Stand By Me and Hold My Hand

 Rockapella in Santa Cruz
Monday, July 21, 2025
Santa Cruz Shakespeare
Santa Cruz, CA

After our respite at Starbucks, we made our way up the hill to the grounds of DeLaveaga Park, where the Shakespeare stage is located.  There weren't a lot of signs, so I turned into the wrong lot at first.  Once we found the area we should be, I waited a few beats before driving in because it seemed that they weren't ready to take people in yet.  I had read on the website that they are supposed to direct us how to park because they assign spaces according to the size of the car, so I didn't want to just park in the lot myself.  Also, there were no lines because it wasn't paved.    But then I really didn't have another place to park, so we went inside and I drove around a couple of trees before we spotted people coming out of the box office, and KP asked about parking.  I contemplated just telling them we were with the band; all they had to do was look at my license plate.  But I refrained.  They were ready a couple of minutes later, and had me park in the corner of the lot.  The view was really pretty from the parking lot.

Don't you wish your local parking lot had this view?

As we were getting everything situated for the show and the ride home, we could hear familiar sounds.  Ooh, sound check!  We walked toward the entrance, and could see them by looking between the trees.  So, of course, I took stalker photos, and we hoped that they couldn't hear us talking and laughing because we were so happy to see our guys again.  I realized that my mints weren't in my purse, and went back to the car for them before joining KP in our sound check watching.

That unmistakable blond hair

John!  Armand!

Hi, JT's...um...shorts!

Sound check through the trees
K is Ginger on the hill
darn, another song

Then I heard a familiar voice say, "Is that Sherry?"  It was my friend June!  June was my best co-worker friend when we both first started at our jobs.  She is now retired, and I'm still with the same employer but at a different location.  I've missed her!  She knew it was me because my car was the only other one in the lot when they arrived.  We all decided to go into the venue, but they weren't quite ready setting up the food booth, so we stood around and listened to more sound check.  Oh, darn.  More songs.  :)

Sher and June

I was about to take photos of them during sound check, but then saw a sign that said "No Photos or Videos", which I read out loud and the guy running the place said that the stage was proprietary and would be used for the next 3 plays.  Oh, bummer.  The backdrop of the trees is just so lovely that it deserves publicity, but I get it.  JT saw KP and said that he could see a "Ginger on the Hill".

When their food booth opened, I got a Caesar Salad, which ended up being very garlicky, so I'n really glad that I had gone back for my mints.  I caught up with June and Dene while KP talked to the stage manager.

VIPs were allowed to sit down an hour before the show, but we only had to wait 15 more minutes to get to our seats.  It wasn't really a big deal anyway, because we had assigned seating.  I could have brought my salad to my seat to eat it there, but it was more comfortable to eat at the table and chat before using the facilities and going to my seat.  I had a DESK!  It was perfect for me to take my notes!  I was very excited about that and I'm surprised I didn't take a picture of the desk itself.  I was in seat A10, front row center, with KP in A9, and June and Dene in row B.

Then it was time for Armand to start the show: "1,2,3,4, tell me that you love me more..."

Rock Around the Clock
Uh oh.  JKB had a mis-step.  Pretty sure he choreographed most of the dances for these songs.  That's OK, JKB.  Scott sometimes forgets his own lyrics.

CSL4:  "To sing, or not to sing?"  "I think 'sing'."

Jailhouse Rock
They don't have any mic stands to lug around laboriously.  KP said it's in the rider, but I'm thinking this venue just doesn't have mic stands because they do plays?  The venue director told me before the show that Rockapella is the inaugural act of a series they're doing on Mondays while the plays are dark.  They have such a beautiful performing space, why not?  He said that he had become friendly with one of the band members, and I guessed to myself that it was JT.  (I was right, BTW).  Anyway, that would explain the lack of mic stands.  Perhaps someone could donate some.

JT and Armand used the cool set as jail bars, which made me laugh.  Armand also mimicked CSL4 from behind the ladder by lip synching his high note.

CSL4:  "Who here has seen Rockapella before?"  Big whoo from the 4 of us.
Then he called out my name.  "I see Sherry over there.  Sherry, how many times have you seen our show?"
S:  (blanking out because I haven't updated my spreadsheet in a while) -- "Um, over 100?"
Big oohs from the office, except KP, who remembers exactly how many she's been to, and how many days it's been since she's last seen them.
CSL4:  "It's gotta be more than that.  We've been coming out here for a lot of years."
S:  <blushes, shrugging and speechless>
CSL4:  "We love seeing Sherry at our shows when we're west of ... Nevada.  Thank you, Sherry, for coming to see us again."  (or something like that.  I was still busy blushing and freaking out that he called my name from the stage).  I mean, I wasn't going to shout out to everyone at that moment how much I loved them, because this isn't my show.  I will blush and beam in silence, and giggle a bit with KP.

