Nirvana: Before, During and After Pella

Rockapella in Laguna
Show #5
Friday, August 26, 2016
Laguna Playhouse
Laguna Beach, CA

I couldn't wait another day to see the guys because I knew that Mitch was eagerly awaiting to see what I would make for him.  The last time I saw him, he asked, "What day are you coming?"  I had told him that I'd for sure see them on Saturday, maybe on Friday.  How could I possibly make him wait another day?  So I went ingredient shopping on Thursday, forgot to get one of the ingredients for something I had planned, and just baked until I ran out of time on Friday.

Jenn was bringing her future mother-in-law, Martina, to the show, and made dinner reservations at Nirvana, located down the street from the Playhouse, and invited me to join them.  I wanted to park a bit closer to the Playhouse because I had bags of goodies with me.  I tried to park across the street from Nirvana, but the guy wouldn't take anything other than exact change for the $15.00 fee.  The fee had just changed from $25.00, and he was waiting for the notification that it would decrease due to the time of day.  I didn't have exact change, though, so he recommended that I park at Wells Fargo, where they were charging $15.00, too.  They had change for me and gladly let me park there, which was about a half block away from Nirvana.

Jenn and I ordered a couple of small plates, and Martina ordered an entree.  I also ordered Force of Nature Cabernet because Vanguard.  The Mediterranean Truffle & Mushroom Hummus was quite good, and was served with veggies along with fried pita bread which tasted like french fries.  I also ordered the Chimichurri Filet Brochettes, which were also tasty.  I would have liked to have stayed longer, but the service was a little bit slow for those of us on a schedule.  I needed to find someone to take the goody bags to the house manager, so I left while Jenn took care of the bill.  Thanks for being so understanding, Jenn!
Hummus

Filet

Cheers!

I wasn't able to talk to the house manager because I arrived about 10 minutes before show time, and still needed to use the restroom.  When I came out of the restroom into the lobby, Scott was there, and said, "Hey, it's Fast Pass Sherry!"  This is the guys' nickname for me now.  I said Hi and smiled and tried to go to the theater, but Mitch spotted me and offered to take my bags.  "I know what that is!  I can take that off your hands."  I told him that he had a show to do first and needed to sing, and these would not help.  He didn't seem to care.  But I thought of how much the audience would not appreciate Mitch's non-clear throat, and told him he'd get his goodies later.

I found my seat, which was on the end of the first row, seat A9.  I couldn't put my bags next to me, because I knew that the guys would be using the stairs during the opening of the show, so I put them under my seat.

Sun Brothers

L-O-V-E
Mitch saw me and tried to look under my seat.  I'm glad I was wearing pants, that's all I'm saying.

Alamo
"They never came back." -- Mitch made a motion of slicing his throat.  Yeah, they died.  Spoiler Alert!  Sorry.

Mitch pointed at me and I shook my head, "No, not yet."

Rockapella

I don't usually hear the pitch pipe before the show starts here in Laguna, but this time I did, probably because I was at the end of the row.

Rock Around the Clock
Love that drum break before the second part of "Tell Me Something Good".

Jailhouse Rock
Audience members gasped when they heard Bryant's first low bass note on "San Antone".  Mitch was keeping the mic stand up by sheer will.  I guess The Force was with him.

Scott:  Who here has seen Rockapella before?
<Lots of cheers>
Scott:  That's more than usual here in Laguna Beach.

Scott, about JT:  He puts the Goon in "Laguna".

Dancing In The Streets

Just My Imagination / Imagine
Cal was struggling vocally just a bit at first, but it didn't take very much time for him to find his footing, which made me think, "Ohhh, there we go!"  The cute senior citizen couple next to me was holding hands.  So sweet.

Satisfaction / Cupid
"Try, try, try, try" -- Scott and Mitch gesture at each other.  Jeff pointed at me to sing along during  "Cupid".

Scott:  I grew up on Andy Williams.
<applause>
Someone in the audience:  Use the sweaters!
Scott:  Sweaters.  In L.A.  In August.  Show's over, we're gonna go get sweaters.

