Blue Pink Scorches in SB

 Western Corps Connection
Sunday, June 30, 2024
San Bernardino Valley College
San Bernardino, CA

Bro picked me up at my house and we stopped at Miguel's Jr. in Rialto before going to the college.  Their birria is pretty good, and we enjoyed our early dinner.

When we got closer to the venue, who should we see in front of us, but the Santa Clara Vanguard caravan!  He thought of maybe just following them wherever since we were still early and because his license plate makes it look like he's part of the group anyway.

So happy to see the trucks again!

We passed them instead, and Bro made a strange not a left turn into one of the parking lots, but it was on the opposite side of the campus.  He found a spot that had some shade, which wasn't exactly right next to the stadium, but still an OK walk.  It was a hot day, and Bro didn't want to watch warmups because he knew the corps would take up all the shade and he would just be on hot grass.  Besides, the shade was about to come down on our section of the stadium.  I went shopping and bought a green DCI shirt that I had seen the day before.

It's a bit of a scorcher

When we showed our tickets at the gate, Rudy and Skye were just inside, contemplating on whether or not they should get kettlecorn.  They only had regular popcorn at the concession stand, though, so we went to our seats.  I went to the restroom first and used the elevator to go up because a) it's hot; secondly) I'm lazy; 3) I'm fancy.  Our seats were in Section 3, Row R, Seats 15-18, on the right 35-45 yard lines.

The Star-Spangled Banner was a recorded instrumental version, and the flag was on the video board because I guess it's so hot here that all of the flags on the tall poles melted.  Or they didn't want to risk them catching fire from the one a few miles away.  But wait.  We're going to see flags here today, so none of that makes any sense, as usual.

The other announcer was here, and Bro and I immediately missed Ryan from yesterday because there were already a lot of errors and the first corps hadn't even taken the field.

FREELANCERS ALUMNI
The soprano solist was en fuego today!  I feel like they have one soloist that does great one day, then the next not as great, but still good, then the other soloist has his day.  Hey, I'm not out there in 105-degree heat, so more power to them for doing so.

VESSEL
The drum major's hair was half black and half blond, like the corps uniforms.  We couldn't figure out which half was Happy, and which half was Not Satisfied.  They were much better on "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".  They had amplification issues.  The guy in front of us said that they are now a group in WGI, which now makes sense as to why they have so many drummers in the corps.

I heart double flags

I'm going to call the guy "PC guy" for the rest of this post because he had a PC corps jacket, but didn't wear it because it was just way too hot.   He had told Rudy some stuff during the evening even though I don't think Rudy actually asked for the information.  Bro was fine with it since it was correct information.

IMPULSE
Rudy thought the fruit was a strawberry.  I told you that the apple needs to be bigger!  Uh oh.  Runaway Rifle.  That particular guard gal had quite a bit of trouble with her equipment today.  Rudy did not notice the Playbill flags.  I had to show my photos of them to him instead.

Oh, it's the Brooklyn Bridge!

Her uniform gives me Hamilton vibes

BLUE DEVILS C
The electric guitar warm up / amp test today was Michael Jackson's "Beat It".  Bro told me that each of the BD corps has a different test song on different days.  Well, that's fun!  Bro asked if he was looking at a portable purple harp.  I told him yes, unless it was a very large autoharp.  I remember our music teacher playing that in elementary school and I always wanted to play one.  It never happened. Thanks to the narration, I know that this story is based on Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree", which is my favorite book.  Yes, I actually wrote "thanks to the narration".  The world may end soon.  I honestly didn't understand what was going on in the show yesterday, even though I liked the music.  I like how they act like airplanes when they go back to the field during "Come Sail Away".  Because lyrics. To a song that none of these kids had probably ever heard until they were told they were going to play this song.   Aw, what a cute hug at the end.  Rudy giggled a lot at the little tykes, as usual.

BLUE DEVILS B
They have columns.  Does PC break those?  Nice synchronization of flag work in that last segment.  Either they have a bunch of short people in their corps, or a lot of them seem to be the same age as those in BD-C.

GOLD
I really like the Beethoven arrangement.  Bro does not.  He doesn't think it really fits with the mood of the show, although he realizes that it would probably be a pretty boring show if they performed it as written.  Before the percussion feature, the bass drummers raise their drums up over their heads to get to their position on the field.  The percussion feature was very good.  Bro feels badly for Gold because no matter how well they do, there's always somebody like BDB or SCVC or the Spartans to prevent them from getting to the top of the ladder.  Your time will come, Gold.