They see us and smile
seen rockapella before?
Jeff's hair is purple

CSL4 introduced the guys, and said that he was Puck, after looking at them for validation that he picked the right play.

Dancin' in the Streets
Go, John!!!  He sounded great, and reminded me when Kevin used to come out to the audience during this song and start dancing with people.  Good times.

Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown
I love those doggie sounds!

CSL4 marveled at the beauty of the venue: Each place they go to "is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're gonna get."

Satisfaction
Armand is so funny telling CSL4 not to dance like that, and showing him how he should.

Cupid
JKB talked to Rider and Celeste, because Celeste pointed to Rider, and JKB wouldn't let her get away with it.  Ooh, Armand, that high note!  He made a heart shape with his hands.  Hey, I don't think I heard JT's bow and arrow sound effect.

CSL4 talked about JKB subbing for Manny tonight, and how grateful Rockapella is that JKB knows everyone's part. "I think he can probably do Shakespeare as well."

On a not-so-smooth segue, CSL4 then talked about singing at the Andy Williams theater, and asked if anyone had been to Branson.  There were maybe 2 people who had been there. "I don't know why anyone wouldn't leave Santa Cruz to go to Branson".  Much laughter.

Moon River

CSL4:  JT has been with the group for 30 years.  "He started as a toddler.  He was a novelty act.  We used to dress him up."  I mean, I guess they did used to dress him up on Carmen, right?  But then the other guys dressed up, too.

When Cal introduced CSL4, he tossed his lovely blond locks and yelled, "FORSOOTH!!"

CSL4:  "The long-time fans like to hear their old songs sometimes, so here's one most of you don't know, but they will."

I Am Your Man
My goodness, I love this song, and Scott just rocks it, while Cal is just buttery goodness.  That baritone part sounds so good on him.  (Elliott, I still miss hearing you sing, though.)

Rock the Boat
CSL4 gave us a funky beat to repeat after him, and the audience delivered!
"Wow, you're the first audience to actually do it.  SANTA CRUZ IN DA HOUSE!!!"
OK, I love how he says "Santa Cruz" with the Spanish accent and the rolling 'r'.

I haven't heard this one in awhile, and pictured all of us on the cruise while I listened, so much that I almost forgot to say "Do the hustle!" when it came time for us to join in again.  KP had the "Do it!", so it was cool to have the two of us singing different parts.

CSL4's dance is called "The Santa Cruz - in".  See what he did there?
Armand sang the James Bond iconic tune during his solo, and made a gun shape with his hand.

<Intermission>
Eventually, Stage Manager Ruby walked around the theater, ringing a hand bell, telling folks that there were 5 minutes left for intermission.  I looked at the stage, and saw CSL4's hand with his microphone, getting ready to take the stage.

The purple gels of the stage lights turned JT's hair purple, matching his suit.  It was purty.

L-O-V-E
Armand: "Hey, baby!"

Middle Medley
Armand tried to get the others to join them upstage.  They would not.  Not until it was time for them to all get stuck.

CSL4 about a guy in the audience responding that he was having a good time:  "Well, I hate to bring you down, sir.  You've got your drink, though.  We should all do the same."

Commercials
When CSL4 talked about sacrificing themselves for the corporate buck, somebody yelled out, "YES!!!"
CSL4 put a hand on his hip, and admonished them, saying, "Santa Cruz!"
Cal had a goofy face when toasting CSL4 with their invisible Dr. Pepper.

Then CSL4 said he felt a connection with someone in the audience, and walked toward the front row.  Not the people sitting in front of us on their blankets, but the FRONT ROW.  I figured he wasn't talking to the lady next to me because her leg was in a brace and on the chair next to her.  He stopped in front of me.
CSL4: "And she's writing something.  Hi, Sherry."
I put my notebook behind me as I said hello, lest he ask to read something, which, come to think of it, he can't really see much without his glasses.
CSL4: "Who is your pen pal?"
Sher:  "You."  Last time he made mention of my notes during a show, he asked if I was writing a ticket.  I told him that the ticket was for him singing too fast.  I later gave him a full-page ticket during the meet and greet, checking off boxes.  I wonder if he still has that thing.

We have a connection

You.  You're my pen pal.
Really, I should have said, "The Pella Posse".

Back to Sher being flabbergasted.

CSL4, offering his hand to me:  "Come on over here with me."
Like I'm gonna say no.
But um, to KP, I loudly whispered, "NO!"
KP said, "Yes!" and I flashed back to the moment I became a Pretty Woman on October 17, 2002, when it was Kevin bringing me to the stage, Angela was the one to say "YES!" to my "NO!".

But this time it was the Mighty Blond One holding my hand.  I didn't want to let go.  It was like a dream.

