MouseAdventure: Goofy Sports Edition

"Where the heck is the butter?!?" -- Sherry, many times, in Toontown

Working on the Polo quest

Congratulations to my team, The Dippy Dawgs, for scoring 330 out of a possible 435 points, making 9th place of 99 Basic teams, including finding and solving the Hidden Quest.
It was a little bit wet that day

We got buttons!

We should have about 7 of these.
Or at least 3.

Ooh....The Chase!

Rockapella posted this article about Where on Google Earth is Carmen SanDiego, and I love it!  They refer to Rockapella.  They say "do it Rockapella"!  They have a video of the guys singing the song.  How can I not love it?!

I decided to play the Google Earth game, and it's so cute with the 8-bit old-school type of play, mixed in with the Google Earth graphics!  Carmen is so cute, too, and what?  I teamed up with her?

Anyway, I might be playing this game every day.  Maybe more than once a day.  Back to learning Geography in fun ways.

I just wish they'd play the song whenever I catch the thief.

Cows, Rhinos, Whatever

Rockapella in Arroyo Grande
Saturday, November 17, 2018
Clark Center for the Performing Arts
Arroyo Grande, CA

Remember when I said this hotel had an electronic device instead of the standard binder for hotel information?  Here is what it said about today's weather:

That's right.  The weather is "Smoke".
Also, it's damn cold out there.

I met up with Weff at hotel breakfast, which included our leftover beignets.  Yum.  We packed up the car, and went to a nearby Walgreen's to pick up the prints I ordered.  We then made our way down to Arroyo Grande.  As promised, I brought games with me for us to play.  The first one was "Cows On My Side".  Whomever says "cow(s) on my side" whenever they see a cow on their side of the road gets a point.  If you see a cow on the other side and say "cow(s) on your side" before the person on the other side of the car, you get a point.  Weff are quite competitive with each other, so this was especially hilarious for me.  At one point, I think one of us (can't remember who) saw a rhino.  It was not a rhino. We also began to imagine cows were there when they were just big rocks that we nowhere near the shape of cows.  Wendy had planned on taking a nap sometime during the ride, but refused to do so when she realized she needed to be alert to spot the cows.  Sorry, Wendy.

We stopped at In-n-Out for lunch.  The only free tables were outside where it was a bit chilly, but we still enjoyed our food....because, hello.  It's In-n-Out!

Not surprised that JT liked my Instagram post from here

When we got back on the road, I introduced our second game (the cow game continued):  Mad Libs.  Yes, they were Rockapella-themed.  The one I did for this leg of the trip was based on a Rockapella song.  I think I'll share the actual MadLibs in another post because they're kind of long, and you know, I'm not behind enough on these posts, I guess.  ;)

We arrived in Arroyo Grande and checked out the location of the venue, figuring that we saw Rockapella's mode of transport in the parking lot since they would have been there for sound check.  On our way to the hotel, Wendy won the game by yelling, "GHOST COW!!!" when she saw a cemetery.  "Ghost Cow" means you get everyone's points!  It was an awesome end to the game because we were almost at our destination.

We saw a little cafe near the hotel and figured we could go there for dinner.  After we checked in and brought our luggage to the rooms, Weff realized that the cafe would close soon, so we drove down to 8575 Caffe Perfetto and I ordered a Mexican Mocha, an asiago panini, and this cute cookie with strawberry jam filling.

I heart cookies!

We ate our sandwiches in the breakfast area of the hotel because the cafe was just about to close when we arrived.  The lady in the cafe said that they needed to go bake for the next day, so we promised we'd be back in the morning, because we wanted to try more stuff.  Then we got ourselves ready for the show.

When we arrived at the theatre, we saw Karla and met her aunt Charlotte, whom illustrated a book about hippos that KP previously gave me, "Hurry Home Hippos".  We also took a look at the Christmas trees up for auction in the lobby before going to our seats in the front row, house left.  Yay!

Posse Selfie

The introduction video played, and I was finally able to take notes of the descriptions for each guy:
  • Mitch = Mr. Energetic
  • Bryant = Rumble Down Under
  • Calvin = Smooth Like Butter
  • Jeff = One With The Drum
  • Scott = Goldilocks
Rock Around the Clock
Scott was wearing my favorite tie!

When the song ended, Mitch was on the edge of the stage right in front of me, and sang "Sherry", and I was happy happy!  I may have squealed a little bit.