<Intermission>

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD
I like the way the drum notes are the same as the horns.  Do you know how hard that is when they do those runs?  Especially on the Kendrick Lamar piece?  We haven't even heard much of the other stuff, and I'm in awe of the way the play the heck out of it.  "I hope you find some peace of mind."  And now that's in my head again. The horns were much cleaner today.  OK, some of the vagabonds are holding rifles in their packs, and some of them are holding flags.  I bet some of the are holding sabers for a part we haven't seen yet.

Drums from new partnership between
SCV and this company.

PACIFIC CREST
My favorite part was not as good as yesterday, but Bro thinks it's because they were having microphone issues since we couldn't hear the cool contra part very well.  I love the way that the frame folds when they're done with it.  Bro didn't know why they even need to use them anyway.  I agree.  Are their brown uniforms supposed to be the columns of the bed?  Or other furniture?

Their stance means something and
I haven't figured it out yet.

MANDARINS
Rudy saw the awesome sets way before he was supposed to, because they had them facing the field all afternoon.  He tried to forget about it, and the reveal is amazing anyway.  OK, that's not my boyfriend singing on the recording; it's some woman with a deep alto voice singing "I Put A Spell On You".  No hats were harmed in the performance of this show, because they now wear chin straps to keep them on.  Someone did a drop a coat, though, which distracted Rudy, who thought they were pants.  PANTS?  How does one drop their pants on the field during the show and still go unnoticeable?

Wait.  Did Ryan T show up to announce?  Because he said the next corps' name just like Ryan T.  When did he get here?

BLUE DEVILS
I like the way they move when next to the merry go round horses.  BD is trying to get the brass trophy back with that cleanliness.  They should just call themselves the "Blue & Pink Devils" because they tend to wear that combination a lot.  Or "Blue Pink" like the K-Pop band.  Bro likes when the big props turn into the stairs.  I don't like when they're open and I can see inside their bureau, though.   Even when one of them looks like it's Barbie's bureau.

BD again had the highest score in the nation tonight, with a few corps yet to join in the fray.

Our walk back to our cars was a bit spooky because it was now dark and we weren't sure that we were going in the right direction.  Rudy and Skye did park nearby, but not quite in the same lot as us.  Bro offered to drop me off at Yaamava on the way home because he knew I'd be there the next night to see NKOTB.  But I declined, because I needed clothes.  And a shower.  And a bed.

Drum Corps continues for us after Independence Day.  Happy ID4, everyone!

Everything Old is New Again

 Corps at the Crest
Saturday, June 29, 2024
Hilmer Lodge Stadium, Mt. San Antonio College
Walnut, CA

It's Drum Corps Time!!!!!  For those of you that read this blog regularly, the Hawaii posts will return, probably after the California drum corps shows are done.  Thank you for your patience.

This year's Corps at the Crest was kind of strange because there was no Vista show this year.  Instead, Pacific Crest decided to host two shows in Walnut:  the first day for Students only, and the second day for us old people who no longer go to school.  Or something like that.  I think that the reason was that the Rose Bowl was not available for this particular weekend, and in order to still get the attendance they normally get, the Los Angeles area show was split into two performances at Mt. SAC.  Then when they did not sell out the Friday show, they sent announcements during the day that seats were available to the general public.  Bro was on a plane, so he couldn't make it.  I didn't see the announcement until too late because I was working.  So I missed SCV's first performance after their hiatus, and I was a bit bummed about that, but at least I didn't see them without Bro, which would have made me feel a little guilty. He, on the other hand, would not have had guilty feelings because let's face it, it was his corps first.

All of D'Saints were scheduled to be at this show, but V wasn't feeling well, so it was just Bro and the kids.  The kids had not been to a competitive drum corps show before, although they had been to the Oxnard show for their exhibition performances, and also to Blue Devils Family Day.

Bro drove us to Mt. SAC and asked if I realized that Cal Poly Pomona was so close to Mt. SAC.  I had not.  The nephew was accepted to college there this year, but opted to go elsewhere.  Mt. SAC used to be the place where Arcadia HS would hold its field tournament competition for the Festival of Bands, so Bro and I were familiar with the place.  I asked Bro if he had seen pictures of the stadium.  He had not.  He was in for quite the treat, because I was blown away by how much it had changed since we were last there.  The parking lot was the same, although now they have a parking structure which we didn't use.  We parked and saw that Glenn had also just arrived, so we all walked toward the tunnel to go under the street and into the area outside the stadium, which contained the DCI Marketplace.  I told Bro to turn left, and we headed toward the Pep Wear area where they once again had Santa Clara Vanguard merchandise.  Yay!  I bought a baseball jersey, and decided that other stuff would need to wait another day because I had already spent $99.00 on one thing.