Proof of Scott Leonard holding my hand

Scott is Sherry's man
he asked who is her penpal
She said NO!?! but Yes

CSL4:  "Where are you from, Sherry?"
Sher: <thinking, should I say, 'LA'?  Because they might know Pasadena, but I don't know...>
KP, seeing me go completely blank while I was thinking the above:  "MONROVIA!"
Sher:  "Monrovia.  Near L.A."  (Thanks, KP!)

And where are you from?
Sher forgot Monrovia
K answered for her

Me, not knowing where I'm from
I should have said, "Your dreams".
Yeah, right.  He's in YOUR dreams, ya goofball.

I don't think he even introduced me to the guys, seeing as everyone probably assumes I know all of their names by now.  Or maybe he did.  I was reeling.

CSL4:  "So I heard that you are a terrific singer, and you would like to sing for everyone here."
Sher:  "Um, OK."
The ones that know me cheered me on.  Well, the audience cheered me on, but I could hear them the loudest.  Thanks, guys.  It gave me courage.

They started "Stand By Me".  I had the husky, alto voice, but whoo, it was a low key.
CSL4:  "Is that too low?"
Sher nods.
CSL4:  "Let's start it again".  <blows pitch pipe>

The key was too low
Scott started the song again
she sang stand by me

"When the night has come..."

Stand By Me (featuring Sherry)
Well, my posse, I sang it.  I even stood up at one point for "Darlin, Darlin!", and then remembered it wasn't my show and sat down on the stool to finish the song.  How?  How was the dream of singing with Rockapella happening again?  I was in some kind of shock, thinking that I should do like I did in 2002 and go sing back up instead.  But Scott kept prompting me with lyrics as he does, and we finished the song, me and Rockapella.  For the 3rd time.  I tell you, it does not get old.  Scott asked if I had done that before, and I said yes.

"Stand By Me"

My apologies go to the venue now.  Some folks took photos and video of these moments.  I have their permission to share, and I hope you don't mind that the stage is included.  But I can't keep this video to myself when I wished that all of my two readers (OK, maybe 4) and everyone that new about my love for Rockapella had been there as witnesses.

JKB thanked me after I did my bow, and kept me there for the next song.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
You know it's not a bad day when 5 handsome men serenade you.  It's also not a bad day when they happen to be members of your favorite band.  Triple that feeling knowing that they just might like you a little bit, too.  It was so much fun and I almost did the choreography from my stool as if I was sitting down with the audience, because I can't usually help it.  But I danced when I was supposed to, I took it all in, and two days later, it actually hit me that the whole thing wasn't a dream.  I will cherish this day forever.  Somebody led me back to my seat.  Was it Scott?  I don't know.  The people around me clapped for me and congratulated me, and I told them I was out of breath -- maybe from adrenaline, maybe from dancing, maybe nobody should take my blood pressure right now.  So yes, Rockapella took my breath away.

Thanks for the reminder, KP.  My butt touched CSL4's butt.  I mean, we had clothes on, but still.  We were butt to butt.  Little does he know that earlier on in the show, I quietly yelled, "Scott's PANTS!"

Videos are from two vantage points, one is a tiny bit longer than the other.

Macklemore
I don't know what happened during this song, as you might imagine that I was still a mess and a half.

"DO IT ROCKAPELLA!!!"
CSL4:  (to us) "I knew you knew it." (to the rest) "They knew what it was, but you didn't all know what it was."
JT:  "She's right over there!"
The artistic director (?) was dressed as Carmen San Diego.  KP had talked to her before the show, and she wasn't sure if she should just wear the hat or the whole outfit.  KP told her to wear the whole outfit, and it paid off.

Carmen SanDiego
JT stopped his solo:  "I can't help but do it to Carmen.  There will be autographs after the show."

Encore
CSL4:  "Do you want to hear another song?"
Sher:  "5 more songs!"
He didn't hear me.  Again, not my show.

Uptown Funk
Somebody told us to get up and dance, so we did.  That was fun!

Should we sing one more?
Armand said get on your feet
Hallelujah Whoo!

(off mic) Up On The Roof / Wonderful World
The acoustics of this place are gorgeous with all of the trees surrounding us, and the ocean air.

Afterward, Cal walked to KP to get a hug from her.  So sweet.  He had arrived the night before, which explains why they seemed so rested, unlike other times when they're exhausted from the time difference.  They talked for a little while and she forgot all about the cards we had for them.  Thankfully, I had recovered by then and remembered, so we waited for the other guys to come out while Cal went backstage to change.

I talked to a guy named Brad who said that he was going to try to get Rockapella to join in their annual music festival that occurs in the Spring in Michigan.  I want to go!