Jailhouse Rock
I like the "Choo choo Whooo"s.

Scott, when we cheered because we had seen Rockapella before: "Oh, yeah, I recognize all you faces down there."

Dancing in the Moonlight
...and there goes Cal's mic pack.

Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
Mitch raised his leg like he was going to pee on Calvin like a dog. (I was going to write "doggy style", but that seems wrong somehow.)

Satisfaction
I like the guttural "I try" from Scott.  Bryant comforted him with a hug for not getting any satisfaction.  During the Another Saturday Night portion, Mitch asked Lori if she wanted her 15 seconds of fame.  "No."
Mitch: Don't take my dream away, Lori.

Scott recognized Mitch as "The magnificence that is Mitch Rains."

Moon River
Scott:  Bryant is newly married to a California girl, whom is currently performing at Radio City Music Hall in their Christmas shows.  Hi, Hannah!

Scott talked about records and said to Mitch: That was before your time, son.

Paper Doll

Rock the Boat

<Intermission>
I waved to Fred on my way to the lobby.  Some of the bathroom stall doors have plaques with the names of theatre donors.  Others have little quotes on them.  It was kind of like reading a message from a fortune cookie and ending it with "...in the bathroom."  When I got back to my seat, Wendy was playing a pretend keyboard on JeffEvs' hand, and emoted like Ross of "Friends".  These two never fail to entertain me.

The guys came back to the stage after they had "a little snacky snack", according to Scott.

Dancin' in the Streets
Aw, I haven't seen them perform this song in a long time!

L-O-V-E
This song makes me smile.  Scott attempted to position his body in the shape of an "E"

The Middle
Bryant sang "Baby" to me.  Hello!

Commercials
Scott called us "the discerning Arroyo Grande audience".  After one of the "NBC" jingles, Cal was excited, and said, "Yeah!"  When Scott labeled Rockapella as the "Heroes of Capitalism", Mitch went into Superman pose.

Scott felt a coffee connection with April after not connecting with her friend.  "Is that a 'si'?  This is a bilingual show!"  April is from Atascadero and is retired from "whatever".  She sang Stand By Me with the guys.  Yay!  I like when they actually sing.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
April had a lot of fun with the guys, especially Calvin and Scott.  "You're a really good entertainer.  You should try out for Rockapella."

Macklemore

Bryant:  We are a fun band.  Come along with us.
Bryant talked about seeing Rockapella for the first time when he was 8 years old.
JT:  I was only 10.
Bryant asked JT what he enters on his tax returns as his occupation.
JT: "Sad little clown".  No, "professional spitter".

They did their vocal percussion duet.  OK, I LOVE that it was different from yesterday.

Carmen SanDiego

Encore

Boogie Tonight
Yay!  Fun stuff.

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World
There is too much audience singing around me.  UGH.

(This blog post might be edited in the near future, after I figure why I wrote down "single family dwelling" in my notes.  Like, I can't read half of my notes tonight and I'm leaving stuff out, but I can very clearly read this phrase.  WHAT?)

Meet and Greet

While we were waiting to get in line, one of the usher volunteers talked to us about the differently-themed trees, and told us she really liked the tree sponsored by Menchie's.  APPARENTLY, she really likes Menchie's, and proceeded to tell us what she liked to put on her yogurt.  I don't remember her name, so I'm going to call her Menchie from now on.

We got in line to talk to the guys, and someone was talking to JT for a long time.  He saw us waiting, and apologized.  JT said to him, "That's OK.  They have all the autographs."

I gave the guys a copy of the picture from yesterday as a Happy Thanksgiving card.
Scott:  You guys are so sweet, so nice and thoughtful."

Scott told JeffEvs that he wasn't sure if Cal slept in the back of the car.  He just knew that Cal was quiet.

Calvin felt a lot better today.  I told him that it was noticeable on stage and off.  Wendy asked him why his girl is called "Provolone".  He said they had all decided to use cheese names for their video and he was the only one that actually did it.

Bryant showed his envelope to Mitch and said, "Mine says 'MISTER Bryant Vance'."
Mitch:  What?  Why?
Sher:  Because that's his married name.
Bryant:  You don't even get a last name.
Sher: You need a symbol, like Prince.

The guys were done with the autograph session, and stood up to talk to us.