We showed our digital tickets and I saw that the VIP Experience was in a nice indoor location for the VIPs to get their food.  I had opted out of that this year because I pictured little pull-up canopies like they had at Vista, and didn't want to subject my friends to that.  But they did have a nice area behind our seats with little tables to eat their food, so I'm thinking about that for next year if they return to Mt. SAC.  We got in line for food because we all knew that the earlier you get food the better at these things due to people arriving late and more kids being done with their shows, wanting to get food before sitting down with their parents in the stands.  I liked the variety of foods available at their concession stand, because you could opt for grilled food or croissant sandwiches, and they also had the usual chips and sweets.  I opted for a turkey sandwich on a croissant.  Bro also liked that they listed what flavors of Gatorade were available, because often the line gets held up by people asking what kind of flavors they have, and the workers only know what color they are.  I got fruit punch flavored Gatorade (red).

We went up to the stands, and Tim and his friend Sam were already in their seats.  Tim's son, Clark, was supposed to join us, but he wasn't feeling well either.  Aw, I would have loved to have seen Clark, and hope that he joins us next year.  Sam marched with Tim up at Cal, and Tim gave him commentary between shows to give him perspective, as Sam had not been to a drum corps show in 36 years.  A LOT has changed since then!  I'm glad that Tim sat next to me so that I could listen to his expertise and chime in once in a while with spectator expertise.  :)

Our seats were in Section E, Row KK, seats 5-13, from about the left 35-yard line to the right 45-yard line, at the top of our section.  I think.  There were no field markers painted on the green.  Those of us that had been to Mt. SAC before all marveled at the remodel.  We now had some shade, and they had a real press box!  The seats we were in were regular individual seats, not bench type, although they did have the bench seating in other sections.  Olivia noticed that my phone matched my maroon seat.  So color-coordinated!  There wasn't a lot of leg room for passers by because of the drink holders, but I was OK with that, especially because we had some seat room due to two absences.

The Star-Spangled Banner was performed a capella by soloist Bianca Dumonde.  Nice and simple, and well sung.

Hi, Ryan T!  Good to hear the Voice of Southern California again!  I told Sam that Ryan was my drum major the year that I marched in the Rose Parade.  Tim told him that Ryan was also in Velvet Knights.

As always, I will be providing each corps' repertoire at only the first show that I view them.

CALGARY STETSON SHOW BAND
They played at standstill, on the track.  I don't think that they are officially SoundSport, just exhibition.  I like their black stetsons!  Also, they sang a song that I'm familiar with, but I don't know the title.  One of the songs was "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk.  Their show was fun.

FREELANCERS ALUMNI CORPS
Repertoire:  Eleanor Rigby by Lennon-McCartney, Bridge Over Troubled Water by P. Simon, Spain by C. Corea

Freelancers is a SoundSport group, and also play at standstill.  Nice solos!  It looks like the corps members liked them, too.

I looked up at the hill behind the visitor stands, and wondered if there was a stormtrooper watching us.  Because I have Star Wars on the brain.

IMPULSE
Repertoire: "That New York Feeling" -- Empire State of Mind by A. Hunte, J. Sewell-Ulepic, S. Carter, A. Keys, et al; New York, New York by J. Kander and F. Ebb; Welcome to New York by T. Swift and R. Tedder;  In the Heights by L-M Miranda; Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse by L.T. Wayne (Metro Boomin) | et al

Membership is the largest I've seen in a long time.  I pointed out the electric violin and electric cello to the nephew.  "Is that a thing?"  Yes, it's a thing.  I like the purplish flags during "Empire".  Apples.  I wonder if they will have bigger ones by Finals Week, because those are a little too small for the big field.  Go, Guard!  Ooh, I love those Playbill flags!  I like this show, and I'm pretty sure it's not done yet.

<Intermission>
Bro was irritated that there was already an intermission.  It turns out that Golden Empire was supposed to compete in this spot, but they were not here.  Bro explained to the nephew that they don't just go forward to the next corps because their time had been set a long time ago and they have their timing set accordingly.  Once Bro figured out the reason for the early intermission, he wasn't irritated anymore.