I also talked to the person who worked the sound booth.  We knew that Nate wasn't there because Fred had told KP that he was asked to work this show, but declined because he and his wife were about to go on a trip to Hawaii.  CSL4 had said that the guy sang with the Manhattan Transfer.  As I talked to him, he said that he was a co-founder of another band I listen to called M-Pact.  Hey!  I like those guys, too!  I now remember when Trist was named as the replacement bass for MT.  Very cool.  He said that he was nervous about doing the sound up until the start of the show.  Thanks for being there, Trist.  I needed you.  :)

I talked to "Carmen", and she said that she had grown up watching the guys on "Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego" and had a huge crush on "the guy with the braids" and JT.  I asked if it was her idea to have them here, and she said kind of, but it was also her husband's idea (her husband was the guy I talked to earlier about the Monday series of shows).  So when the guys came out to say hello, I teased her every time JT talked to her, like she was one of the Posse.  She was so excited, and I loved it.

I asked Armand how he was feeling, and he said that he felt great.  I reminded him of how tired he was when I saw them in Hawaii, and he said that yeah, he was exhausted then, but today felt good.

I told JKB that I was happy to see him, and wasn't sure what he'd be singing today.  I also told him that my friend Cindy thought for a moment that she would join us when she heard he was coming, but couldn't.  He said that he understands.  I asked him about his lovely family, and his youngest is going to college.  OK, I'm old, because I remember JKB missing a show I attended because he was present at the birth of this very son of whom we were speaking.

CSL4 read the card we gave him as we were standing there, which always makes me blush a bit, but then I was embarrassed because when I was writing it, I had forgotten that JKB would be there and we wouldn't hear any of the new stuff that I wrote I was looking forward to hearing.  Oh, well.  He didn't say anything about that, but he liked the photo on the card, which was of a purple sky over Santa Cruz.  We asked him if he saw it the night before when they arrived, but he hadn't.  I told him that it was something that he would probably write lyrics about if he saw it, it was so gorgeous.  KP reminded him of his "apricot sky" lyric, and he said, "Oh, yeah, that was a good one!"  Also, "Shakespeare, my dear, I taught him how."  He said that I was in good voice tonight.  <blushing!>

JT was talking to a lot of people, but when it came time to talk to us, he said, "FINALLY!" as he hugged KP.  JT said I sounded great.  He told KP that there would be a rotation of people.  So maybe they're doing a Thank You to the Loyal Fans thing now?

I think we were interrupted when Rockapella was asked to take a photo with the crew.

We said goodbye to the guys and then we were going to use the restroom, but it was locked.  "Carmen" said that we could use the one at the box office because she knew we had a long drive ahead of us in our car with the cool license plate.  I said, "You saw my license plate?"
She said that everyone did.  Oh, wow, OK!  Oh, that's right, because we were the first ones to arrive.  Thanks for letting us use the restroom!  I know that KP felt at home in the box office while she was waiting for me.

As we left Santa Cruz and made our way to Highway 101, there it was: the purple sky again!  It looked more pink in KP's phone again, so I asked her to use mine.  Still pink.  But it was purple, I tell ya.

Our drive home was mostly us excitedly shouting things to each other, with KP writing haiku in the dark, her little notebook only illuminated by the headlights of the other cars on the road.  I had no problem staying awake, that's for sure.   We stopped at Lost Hills and thought we might be able to get McDonald's, but it had closed.  Thankfully, the conveneince store was open, and I got some Soru Patch Watermelon for sugary sustenance.  We also still had our snacks, and I actuallly was craving Mary's Gone Crackers more than the Chester's Puffs that I brought.  Another thing happened that was yucky and there will be no haiku about it because ew.  Let's just say that I'm thankful for all-night coin-operated / app operated car washes, one of which was near my house.  I made sure we did that before we got back to my place.

One of the members of KP's newly acquired "Auntourage" picked her up to take her home.  You know somebody isa genuinely good person when they'll do that at 3:30 in the morning for someone they haven't known for at least 10 years.  Thank you for preventing me from driving even more that night!

Thank you, KP, for being my Haiku Co-writer and for being there with me to share yet another Rocka Road Trip Adventure!

After a couple of hours of sleep, I worked from home because I didn't want to be a sleepy danger to anyone on the road.  The following day, though, as I drove to work, my Rockapella playlist was active in my car.  I thought about not just that Monday night, but also of a lot of different moments from so many shows.  I cried with happiness, now probably endangering all the people I saved from my fatigue the day before.

I am truly lucky to have found such a wonderful group of guys to fangirl over.  They have brought so much joy to my life, and I am grateful for every moment of their time they've shared with me: the "Moments of You" on stage, off stage, on my birthday, on the cruise, every smile, every hug....everything.

Thank you, Rockapella, for choosing me this day.   The third time was the charm.  But then again, so were the 1st and 2nd.