My friends are wise and take pics of Scott's shoes with my phone
because they know I obsess over them.

Scott asked what I was doing for Thanksgiving, and I told him that I would be making yams and baking pies.  He said that his place is tight and Natalie is living with them even though she doesn't want to and wants her own place.
Sher: Did you tell her that's expensive in New York?
Scott:  Right?  So we're thinking of making reservations for dinner somewhere.
I told him that would be nice, and about the one year that my Dad took us to a winery for Thanksgiving dinner, which was a nice change of pace.

The guys took pictures with us.  Menchie full on got in Weff's picture, and JeffEvs looked at her like, "what the heck are YOU doing here?"  The picture of that moment is classic.  It wasn't on my phone so I can't share it with you, but just know that it was real.

Then when the guys took the picture with me, my friends and the ushers were laughing, and I wondered why.  They said, "You'll see.  You need to make it your profile picture."

...and my profile picture it became.

We were the last ones to leave, as usual.  One of the ushers, Ruben, led us to Chili's.  Actually, I think he tried to lead us, but we needed gas and stopped there, because we figured that he forgot about us and decided to go home because he went up some hilly street.  It turns out that we should have kept following him.  He probably wondered where the heck we went.  Ruben was really nice, and used to live in Southern California.  We thought he might actually join us, but he didn't, probably because he thought we ditched him.

At Chili's, I ordered a mango margarita.  It was humongous.

Bigger than my head, I tell ya.

They were out of baked potato soup, which JeffEvs ordered, so they comped him whatever food he ordered as a substitute.  Well, that was nice!

We got back to the hotel, and I finally learned that I was having trouble opening my door the whole time because the door handle goes up and not down.  I must have tried opening that door at least 10 times during the one day we were there.

The next morning, we had hotel breakfast, then went to Caffe Perfetto for drinks and pastries to go.  I had a hard time deciding on one of the teas because they had such a nice selection and they all smelled yummy, but finally chose the Berry Tea. I also ordered a pecan pie, "because you told me to yesterday", I said to the lady.  I also ordered a bacon cheddar scone so that I could pretend to have some protein.

Grazie, Perfetto!  Ciao!

On the way home, we played another MadLibs, which was based on these blog posts.  We stopped for something to eat in Oxnard, where they had dolphin sculptures with speakers in their heads.  Or maybe they were water spouts.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

We then traveled through the San Fernando Valley, which had also been hit by horrific wildfires.  We were lucky that they had opened up the roads, and saw a lot of burn areas.  It wasn't quite as smoky as it was up north, probably because it was later in the weekend and the wind had blown some of the smoke away.

We stopped at my house to drop off my luggage before heading back to Ontario airport where we had left our cars.  Glenndy was about to deplane when we arrived, so I said my goodbyes to Weff and waited for Glenndy because I brought Cindy some biscotti from Caffe Perfetto.

Well, that was a fun road trip!  I see during the time I wrote this that there was no road trip haiku.  Uh oh. I guess I was too busy at the time, so here you go, better late than never.

Wendy yells "Ghost Cow!"
Menchie really likes yogurt
Jeff T licks my head.

First to the Key, First to the Egg

You know when people say "the book was better than the movie"?  This was the mild anxiety I had when it was announced that Robert Cline's "Ready Player One"  would be a film (ooh, the icon on the official site is a key!) .  I had read the book twice before this was announced: the first time because it looked interesting, and the second time was to prepare for MouseAdventure: Ready Player One.  Then the announcement came that Steven Spielberg would direct the movie.  Well, that made perfect sense.  His movies are referenced throughout the book, and he would have the perfect viewpoint.  I love Spielberg's work.  But still, the anxiety...would the combination of Spielberg and Cline result in a great work of art, or not?  I read the book a third time.

This Rubik's cube appeared in the lobby of the AMC several weeks before the movie opened.  They can be moved horizontally, but they matched up at the time because nobody had messed with them yet.

Sorrento

Halliday

Wade

I saw the first trailer before "Bladerunner 2049", and while the visuals were impressive, I didn't like the way the story wasn't really presented.  Uh oh.  Then the second trailer was released, and I was relieved, and excited for opening day.  I attended the panel at WonderCon and got even more excited!  I decided to go to the Thursday night showing because I was unavailable for Wednesday night.  Cindy and Mox decided to join me and we watched it via the Dolby Experience.  I wore my shirt from MouseAdventure.  So did V, when she saw it with Bro!