VESSEL
Repertoire: "Happy? Not Satisfied!" -- Girls Just Want to Have Fun by R. Hazard; Light My Love by Jake, Josh and Sam Kiszka. D. Wagner; Cogworks by S.E. Brown

They're fron San Dimas now?  That's a lot of drums.  Pretty blue ombre double flags.  They had some intonation issues, and the show is not finished yet.

See how the uniforms are black/white on one side,
and colorful on the other?  Also, the length is different.

BLUE DEVILS C
Repertoire:  "The Gifts We Receive" -- Forever Young by M. Gold, B. Lloyd & F. Mertens; Everybody Wants to Rule the World by R. Orzabal, I. Stanley & C. Hughes; A House is Not a Home by B. Bacharach & H. David; Come Sail Away by D. DeYoung; You'll Be in My Heart by P. Collins

They tested the amps with the theme from "Angry Birds", which none of us but Brady could figure out, because he used to play it every day.  I played the Star Wars version, so that would not have helped.  The early theme for this year is "Apples".  Yup, they had those props, too, but not as apple-shaped as those in Impulse.  The flag with the Blue Devils icon hit one of the palm tree fronds, but the tree stayed upright.  I like the way they came full circle by ending with "Forever Young".  Those little guard kids are already doing the partnership saber toss with one tossing it, and the person behind them catching it.  Nice!

BLUE DEVILS B
Repertoire: "Sacred Geometry" -- Ordo Virtutum by Hildegard of Bingen; O Magnum Mysterium by T. L. de Victoria; Geometry by S. Clark & C. Tantavirojin; Primacy of Number by P. Glass; Stabat Mater by J-C Gandrille; The Laws of Nature by S. Clark & C. Tantavirojin; Once Upon a Castle by M. Daugherty

Go, Kiyoshi!!!  Tim's friend's son plays baritone for BDB.

Beautiful opener of "O Magnum".  I'm familiar with that song because I sang it in college choir, and I loved it then, too.  Very nice French Horn solo.  Those drums are cool with the pink and yellow.  The battery feature was very good.  They need to fix their lilnes and get more in sync with the flags, but it's still early.  They made me miss Vanguard Cadets a lot, and Bro came over to basically say the same thing and opined that some of the folks who would have been in SCVC were probably in BDB this year.  Neither one of them marched last year.

GOLD
Repertoire:  "In Memory Of" -- Un Nouveau Méchant (A New Villian) by F. Rice;  Everybody Wants to Rule the World by R. Orzabal, I. Stanley & C. Hughes; Faust Symphony S.108 -- Part I -- Faust by F. Liszt; Darkness of Light by G. Dombrowski; Faust Symphony S.108 -- Part III-- Mephistopheles by F. Liszt; Symphony No. 7 - II. Allegretto by L. van Beethoven; Symphony No. 5 -- IV.  Adagietto by G. Mahler; Rebirth by S. Director; The Prayer by D. Foster

I saw the one person in the old school uniform and thought this was going to be one of those tribute shows to the old days. It was not.  "War does not determine who is right; only who is lost."  The Beethoven was very nice.

<Real Intermission>
I went up the stairs and walked a ways to find stairs that were unoccupied and much easier to descend the ones in the stands.  The restroom was by the concession stands, which is a little far.  I later found out that there were some behind the stands, near the elevator, but I think those probably had much fewer stalls, so it was all good.  I could see my peeps from the grassy hilly area where kids were rolling down earlier, and took stalker pictures of them from that vantage point before actually taking pictures of the stadium itself.

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD
Repertoire: "Vagabond" -- United in Grief by K. Duckworth, S. Dew, M. Spears, J. Pounds, D. Timothy ,M. Schaeffer & Kosi; The All-Seeing Sky by J. Psathas; With Reckless Abandon by M. Karlsson; Mirrorball by G. Garvey, C. Potter, M. Potter, P. Turner, & R. Jupp

Vanguard!!!  So happy to see them back on the field, even though they're wearing blue with their red instead of the traditional green.  Last year, SCV took a hiatus due to financial issues, and said they probably wouldn't be back until 2025.  They surprised us all by announcing that they were returning this season.  Vanguard Cadets is not marching this year, so they're saving money there, and they've also done other stuff to bounce back to make sure they don't become a yesteryear corps.  So Bro and I both independently decided that this must be why they don't have big props on the field.  Bro said that it must be "Bring Your Own Field Markers" Day since they were the second corps today to have them.  Or maybe the field markers are the props.  I don't know.  It's the first time for me to see this show.  We gave them a standing ovation as they took the field.  I have missed them terribly, and I had a tear in my eye as I applauded happily.