Forever your Superfan,

Sherry

Under a Purple Colored Sky

 Rockapella in Santa Cruz
Travel Day and Sightseeing
Sunday and Monday, July 20-21, 2025

When my Facebook Friend Phil sends me a direct message, it's usually a Rockapella video that he's found somewhere which I've never seen.  This time, though, it was a video that had just been posted to Rockapella's website, announcing that they would be in Santa Cruz in a couple of weeks. WHAT?!!?  So I dropped everything I was doing and looked it up to see if it was for real.  Well, there they are on the venue's website!  And tickets were available in the front row!  So I did what I normally do for these announcements:  notify the PellaPosse.  I had lots of people to notify but it was such a last-minute thing on a Monday in the middle of summer, and we would need to drive up because flights would be hella expensive.  I also remembered that I had an engagement to attend the night before, so I would need to leave early on Monday morning, see the show, then turn right around to work the next day because I was already taking a lot of time off in July (see recent posts about drum corps).  As soon as I could get somebody to cover for me at work for concert day, I purchased my ticket front row center:  A 10.  Then I waited for the Posse to figure out if they would be joining me.

Bro thought about coming, but he decided against it, I think because he was already going to travel up north later in the week, and also because he had just come home from Europe.  He was going to keep me company anyway, but when he heard that someone else would be coming,  he felt OK about not going himself.  Aw, he was going to take care of me and keep me awake so that I wouldn't have to do that all by myself and fall asleep at the wheel.  KP said she would go.  Other friends forgot that Rockapella is supposed to be priority and that they had other things to do, but KP and I are always up for an adventure with each other, so she bought her ticket, and we waited for the day to come.  I had tons of stuff to do so I didn't have time to make goodies for the guys, which bummed me out because they were FINALLY coming to California, but I just couldn't risk being too tired to drive.  Then I realized that my plans for Sunday were for lunch, so I asked KP if she would be OK leaving a day early, and she was.  I didn't book a hotel until about a day before, but I got a good deal so it worked out.

So I went to my friend's 65th birthday party, which was very nice, and left a little bit early so I could get home.  I caught a little bit of traffic, so I got home a few minutes after KP arrived.  I waved to her roommate whom had just dropped off KP, and found KP with my dad and WonderPup.  I gave her "something geeky" from my trip to Japan, which was a little booklet with three lines on each page.  It was for writing haiku!  I mean, what better time to give her a haiku book than on a Rockapella Road Trip, right?  So you will be seeing a lot of haiku interspersed throughout these posts!   We were on the road shortly after I found the keys that were in my purse the whole time.

Car keys went missing

KP was a good passenger and kept me awake, not that I needed much motivation for that because ROCKAPELLA.  We stopped for gas in Lost Hills, and got dinner at the Arby's where they had spelled my brother's name in an insane way.  Yay, potato cakes!

The potato cakes

We got back on the road and I saw a sign for Dinosaur Park, but did not see anything resembling a dinosaur nearby, so I decided that they were invisible and not worth our time stopping to not see anything.  Also, it would be dark soon and then it would be even harder to see the invisible dinosaurs.

but no dinosaurs in sight

When we got closer to the coast, I asked KP if she was seeing the same color of sky that I was: purple?  She said yes, it was purple, and we were pretty sure we weren't just sharing the same hallucination of being on a different planet.  Unfortunately, the photos she took make it look like the sky is more of a dark pink, but it was purple.  Like Deep Purple purple.  It was stunning.  It reminded me of my bestie's photos from her trip to Nigeria and the purple sunset.

It was quite dark by the time we got to the Four Points Sheraton in Scotts Valley.  SCOTT!  No, not in the hotel.  After almost getting hit by someone trying to park in front of the registration  walkway, I found their underground parking area and we parked there and registered.  We brought our stuff up to the room and started to relax, but then I realized that I had left my charger cord in my car.  KP wouldn't let me go by myself, so she graciously walked down with me while she was wearing her cute Cookie Monster jammy jams.  Thanks, KP!  I was happy to have a bed to sleep in to rest my back after the long drive.  Never mind that the people on our floor were a bit loud.  It didn't matter, as long as I didn't have to drive home in less than 12 hours.  I texted my friend June to tell her that I was in town to see Rockapella, and she bought tickets for the show!  I love spontaneous friends.

View of our hotel lobby

The next morning, we got ready to go to breakfast.  KP came out of the bathroom and said, "I'm in love."  She really liked that shower!  It was huge.  It had a rain shower head as well as a hand held, and there were buttons that made sense to turn on whichever (or both), and it had a temperature gauge, and I sure didn't blame her for feeling that way.  I think it could have used a shelf, though, so I could put other stuff in there.  Maybe people were having too much sexy time in there to notice that.  Or maybe they were afraid it would get in the way of sexy time.  Perhaps I've written "sexy time" too much for someone who didn't get to do that on this trip.