I don't know why I have my napkin in the picture.

  • Wow.  Those visuals.  At first, I was a little bit dizzy because it was so jarring, and the screen was huge, but I got used to it after a few minutes.
  • The Stacks were pretty much how I pictured them.  The Oasis...I couldn't imagine that, no way.  It was incredible.  I was so very happy that they were able to get what seemed to be Cline's vision of that virtual world.
  • The quests were not the same as in the book.  During the panel, screenwriter Zak Penn alluded to one of the quests that was not included in order to keep the action going, and I did miss Joust and Pac-Man.  They did throw in a couple of things in the background that alluded to them, though, including one of the IOI employees mentioning Joust. I really would have liked to see that part, though.
  • Whoa, the scene in The Overlook.  Perfect.  I loved that dancing zombies element and now I want to play the game.  Cindy couldn't really watch it because that's her nightmare movie, but it really was well done.
  • I smiled as I saw Parzival strutting like John Travolta, because of Tye Sheridan's story about working with Spielberg.
  • Doritos were on the table at Wade's trailer in the Stacks.
  • That's a big egg, yo.  I don't know how Halliday couldn't find that thing at first when it was all glowy and big.
  • I liked how everyone was portrayed, especially Mark Rylance's Halliday as the awkwardly social genius behind it all.
  • "She wanted to go dancing, so we watched a movie."
  • "If you all want to reach under your seats, there's nothing there."
  • TJ Miller is hilarious as usual as I-R0k.  So menacing, yet he thinks he has carpal tunnel of the neck.
  • Ben Mendelsohn's Sorrento wasn't just a villain, he was a rude villain.  I mean, he never said "please", not with the orb, not with the gun, nothing.  Jerk.  I mean, even his monogrammed tie is obnoxious, and reminds me of a certain POTUS.
  • I do love, though, that Sorrento mentioned the Millennium Falcon.
  • "Ninjas don't hug."
  • That's a lot of thank yous for all of the pop culture references used!  I'm glad that they were all on board with this flick, especially since the director was such an unknown (wink!).
  • I love that one of the power ups is the Zemeckis Cube.
  • I liked that both the young and old versions of Halliday were wearing Space Invaders shirts.
  • So, was Parzival's hair supposed to look like the lead singer from A-ha?
  • My favorite Easter Eggs, at least those which I've seen:  Speed Racer's Mach 5, the Batmobile, the RUSH poster, and the Mayor Goldie Wilson poster.
  • "It's fu*&ing Chucky!"
  • I wonder if there were any "War Games" Easter Eggs in this film, since it featured prominently in the novel.  I don't remember seeing any.

I really enjoyed the movie, and was happy that I enjoyed it.  Does that make sense?  Rudy started reading the book upon my recommendation, and he was stunned at how spot on I was when I said that he would like it.  Since I was willing to see the film again, but in IMAX 3D, I met up with him the other night to watch it before the IMAX theaters change over to "Rampage", which opens this weekend.  This time, I wore my DeLorean shirt from the Awesome 80s race.

  • Rudy said the spell used for the Orb of Osuvox was from something.  Later, I let him know that it was the spell from the film "Excalibur".
  • Seeing the film in this format was a great decision!  This film was made for IMAX as it was immersive and gorgeously done.  The Overlook and the maze segment scared me, though.
  • Rudy and I kept pointing at stuff.  I don't think anyone could hear him because the volume was so high, but we were both excited throughout the film.

So Spielberg and I can still be friends.  OK, I wish I was his friend!  Thank you, Steven, for the great flick!

Vanguard Forever

DCI Semifinals
Friday, August 11, 2017
Lucas Oil Stadium
Indianapolis, IN

We got a late start in the morning so instead of eating breakfast, we went straight to Tastings for our traditional Semifinals lunch.  The hostess asked if we'd been there before, and when we told her we were old hats at this, she gave us our menus and tended to a table of newbies.  To eat, we ordered Sesame Encrusted Ahi Tuna, Filet Mignon Salad, Shrimp Ceviche, and Goat Cheese & Fig Pizza.  It was all delicious.