Their snare drums are a very deep beautiful red, and I like the hues of their uniforms.  Very striking.  I like the red sleeves against the blue.  They have a blue V reminiscent of the Babylon checkmark on their blue uniforms, while those wearing red have a red V. The corps members are wearing a kind of sling carrier.  Beautiful french horn solo, as well as the french horn / mellophone duet.  The big light blue flags were a beautiful effect, which APPARENTLY were in the slings that the corps members carried.    The show is not finished, but they sounded great!  Welcome back, old friends.

MANDARINS
Repertoire: "Vieux Carre" --The Jungle & All Rise by W. Marsalis; Agape by N. Britell / In the Sweet By and By by J. Webster and S. F. Bennett; Lie to Me by T. Shorty, C. Seefreid & S. Abingdon

Glenn and I like the name of the show because we like that cocktail.  They rolled their big props onto the area just outside the end zone during SCV's show and I was irritated.  Bro figured out later that it was because they weren't allowed to leave their big heavy things on the very nice track.  I didn't like that it was so close to the performers.  You can actually see them in the photo of SCV above.  The backdrop of the big props was black and white facades of buildings in New Orleans.  Very cool opener with a soloist playing jazz, and then the backdrop falls and there are the corps members in front of bright, colorful backdrops with jazz instruments on them.  That got a lot of "oohs" from the crowd!  Cool trio during the jazz funeral section.  There are ghosts and parasols.  People dropped, like, 5 hats and I was distracted by them being on the field.  That's what I miss about the drum judges being on the field with the corps:  they would pick up the stuff and put it on the sidelines.  One of the colorguard members did pick up one of the hats, but I'm sure it distracted everyone as they moved around the field.

PACIFIC CREST
Repertoire: "The Broken Column" -- Benediction and Dream by E. Goldenthal; Burning Red by E. Goldenthal; Harmonielehre by J. Adams; California Counterpoint: The Twittering Machine by C. McTee; Ramalama Bang Bang by M. J. Herbert & R. Murphy; Passage by C. Yih Shih / ...And the Mountains Rising Nowhere by J. Schwanter

Nice drum major salute with the dress!  I like that funky section, while they're moving the frames from side to side.  Nice sound, horns!  I don't really understand this show, but I don't know the Frida Kahlo story.  Perhaps I should watch that movie.  Or read.

BLUE DEVILS
Repertoire: "The Romantics" -- Romantics Whisper by D. Glyde; And the Heavens Shall Tremble by R. Brower & M. Uelmen; Fable Legends (Title Theme) by R. Shaw; Merry Go Round by J. Hisaishi; Shattered Pixel by D. Glyde; Game Girl by D. Glyde; Time by B. Porter; Distance by D. Glyde; Can You Hear the Music by L. Goransson; Poor Things (Finale) by J. Fendrix

Capes!  I want one.  Ooh, Merry Go Round horses!  Oh, they open up the boxes to get their stuff from the cubbies inside.  Then they change to black/white scenery at the end.  I like the silhouette of the guy with the cape on top of the steps, making it look like he climbed one of the mountains.  Run with hoops!  They even held up a few horizontally next to each other, and rolled another one across them.  Horns were so clean!  This was the favorite show of the majority of people in our car.  I'm not quite into it yet, but that's kind of how I am about BD shows.  I think I'm just overstimulated with so much stuff to see the first time.

Encore
Pacific Crest played their funky song!  Yay!  They heard my request!  They also played their drum feature before playing their signature song, Biebl's Ave Maria.  I think this is a new arrangement, but I might have said that last year, too.

World Class:
4) 62.70 -- Pacific Crest
3) 71.25 -- Mandarins
2) 72.35 -- Santa Clara Vanguard
1) 77.10 -- Blue Devils

Scores weren't too surprising, but it is notable that BDB scored higher than PC.

Tim said that he thinks the caliber of the talent is higher than in previous years.  I agree.  I'm impressed that Vessel has so many members now.  I also think that with the dissolution of The Cadets and SCVC still on hiatus, their corps members needed a place to go, so the talent spread out a little bit.  Regardless, this is a promising start to the season.  Sam enjoyed the show, so I hope he joins us again next year.  The niece and nephew enjoyed the show, and the niece asked Bro lots of good questions.

They pointed out to me that there were a couple of Blue Devils with their capes in the DCI Marketplace and that it was my chance to get one.  We got a closer look at the stormtrooper-looking thing, and it was actually some kind of electrical outlet.  Sooo. closer to R2-D2?  We all walked back to the parking lot through the tunnel after Glenn bought a DCI shirt that he had been eyeing since we arrived.  Thank you to Mt. SAC for the nice new venue!  I hope we get to return.