KP had Starbucks gift cards to use, so I located one up the street, which took me way too long to get there because Waze had me drive around a few blocks for some reason.  We almost went to the Wood Gift Shop because that's so us to just go to random places, but I decided against it.  I wondered if "Scarborough" was the one Simon & Garfunkle sing about, you know, the fair.  Although KP laments that her students haven't figured out that she doesn't actually go to Starbucks, I'm happy because I get to reap the benefits for free breakfast.

what's a wood gift shop?

Afterward, we went to a market that was in the same area, and they had some meat grilling on a big smoke grill thing.  It smelled yummy.

Mmm... Meat!

I love quaint markets in other places!  They always have interesting things that I don't see in my area, like baby watermelons and different ice cream.  I wanted to try this one, but they didn't have any smaller containers.

Do otters enjoy Snickerdoodles?

KP found "Mary's Gone Crackers" and giggled so much about it that she bought a box for our nutritional snacks.  Oh, we had plenty of snacks, just not the healthy kind.  We tried them later and although they weren't the best tasting, they were tasty enough that we started to crave them later.  Darn those nutrients.  We also bought greeting cards for the guys because they were pretty.

We went back to the hotel to relax, write out our cards, and change into the clothes we would be wearing for the concert.  We knew that John would be subbing for someone, but weren't sure who.  I got confirmation that it was Manny, which is good because KP had already written for Cal by that time.  Unfortunately, the hotel didn't allow for us to check out late because of whatever the lady saw in her "departures" list.  Shouldn't you be looking at the "arrivals"?  Or maybe she was looking at both.  I don't know.  The hotel was beautiful, by the way, and had we more time, I probably would have lounged outside while reading a book.  But no, we needed to check out at noon, which is pretty decent for checkout time.

We were thinking of just hanging out at a mall and seeing a movie so as not to get too sweaty before the show, but KP also wanted to see the ocean, so I said we should just go to the Boardwalk and do the touristy thing.  The drive is much prettier in the daytime!  I changed into my flip flops because I wanted to be on the beach for just a few moments.  We were hungry again, so I we shared a meal so that I could have a corn dog and KP could have my fries.  We also got souvenir cups because we're touristy.

We walked to the arcade, and I would have played video games, but the lowest amount you could put on a players card was $20 and I didn't want to pay that much.  So I got a pressed penny of a carousel horse instead.  $0.51 souvenir is good for me!

Cup and Penny

We had seen the funnel cake booth when we arrived, so we shared one of those.

KP the Deliverer of Funnel Gooodness

I contemplated getting a henna tattoo because the cheapest one was only $5, but didn't want to wait to get it.  It was just a really nice day to sit by the beach, so I'm glad that KP mentioned it. At one point, I got sand in my eye, and tried to wink it out of there.  This is what I look like when I wink in my selfies.

Sexy, right?
I may have had a little bit of sugar.

We drove around to get gas so I wouldn't have to find it after the show, and drove to Natural Bridges State Beach, where we didn't see any bridges, but we did see a LOT of birds, including a couple that were having their own brand of sexy time near us.  I do not have photos of that.  Anyway, it was a bit windy there, as you can see from my hair.

Birds On A Rock

We weren't very far from the venue, so we found a nearby Starbucks to rest and use up the remainder of KP's gift cards.  They're so fancy there with their plates and in-house cups!  They also had these at the one near our hotel.  Is it always like this everywhere inside?  I'm so used to getting drive-thru or pickup that I haven't sat inside a Starbucks in quite a while.  As we were sipping our iced tea, we saw that people were beginning to congregate outside.  Oh, yay!  A protest!  It was a relatively small one, but by the time we left, I was heartened to see about 20 people there, including a kid that looked to be the age of a pre-teen at the most.  I love seeing parents teaching their kids good civil rights.  I made sure to thank them for their actions before we left.

Let's go to the show!

I Like The Shimmery Everything

 Corps at the Crest
Saturday, July 12, 2025
Rose Bowl
Pasadena, CA

Dodie and Glenn met at my house so we could carpool to the Rose Bowl.  I followed directions today and drove past our usual parking lot entrance because the guy told us to keep going.  So we still ended up in lot K, but closer to the golf course...but not that much closer than we usually park, which didn't matter because we get there early enough not to have to walk very far anyway.  We got in a long line, and we were told that they were opening up Gate F, so we could go farther to a shorter line, or stay in the long line.  We opted for the former.  Dodie couldn't get through security because she had a Hydro Flask and they only allow empty plastic bottles, or sealed plastic bottles of water.  Glenn pointed out the family in front of me put the mom's not-clear backpack into the dad's clear backpack and thought they would be fine.  The bag did get manually searched, unlike my only-clear bag, which was fine because I told myself not to bring my camera or anything else they would scrutinize.  Don't tell me I don't learn from the past.  So Dodie needed to go check her flask in with the other bags to be checked (not checked for security, but like a coat check where you don't get it back until you leave).  You know what they had for us when we got into the gate?  QR codes for programs.  What a freaking concept.  I, of course, thought it was just an ad for something and promptly put in my bag without looking at it and didn't realize it had the performance order and the QR code for the program.  Glenn showed me later when we sat down, and then I never took my own out of the bag and just consulted him the rest of the night.  I mean, he was looking at it anyway, so thanks, Double N!