Wines:

- Didn't Like

1st round:
S: 2015 Snoquamie Winemaker's Select Reisling*
V: 2015 Force of Nature Cabernet Sauvignon* -- something for which we have bottles at home, but it's themed to SCV.
R:  2014 Yardsock Cabernet Sauvignon*

2nd round:
S: 2014 Sexual Chocolate Red Blend -
V: 2014 Tooth & Nail "The Stand" Red Blend +
R: 2014 Louis Latour Domaine De Valmoissine Pinot Noir -

3rd round:
S: 2015 Toschi Vineyards Moscato

We had Marquis Cake for dessert.  That was tasty, too, especially the rum-soaked genoise cake.

We then walked to Lucas Oil, and searched for the booth so I could pick up my bib for the 5K.  It wasn't there.  So we went inside and I bought an SCV cap as well as shirt for my friend's daughter.  I tried to buy the Mandarins What the Heck shirt, but they weren't open.  Everyone else was open, but I was told they were running late.  I didn't have time to wait, so I left the booth, hoping that the limited edition shirt would still be available when I returned.  I made it to the seating area just in time to hear the US Army Band play the Star-Spangled Banner.

Our seats were in Section 141, Row 5, Seats 5-7.  We were up close and on the left 40-yard line.

*Top 12 advance to Finals

SPARTANS -- 73.475
I saw one of the pit members toss a mallet to each other.  I don't know if that was choreographed, but they were smiling.  I also don't know if that happened more than once in the show.  Their sleeves are even more sparkly up close!  The last flag has social media icons on it.
Last Flag

MUSIC CITY -- 74.275
"If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go with the tribe."
They make the appearance of smoke with their black and gray tulle before they make the fire with the ribbons.  That's cool.  They climb atop the marimbas and growl.  One guy kicked short DCI cone.  Rude.
Trumpet Soloist

GENESIS -- 76.213
V:  "Big Ass Brushes.  B.A.B."
Great job, everyone!  Brass and drums kicked butt.  That little girl with the umbrella is pretty good!  The red CG uniform has faces on it.  It looks like it represents art, like the Madonna and Child.
Future Color Guard Captain

LEGENDS -- 76.225
I don't think they love the signal because they seem to be in pain when they cover their ears and bend over.  Very nice sound from the horns.  Aw, the drum major is crying.
Be Careful Up There!

PACIFIC CREST -- 78.000
My eyes are leaking!  The show was so good:  solos went well, CG was on point, brass and percussion did very well.  Wow.  The pit uses a bow against the marimba during the lead-in to the Giacchino.  Thank you for the wonderful show, PC!  I will always love and remember this one.
PC

OREGON CRUSADERS -- 79.050
Oh, there are the compass pieces!  I would that follow that drum major anywhere.  I almost breathed with her every time she puffed up her cheeks for the brass entrances.  A good conductor makes you feel the music as if you're standing in their spot.  I was almost in tears for the ballad.  Beautiful.
Puffing Out Cheeks

SPIRIT OF ATLANTA -- 80.075
"We are here!"
Choir corps during the last piece.
We Are Here

<Intermission>
I quickly walked to the Mandarins booth.  A girl was there whom didn't have enough money to pay for her shirt.  I overheard the woman tell her that maybe she'll get lucky and someone would give her a couple of bucks.  She stepped aside, and I moved up to the front of the line.  Then she proceeded to help someone else.  Ummm..what?!   Then the same person she helped instead of me wanted to put money in the fuel fund can and reached over me to do so.  No, she didn't think of going around me.  I kept my composure and inched up closer to the cashier (I maybe had 2 inches to go to get in her face).  She asked if she could help me and I asked if they had the tank top in my size, which they did.  Yay!  I tried to give the other gal a couple of dollars, but she said she had enough money; they just wouldn't let her pay with cash + card.  I asked the woman if they could split it to use both, and she said no.  Then she thought of something else she could do, and was successful.  The girl was able to purchase the same shirt I was buying, and she went away happy.  The cashier gave me a free Mandarins rubber bracelet because I'm nice.  I guess it paid off for me not to go all ballistic when she didn't help me.

I also bought a Cadets shirt for a friend's daughter, but it took me forever to decide because most of the shirts had the name of this year's show, and I don't like the show.  I don't know if she liked the show, either.  I did end up getting her one with the long intro that irritates me, but I didn't want to get her another black shirt, and I didn't know if she'd be OK with the ones with the crosses.  Why don't they have more generic shirts?  Ugh.