How Do You Say "Twofer" in Hawaiian?

  Pella in Paradise
Day 4: Friday, October 6, 2023
Rockapella at The Blue Note Hawaii (2 shows)
Honolulu, HI

Bro and V hiked up to the Pillbox to watch the sunrise.  I stayed at the house and took pictures from the balcony of their room, and listened to roosters.  Maybe just one rooster that kept hitting his internal snooze alarm.  I don't know.

After they returned, we were all very hungry, and got dressed to go to breakfast at Boots & Kimo's.  We joined the queue outside the restaurant and decided what to eat because we were required to put in our order before being seated.  Inside the restaurant was a lot of memorabilia, mostly sports.

Wheaties boxes above our table

The food was delicious!  I had the Blueberry French Toast with Macadamia Sauce.  The toast was made with sweet Hawaiian bread, and I was happy!  I also had an iced coffee which took a while to get to me, but it's all good.  I only really noticed because it had been warm outside and I was thirsty.    I also had some of V's papaya, but I didn't want any lemon juice on it, so she kindly gave some to me before squeezing the lemon, which, yes, squirted to not just her plate.   I was just glad it missed my eyes.

Blueberry French Toast

Papaya with Slice of Lemon

It's a Rockapella Day!

The line was quite long by the time we left the restaurant, so I was glad that we were still on California time and had arrived early.

On our drive home, we passed by this house and actually turned around to take pictures because the metal sculpture was really cool.  Like, I bet the inside of this house, or at least the backyard, could be a museum.

Bro and V took some time to rest as I did my nails.  By the time we were supposed to have lunch, none of us were really hungry, so we decided to go get some shave ice.  You know I can't be in Hawaii without having that.  Actually, maybe the first time I went to Hawaii, I didn't have shave ice.  No wonder I don't talk about that trip very often.

We took more of Mona's advice and drove to Island Snow.  It was inside a Patagonia store, which was confusing to us, but who am I to judge?  Just someone that wants some yummy shave ice.  I ordered one with mango, lychee, and guava flavors, and added mochi and condensed milk.

Happy D'Saints with Shave Ice

See that gourd hanging at the bottom of the photo?
This was my 4th or 5th attempt at capturing that on camera because
we were always going too fast.

Outside Buzz's.
Were those pumpkins there when we ate dinner?
We don't know.  It was dark then.

I like my nail color.
Whoa, my skin was already really dark that day.

We took it home with us to enjoy on the lanai.  Now whenever I eat mochi, I think of V's story of trying to order mochi on top of her dole whip at Disneyland and I giggle.  A lot.  Like right now as I type this.  The shave ice was delicious, by the way.

Gecko might also have wanted shave ice,
but I refused to give up any of mine.
Maybe if he had asked in an Australian accent,
... I would have screamed, dropped it, and ran away.

We still had a lot of time before leaving for the show.  We were thinking of taking the canoe down to the beach, but it was heavy.
Then I took a dip in the pool until I heard people unlocking the garage door and thought Bro had found the key to the door.  Nope.  It was the guys coming to clean the pool.  So that ended, and instead I watched "Date Night" before getting ready.  I love that movie.  "Hey!  Who likes shirts?"

Do you know how I know that we stayed at the right house besides the fact that it belongs to one of my lifelong friends?  They have the right kind of coffee in the fridge, and they use the right kind of windows.

The best part of wakin' up...

...is Pella on your window!
OK,I know that doesn't rhyme.

Bro drove us to the Outrigger Waikiki resort hotel where the Blue Note was located.  He gave some extra money to the valet so we "would be taken care of" or something like that.  V and I were not really sure what transpired because we walked ahead of him and also we're not used to bribing anyone, especially for a rental car that she and I wondered if we'd ever see again.

6:30 p.m. Show

The line hadn't formed yet, so we took some photos.  This was supposed to be the 2nd day of two shows, but the first day was canceled due to low ticket sales, I think.  I would have been fine with them performing for just the 3 of us, but we didn't pay enough to cover all of the seats in the venue.

Ready to see our boys!

See the odd placement of the 6,
because they deleted the 5?

