott:  Somebody sent me a message, to my noggin...
He chose the lady next to me.  He asked her if would go on stage with her.  She said no.  I told her to go.  She asked Scott, "What do I do?"
Scott:  Come with me and stop asking questions.
She had her purse on her lap, which she placed on the steps.  I tried to get the purse out of their way, and Scott handed it to me, so that I could put it on her chair.  The lady's name was Carol.
Scott:  What do you do in San Diego?
Carol: Nothing.
Scott:  You just sit around and see Rockapella.
Carol:  Yes.

When Scott said that his vibe was her saying, "I, Carol, want to go on stage because I sing fantastically."
Carol:  OH, NO!

Stand By Me
Scott tried to give her the mic but she kept pushing it away.  He still turned it toward her, though.  Bryant tried to pass his mic over, too.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
I was concerned that she would fall off the stool with all of the craziness.  Bryant made her rest his head on his manly chest.  Mitch backed up his butt all the way across the stage, and Scott guarded her against him.  Hilarious.

Macklemore
Go, Mitch, GO!!!

Where In The World Is Carmen SanDiego

Scott said that they would be at Pepperdine in December.  Whoo HOOO!  He then thanked the sound man for working "under extraordinary circumstances".

Encore

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World (off mic)

The guys left Scott alone on stage, and he shrugged at us.  I thought that maybe they would do the extra song that Wendy said they did the other night, but no such luck.

Meet and Greet

Wendy had printed the picture of all of the guys in this line up and gave all of us copies to have signed.  Thank you, Wendy!  They proceeded to pose for me in their own cute ways.

Thanks, Spidey!

Thank you, Demi-God!

Thank you, sweet Cal!

He realizes I'm publishing this, right?

Thank you, Bass Man B!

KP asked Mitch and Bryant to sign her Rockapella shirt, and lots of people came over to the table to look at it.  JT almost signed it again, because he had signed it so long ago that he forgot.  He schooled Mitch on the names of former Rockapella members that Mitch didn't recognize.

JT asked what we were all doing between shows, and invited us to go to Wahoo's Tacos, his favorite place to eat around Laguna Beach.  Wendy and I walked ahead because he said it was kind of far, and our legs aren't as long as his.  They still got there before us because they took a short cut.  That was not helpful, and neither was I when I looked at my phone and couldn't figure out if we were going the right way.  Sher, the ocean.  Figure it out from where the ocean is positioned on your phone!

They had already received their food before we arrived, and I had to wait for the kids in front of me to finish their order, which took a long time because they were consulting someone on the phone.  Then the ice in the soda machine wasn't working.  So I decided to forget about getting anything from there and ordered an Angry Orchard to accompany my Paleo Bowl.

I sat in the corner next to JT and across from KP.  The server brought the food and called it a "pah-LAY-oh" bowl.  JT snickered and said that they say it all fancy because we're in California.  I said that no, he just doesn't know how to say it properly.  The word is pronounced "PAY-lee-oh".  Also, the guy didn't bring my drink.  Did I mention that we had just come from a long walk and I was hella thirsty?  Yeah, that made me unhappy.  Someone else came and asked if we had everything.  I mentioned my drink.  She looked at my number and said OK.  It didn't come.  Not really talking to anyone in particular, I bemoaned that I still had not received my drink.  So BV got up, went to the kitchen/cashier area, and said to the folks in his very bass voice, "We're gonna need that Angry Orchard."  They got it for him right away, and he brought it over to me himself.  Thank you, Bass Man!

I asked about the sound man's "extraordinary circumstances" and JT said that he had been really sick but still came in to work for the shows.  Thank you, Sound Man!

The food was quite tasty, and the cider hit the spot.  We might have stayed longer had the guys not had another show to do.  CJ & BV went ahead of us because CJ needed tweezers to deal with a splinter.  We rode the trolley back with JT and I somehow refrained from taking a paparazzi picture of him sitting next to KP.

By the time we arrived, Dodie was there.  Hi, Dodie!  CJ and BV had caught up to us (or we caught up to them), we said our goodbyes to WhoEvs, said our see-you-laters to the guys, and set off for the next adventure of the day.