BLUE DEVILS B -- 80.050
V thinks the girls in the pit have their hair in pigtails because they're portraying kids.  That is a very long high note, Mister trumpet soloist!
BD-B

TROOPERS -- 80.075
I would have totally blown my horn forever for that drum major.  He just kept asking for more in the Nessun Dorma, which was beautiful.  I would also like to dance with him, because he danced while he conducted.
Fencing Steps

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD CADETS -- 81.975
I met Tracer's mom.  Tracer goes to school with my friend's daughter.  The mom wasn't impressed that I knew someone that knew him.  I guess I should have realized that it was probably her son's last performance of the year with SCVC and not cared so much that she blew me off.  Sorry to distract you, Tracer's mom.  I yelled "...GUARD!!!!" because I didn't know when the yell was supposed to happen.  Love that drumline!  I like seeing the drum major smile at them.
Awesome soloist

Dan Potter interviewed drum major Jessica and she said she thought it was their best performance yet.  He said that no matter what, we would see them on Finals night because they would play their encore as Open Class Champions.  What would happen if they actually made Finals?  Would they have to play twice?  I would like to see SCVC make this a dilemma for DCI one day.

THE ACADEMY -- 84.188
Oh, now I get that part:  the hunters throw their rifles in the air in succession, and the bunnies try to hit their head with rifles while they're looking up to catch their own.  V had to tell me when the bunnies have carrots in their mouths because I'm always too late to see it.  If anything makes me smile this drum corps season, it's the Academy's show.  Nice pas de deux with the Hunter & Bunny as the pirouettes, even though it disturbs me.  I like when the brass players hop like bunnies.
Catching a Rifle with Carrot

THE COLTS -- 83.888
"Left side! Right side! Both sides!"  I like the melody, I just don't want the singing.
Math Symbols

Dan Potter showed a quilt that his wife made for today's raffle.  It's made of drum corps shirts.  That's cool!

MANDARINS -- 85.550
The drum major is so awesome! They showed her on the big screen when she was making her growly face.  I usually like Mandarins color guard, but this year I LOVE them.  They were just ON tonight.  Oops, somebody left their orange saber on the black sheer cover and it traveled with it as they covered the field.
So Intense

MADISON SCOUTS -- 86.475*
I didn't notice the oxygen tanks last night.  Neither did V.  I'd better not breathe with them, or I'll hyperventilate.  V wondered why the brass players weren't wearing bandannas over their mouths.  They're scarier up close.  Cool visual after the explosion sound as they throw their orange flags horizontally into the air.
Breathe!

CROSSMEN -- 88.488*
I like that main theme.  They do flips on the bars.  I like their plumes.
Rifle Toss

Brandt Crocker announced that there was a deluge outside, and two of the corps were stuck in it, so we needed to wait as they dried off.  We had a 10-minute delay.  Yes, even when the event is in a dome, we still have rain delays.

BLUE STARS -- 88.975*
I don't like the transition between the Gatsby and the Moulin Rouge sections.  I could hear more of the Prokofiev now: it's mixed in with "The Montagues and the Capulets".  We met people later while in line for food, and they were a father and sister of someone in this corps.  He said, "They dropped one."  I hadn't noticed.  The guy behind us said the show was about fairy tales.  I don't remember hearing about Romeo and Juliet killing themselves in any of the fairy tales of my youth, but most fairy tales are based on Grimm stories which are kind of scary, so maybe?
Blue Stars Desk

<Intermission>
I went outside to pick up my packet for the 5K.  When the staff member stamped my hand, the ink was very faint on my skin, so she had to do it again.  I explained to the people waiting, "I'm brown."  They looked at me like I was nuts.  We had extra intermission time due to the rain so Phregiment's flags could be dried.  It's a good thing, too, because it took me forever just to get through the Marketplace after getting my packet, and the concession lines were long.  Concessions was disappointing today: they weren't ready for the intermission despite the 10-minute delay, and they ran out of stuff.  They also didn't give me the kind of pizza that I settled for when they didn't have the salad I wanted.  Oh well.  At least it wasn't salty, like V's nachos grande.  We went back to our seats to eat our dinner.

PHANTOM REGIMENT -- 89.888*
V wasn't sure what a "Phantasm" was.  I decided that it is a Phantom Orgasm.  I just don't understand why, when you have all those instruments on the field, you need to have recorded music.