So Glenn and I shopped, and I bought a teal Pacific Crest bucket hat that I had seen in their online store.  I contemplated getting the Sweeney Todd shirt for Gold, and the lady at the booth took off her sunglasses to reveal a nasty bruise around her eye, taking up a quarter of her face.  She told us what happened and we wished her well.  Glenn saw that Blue Knights had a new tech polo shirt, but they didn't have his size.  So I asked about it, and they said they had some in the trailer, and they could go get it later.  He said he would come back after the show and they said they'd have it by then.  We found Dodie and I went to the Boston booth to get a whale tank top from their 2023 show.  The guy at the cashier said it was really hot but he was glad to be in California, as they hadn't been here for a really long time.  He wasn't talking about DCI Championships in 2007, but a time before that which I don't remember at all.  Maybe he meant him personally, and not the corps.  We also went to the Academy booth so that Dodie could get her A-CAT-emy shirt, and I got a London Fog Latte shirt and a pretty pen, which I used for today's show notes.

We went to the entrance to our seats, and only the elevators were functioning, so no escalators this time.  We got our wristbands and were also told to go to the opposite side from which we are accustomed to sitting.  Our seats were in Section 104, row B, seats 5-7, on the right 30-yard line.  We got our food, which this time was cheeseburger sliders, mac and cheese, fried dumplings with chicken inside, and veggies standing in ranch dressing in a cute little shot-glass sized cup.   Everything was yummy, much better than last year.

My plate.
I don't know why we have to pay for water.

When I got to the dessert later, they had cookies and brownies.  I stared for a while.  A man came up next to me and said that the brownies looked really complicated.  I agreed, as they kind of looked like cake with a bunch of stuff on top.  So I opted for 2 different kinds of cookies instead.

The Star-Spangled Banner was sung live by soprano vocalist Brianna.  She can still sing that high note!  Thanks for a beautiful rendition again, Brianna!  I listened to it while I was still inside, having just picked up my cookies.

Hi, Ryan Turner!  Good to hear your voice announcing the show!

FREELANCERS
Repertoire:  "The Magic of the Moment" -- Give It One  by M. Ferguson; Believe in You  by A. Marshall; Momento Magico by (not listed in program)

This year's show was a tribute to the 2002 Freelancers mini-corps, so you'd think I'd be able to look up the composer of the last song that way, but no.  They didn't play any of these songs that year.  Or at least I don't think so.  I guess the tribute was that they were playing on G bugles, which was cool.

Nice that they have chairs to sit on.

Then this blue helicopter hovered over the Rose Bowl for several minutes.  I wondered if someone from the BD organization was in it.  They didn't do anything but hover for a while and it was weird because it didn't look like any of our law enforcement choppers.  I mean, you could be less intrusive and just use a drone, buddy.

BLUE DEVILS C
I like seeing them do what the big corps do.  It's kind of difficult to describe, but they do look like mini BD.  Good job on the "As Time Goes By" duet!

Casablanca Fans

GOLDEN EMPIRE
Music was better today.  I like that contra feature, as well as the bass drums.

Love these colors

IMPULSE
Oh!  We're supposed to look up to see dragons!  This is the 3rd time I've watched the show, and I just got that because Dodie told me they were doing music from "How To Train Your Dragon".  I'm a little slow.  So the rockers are the viking ships?  Or are we in the clouds?  They caught the frisbee!  Yay!  The show needs more dragons, though.  Maybe then I would have gotten the theme quicker without reading, you know, a PROGRAM.  I'm not bitter.  Dodie was excited to see the show again, but was disappointed when two guys sat in front of us because she had to kind of contort herself to get unobscured pictures.  Then they left!  So they were there just for that corps, and to annoy her.  UGH.

Looking Up

Yellow Rifles

BLUE DEVILS B
They did a different song for their sound check, and didn't need extra time to fix their electronics.  Six is a lot of cymbals, right?  Toss the rifle really high, catch it, then let it drop to between your legs so that you can catch it with your lower leg.  Fancy.  Dance Break!  Dude behind us said they sounded better today. I agree.