I asked the gal at the podium where the line would be, and she walked me about 10 feet across the lobby to stand where the stanchions and velvet rope were about to be placed.  Yup, first in line!  Bro and V shopped at the Blue Note gift shop while I stood in line and posted to social media.  They had some cool stuff in there and I bought a drumstick pen and a journal with the Blue Note Hawaii logo.  Alas, they had no Rockapella merchandise, and I was told that it was available on their website.  Oh, like the shirt I was wearing earlier in the day?  OK, thanks.

I returned to the line, and others had also lined up.  Since we were first in line, we had our choice of seats, so naturally, we sat in front because that's what we do.  The tables in the front were kind of like the set up at the Coach House, and there were also booths around the rest of the venue.  Those would be nice to sit at if this was not Rockapella.  We ordered our drinks: a "Blue Note" for me, a "Rock Steady" for Bro, and a "Tequila Sunrise" for V.

I liked all of the music notes in the decor, like this one on the back of each chair.

We ordered our dinner, and it arrived prior to the start of the show, which made me happy because then I could eat before I needed to concentrate on the guys.  The food was pretty good, too.

I don't know why there's a piano on the stage.
Maybe it's too hard to move, or it's a storage issue.

I like the shadow of the glass on the table.

Hamachi Crudo

Seared Ahi with Forbidden Rice

Kalia Pork Tacos

We didn't take any photos during the show because the announcer said no photos.  So here is my hand touching the stage.

Set List!

Rockapella took the stage, and I noticed that CSL4 was wearing his heart from the Valentine's concert in Napa.  I so love that he still wears that thing, mostly because I remember when he wore it the first time.

Rock Around Medley
They started singing this from off the stage, and they were clearly already having fun.  Scott smiled at me.  HI, SCOTT!!!

I think that the guys were confused by the piano.  The stage is already small enough, people!  I mean, I'm sure they had sound check and knew it was there, but it did take some adjustment for the choreography, especially because Manny covers a lot of stage when he dances.

Dancin' in the Streets
JT and his thrusting, I swear.

Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
What kind of dog is CSL4 supposed to be?

Satisfaction
Manny was clowning on Cal.  I love that.

CSL4:  "You guys are very mahalo."  I don't think that means what he thinks it means.  He speaks Japanese, so he gets to use it in Hawaii.

CSL4 talked about being in Branson, but there was no reaction.  "Nope."

Moon River
Cal has been singing professionally for 30 years now.

CSL4 was auditioning for The Temptations show on Broadway when CSL4 saw him and asked him to join Rockapella.

Armand was nominated for a Grammy last year!

CSL4 said that they sing a lot of covers these days, but they used to sing a lot more original songs, and asked if we wanted to hear one of them.  Wait a minute.  I didn't see the next song listed on that piece of paper.  Scott needed to stand up for this one.

I Am Your Man
WHOO HOOO!!!  I whooped in delight, and JT blew a kiss at me.  I'll try not to read into that too much.  I said "try".  I'm glad Bro was there for that, because that was a song they sang at our very first Rockapella show.  He seemed happy.

Rock the Boat
Armand did the 007 theme during his solo.   Geo used to do that, too, but somehow, Armand did a different take on it and made it his own.

Commercials
Someone yelled "Folgers!"  CSL4 informed them that they needed this part of the show as a catharsis, and not audience participation.  I couldn't see where the voice was coming from in order to glare in their general direction.
"Where in the world is Matt Lauer?" They all looked at each other, and one of them said, "Where is he?"
It's been so long since I've seen them that I almost forgot about that part.

Marissa was chosen to join the guys on stage even though she drinks Starbucks.  CSL4 had walked around the audience so much that he didn't know how to get them onto the stage.  Marissa is a waitress at a place on the beach.

Stand By Me
Ain't Too Proud to Beg
Oh, she likes Armand!

Macklemore

CSL4: "We sang this song every day for 59 years..."

Carmen SanDiego
JT interrupted his own solo to say, "Hi, Sherry."  Remember when I said I would try not to read too much into things?  Still trying.
We got to shout "OAHU!" in Oahu!!!

Encore
Up On The Roof / Wonderful World (off mic)

Remember when the food came early?  The check came during the show.  Like, late in the show. I was annoyed and told Bro that for the next show we needed to settle the bill beforehand.

There was no meet and greet, but I did get to talk to JT for a minute.  He said he was sweaty.  I said that he's always sweaty when I see him.  (I'm trying!!!)  "Are you coming to the next one?"
Sher:  "Of course!!"
Pretty sure he already knew the answer, though.  :)

We needed to get in line again, so we went out to the lobby.  When I was coming back from the restroom, Bro indicated that I needed to go into the gift shop.  I said that I'd seen it, so I passed it this time.  He told me that CSL4 was inside.  I turned around and went to the gift shop.