Dan P interviewed the Phantasm and wore her face mask.  He also put it on the camera so we could try to see through it.  Now she's going to have to wash that before Finals.
Dan Potter Being Silly

BLUE KNIGHTS -- 91.013*
The second drum major leaves his podium during the show and interacts with the color guard before going to the backfield, and the third drum major goes to his place.  I like seeing the expressions on the faces of the drummers.  They are clearly having fun.
BK Drum Major and CG

THE CADETS -- 91.738*
The one part of the show V does like is when they use the purple flags which match the stained glass window backdrops at the end.  My favorite part is that it ends.  Actually, since we were on the left side, I got to hear more of the brass when they played on the pews.  At one point, there were 24 trombones.  That's a LOT of trombones.  Not quite the 76 in The Music Man, but a lot nonetheless.  The guy behind us liked this show, partly because they squeezed a whole hour of the original composition into 12 minutes.  You know, unlike any of the other 12-minute shows we've seen tonight.
Stained Glass

BOSTON CRUSADERS -- 93.4*
I like the "Wicked Game" segment.  Vocal soloist Aubrey does a great job with that song.  I know her name because Dan P interviewed her afterward.
Folks behind us:   "The burning was wonderful."  Yeah, that's disturbing.  One of those folks thought that the show was about the Hunger Games until his wife or whomever informed him that it was about the Salem Witch Trials.
Those are people, not flames

THE CAVALIERS -- 94.925*
The CG uniforms are so form-fitting that they look like they're tattooed onto them.  I like this show more now that I understand the narration.  Yes, I actually needed the narration for this one.  The show is about communication, so I'm going to rely on that to help my existential conundrum about this.  "Duuuude!  Buddyyyy!...After 2000 years, that's what they've come up with."
Spinning Tenors

BLUECOATS -- 95.213*
V noticed that the pit instruments were jagged, too.  I like that the drummers also do some choreography with their hats.  Yes, a trombone player hands his hat to the drum major.  The use of the wah-wah pedal with the trumpet duet is cool.

CAROLINA CROWN -- 96.588*
Bro explained the show to us before it started because V and I had a ton of questions.  Oh, so this is a statement show.  What an awesome brass section!  They were so strong that our seats vibrated.  Bro thinks it's because the audience was stamping their feet.
Guy behind us:  "What's that song?  It's from Broadway.  Frozen, I think."
Somehow he didn't fall down

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD -- 97.70*
Ohmygosh, ohmygosh, ohmygosh!  NEW Ouroborous!!!!!  Have they had those underneath the red covers this whole time?!?!  It's magic!  My throat is sore from all of the screaming. That was incredible!  I love sitting with fellow SCV fans so we can share our excitement.
Gold Ouroboros

BLUE DEVILS -- 98.112*
Great job, BD!  My goodness that brass line!  They shake their legs like they have bees on them and are trying to make them fly away.

2017 SANTA CLARA VANGUARD ALUMNI CORPS
Members from every year were represented, so participants included folks from the very first Vanguard through last year's age outs.  They played the same music that we heard at Stanford, but they wore uniforms and marched around a little bit. Little girls danced with their mothers on the field. Everyone went bananas when they did the Bottle Dance.   Our whole SCV section went nuts for pretty much the entire show.  It was awesome.  I was happy that current SCV and SCVC members were allowed to watch the show because that is their corps' history right there.  Many tears were shed during "Send in the Clowns", on the field and in the stands alike.  And now I'm about to cry again.  Thank you, SCV, for making this such a special evening.  You will always be in my heart as the best, the classiest, and the greatest drum corps ever.

Scores for the last block were announced...except for the last two, which irritated all of us, so we left to go party.

The SCV Semifinals After Party took place at The Tow Yard, which was a bit of a walk, so I was quite warm and needed the cold beer.  I had their Raspberry Porter, which I thought was tasty.  We also got food included with our tickets: chicken fingers, hot wings, and pretzel bites, which were like pretzel buns but really small.  Charles Frost thanked us all for coming, and he had DMs Chris and Carl with him.  Bro wanted my bestie to go to bed because SCV had some tenths to overcome in their score.  I played Simon.  Bro almost got someone else's drink because the guy didn't know who ordered them.  V pointed out that the food on her plate was phallic.  I did not take a picture, and am regretting that at the moment.
Cheers!

What a fun, SCV-filled day!