Showing off the Zoom on my camera

GOLD
Oh, there is another side to those big screens with different pictures.  I didn't notice the other couple of times.  The other screens were of a pie shop and an attic room.  They need to clean up their music as it is still muddy.
S:  I like this show.  People die and stuff.

<Intermission>
I ate more mac and chees and veggies.  The offerings at the bar were boring, so I didn't get any kind of cocktail this time.

CASCADES
They still didn't use the colors on their props,  I didn't think it was that windy, but I don't know what it's like at field level.  Their music was much better, and they had very nice solos.  Glenn pointed out that the guy on the cymbal rack on the left side was really getting into it during "Love Song" and his hair was bouncing.  Cute!

ACADEMY
Very nice euphonium (baritone?) / mello duet.  Great percussion feature with front ensemble and battery.  Nice reacton from the crowd when the umbrellas opened up.  At the end of the show, the flags and the uniform change magically turn the fog to a clear sunrise.

Fog is coming in

I love double flags

BLUE KNIGHTS
Hmmm... I don't remember any talking during this show before.  Maybe I heard the drips yesterday?  Their music was a little muddy today, but the oboe solo was really pretty.  Dodie doesn't understand why they would use so much of that color.  I will not tell you what she said it looked like, but the description was not flattering.

Pretty Blue Flags

MANDARINS
G:  I like the shimmery drums.
S:  I like the shimmery everything.
Great music tonight!  Hey!  Did that thing light up before?  I don't remember seeing that (when one of the props is vertical and the soloist pops up).

PACIFIC CREST
Even though I prefer the live announcer, I do like that a woman starts to introduce the corps, and it ends up with a demonic voice saying "PACIFIC CREST".  There's an apple in the tree now.  Oh, they have two cross formations.  Um, but they didn't have crosses in Eden, did they?  Is this a Paradise Lost thing that I don't know about, because I didn't read it?  They're beating up those snakes.  The more I see this show, the more I like it!  Great show, PC!  I like that drill!

Eek!  There's also a snake now.

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD
Wow.  That's a drum corps!  I was on the edge of my seat trying to capture all of the drill formations and the musical riffs.  The horns, the spinning, the drums, the corps-reography, everything!  Wow, that front ensemble -- the marimbas!  I was overwhelmed.  I loved hearing the crowd "ooh" and "aah" and "whoa" at the quiet moments as well as the big ones.

I love the absence of big props

We'll just build our own prop right here

Guys, help me get these things off my arms!

V

Ah, that feels so much better!

BOSTON CRUSADERS
They spelled "BOOM"!  I love those rifles.  OK, let's throw them over the drum line, then!  The twirlers were juggling 3 batons.  I love the dynamic contrasts in the horns.  The guys in front of us were taken aback many times.  At one point a lady in back of us just yelled, "WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!"  We laughed, as there is just so much to see and hear and it's all just crazy good.  The guy hit the huge bass drum with a huge mallet toward the end.
D:  Oh!  It exploded!

Contra Front

Contra Butts

Look up!  Are there dragons?

I just like this formation.

BLUE DEVILS
I know this isn't the same violinist from their "Ghostlight" show, but they sure know how to find them.  Go, Guard!  Glenn said that the drum major was the one playing the soprano sax solo.  I really love their rendition of "Uninvited".

Show Start

Google Photos made this for me.

Encore
Pacific Crest played the Shostakovich piece from their show, as well as their corps song, "Ave Maria".
I don't know why the color guard turned around to face the crowd after the Ave Maria.  Were they trying to tell us to clap?  Or they just wanted to make sure we were seeing their faces and not just their backs?  Because the drummers didn't turn around like that.

Congrats, Boston!!  I'm so glad that they came out to California this year so that my friends could see them.

Since Glenn needed to go back to the Blue Knights booth, I decided to buy the Gold shirt while I waited.  It's the straight razor!  By the time I went to the Blue Knights booth, the guy still needed to get Glenn's shirt.  As we waited for him, I bought some stickers.  The guy was going to give them to me for free as a thank you for waiting, but I told him that I couldn't take money from the corps.  We both said our thank yous in Tagalog and after Glenn finally bought his shirt, we went to the car.  We sat there for a while because traffic was at a stand still.  One driver tried to back out of his space even though the cars had moved maybe one foot, and then got so mad at the other driver for not letting him in that he parked his car, got out of the car, and stormed over to the other car to yell at the driver.  Dude, calm down.  We just saw a cool show and Boston was so good.  You don't need to ruin the evening with your impatience.  I just wanted to get away from that mess, so I was glad that the cars parked behind me had left so I could back up and go to another exit.

So that's it for the So Cal drum corps shows for me this year.  My next posts about drum corps will be from back East.  Until then, I'll probably have "Uninvited" in my head at least once a day.