I kinda snuck up on him.  He said that they got a 40% discount and offered to let me shop with it.  Darn my stupid impulse earlier!  We saw a shirt that reminded us both of Fred.  I asked if he was in touch with him.  He said yes, and that "Fred wears the same thing every time.  He's so weird."  He said that the gig on Kauai was set up by a friend of his that lives there, and was happy that we were going there, too.  I wished him a good 2nd show, and he said they were kind of glad that the first night was canceled because they were all still on Eastern time and they were tired.  But they still don't disappoint because they are Rockapella.

My notes at this point say something like "Fight between lobster and one of rocks."  Was there a lobster somewhere in the nearby restaurant?  I don't know.  Maybe it was part of CSL4's story during the first show that I wrote down again because it didn't make sense the first time.  Or the second time, APPARENTLY.

9:00 p.m. Show

Yes, this post is very long, mostly because I'm too lazy to write a Day 4 part 2.  Y'all have waited long enough, if you've waited at all.

We're over here now.

We decided to sit on the other side of center stage, to give others a chance to sit up front.   We ordered dessert, and asked for the check before the show started because Bro is a good bro.

Banana Bread Pudding with Coconut Drizzle

Strawberry Shortcake

This time, they didn't say "no photography" at all, so V took the photos seen below.

Rock Around Medley

Remember when we ordered the food?  It didn't actually arrive at our table until this song.  So I needed to wait a bit before taking those pictures.  Also, just because Bro asked for the check doesn't mean that it actually got there before the show.  Oh, well, we tried.

Jailhouse Rock

CSL4 asked who was from Hawai'i.  About 5 people.  Who was from out of town?  6.  Wait a minute, there were a lot more than 11 people in the audience.

Dancin' in the Street
Manny's feet!  They move so fast!  During the last verse, Armand went down an octave, and I about lost my mind, it was so low.

Leroy Brown
I don't think CSL4 is a dog.  I don't know what animal he sounds like, but it isn't a dog.

Satisfaction / Another Saturday Night / Cupid
Manny sang to Bro!!!

See?!?!

Moon River

CSL4 was getting confused between the words "Mahalo" and "Aloha".  I don't know why.  He knows words from multiple languages, but maybe it's because one of them means "hello" and "goodbye".

I Am Your Man
Even when I know it's coming, I get all excited about it.
Then Armand comes in with that low "Yeah", and whoo boy!
Afterward, Manny raised up his arm at Scott in praise, and I totally get it.  The man is still a tenor beast.

Rock the Boat

Commercials
Someone audibly questioned "the corporate devil", and CSL4 responded, "Yeah, that's what I said."

"As we have growed up."

Coconut!

Manny was OUT OF CONTROL during the 3rd Almond Joy.

NBC peacock flourish

This exchange happened after the Preparation H bit, between CSL4 and the drunk guy:
DG: You could do worse.
CSL4: Oh, really?  Please give me an example of how it could be worse.
Then something about giving somebody their royalties...it was weird.  I know that CSL4 likes dealing with the drunk people, though. The New Yorker in him comes out to play.

The exchange ended with something that "makes everyone better", and "Good to the Last Drop".

Stand By Me
Ain't Too Proud to Beg
CSL4 walked around and found Gina.  It was her 40th anniversary with husband Tom.  She danced with all of the guys, and CSL4 said, "Tom, you've got your hands full, buddy."

Macklemore

Grandmas

Carmen SanDiego
Well, now they only did this song for 58 years.
Manny's got the moves like Leonard

Encore
Up On The Roof / Wonderful World  (off mic)

There still wasn't a meet and greet, but the guys came out to talk to those of us that were still there.

Manny gave Bro and me big hugs, and met V and gave her a hug, too.  We apologized to him for not being able to see him when he was in Vegas, but he understood.

I introduced myself to Armand.  He said that he had heard of me, and I was, like, "What?"  I told him that I loved how he made some notes lower than I'm used to, and he said that sometimes it's just because he's tired, but at the next show, he was going to look at me when it was being done on purpose, and I could write it down.  I do not know what other stuff the guys tell the new guy about their fans, but it made me blush and smile.  Maybe you can't see the blush, but it's there.

We went back to the valet and at first I thought that we weren't going to get the car back because of whatever crazy trickery Bro had done with the valet guy who had already left for the night.  But we did after some explaining on his part, and he drove us home.

Thanks for two great shows, guys!