Moon River
The signal to end the jam session at the end of the song is when Calvin sings "Say it one more time."

I like how all of the guys brush off everything intelligent toward JT.  Ooh, they shot a video on Laguna Beach this morning.  Looking forward to seeing that.

Paper Doll
I can't wait until Cindy sees Mitch's lasso.

Blame It On The Boogie
Calvin heard me laughing and Scott and he shrugged at me.  Mitch is Michael Flatley, Lord of the Dance.  <cue Friends' Chandler: "His legs flail about as if independent from his body!">

<Intermission>

Ok, that loud, opening beat scared me.

Used Ta Be My Girl
Bryant moved his pelvis sideways while singing to My Girl.  Go, BV!  I can feel that bass beat over here on this side of the theater.

Commercials
Someone yelled "FOLGERS!"
Scott:  All right, now, this is not the interactive part of the show.
I love Jeff's intro to the Dr. Pepper jingle.

Scott, really, there are steps there.  You don't need to jump and worry me that you might possibly break something.

Susan loves coffee.  Her friend doesn't.  Susan is from Mission Viejo.
Scott:  We stay in Aliso Viejo.  I know how to say "Mission Viejo", but not Aliso Viejo, we didn't know if it's "Aliso Vajo".  (Phew, my mind went elsewhere and I was worried).

Stand By Me
Yay, she sang!

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
People in back of me were clapping on beats 1 and 3 and it drove me nuts.  Susan started to leave the stage on her own after the song.
Mitch (with CD in hand):  I can hold on to this if you don't want it.

Macklemore
I like that Bryant sings "REALLY" to the people in the audience that probably know the true lyric, like the young couple next to me.

Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego
Mitch gave up when Scott was clearly squatting way lower than him, and didn't finish the choreography for the verse.

Encore

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World
Upon hearing the audience clapping to the beat, Scott moved his pelvis to the beat.  Then Jeff snapped his fingers to signify to the audience that it was the preferred accompaniment.  For "Wonderful World", Scott heard the people singing along, but was able to quiet them with the beautiful sotto voce into his high note.  Finally.

Woman after the song was done, loudly:  Beautiful!

KP was excited that she and Nick, both Math Majors, were sitting next to each other when they sang "algebra".

Meet and Greet

Martina really enjoyed the show, and was able to meet all of the guys.  She asked me which one I was in love with: "I know you must be in love with one of them."  ONE?!?

Nick and KP said that they were sitting in front of one of Jeff's former roommates during the show, and he told a story to his companions.  One day, they were all talking about what they wanted to do with their careers.  (Scott said that the roommate is a drummer.  Wow.  That must have been some kind of living situation with the vocal percussionist and the drummer and whomever else was there).  The topic turned to Jeff, and they happened to be watching Spike Lee's "Do It A Capella" on the TV.  Jeff pointed to the TV, and said, "THAT.  I want to be in Rockapella."

WOW.  I mean, why have I never heard this story before?  WOW.  Jeff later said that this is one of the versions of the story.  I like this version.  Keep it.

I gave the guys their goody bags, which contained Thank You postcards from different attractions at Disneyland, along with a Fast Pass as a memento from Fast Pass Sherry.  Hey, as long as they include the word "Pass", I'm good with the nickname for as long as they can remember it.

Scott always reads the notes we give him before he leaves the Meet and Greet.  When he was done talking to folks, he set his goody bag down and read my note.  He's just so considerate that way, taking the time to see what we've written in order to comment if he has anything to say.  This is why I love him, even though he reads stuff that made me cry when I wrote it, and when I see him reading it, I almost cry again because they mean so much to me.  Ugh.  Yeah, I'm crying right now.  Shut up.  ANYWAY, he thanked me for his Fast Pass and said that he was going to use it while getting on the plane so he could be on first.

Scott meets Martina

Calvin said that the day at Disneyland was the best time he's had in a theme park, EVER.  What a sweetie. I told him "Happy Birthday!" as I gave him his goodies, which confused the folks around me.  I told them that his birthday was in March, but I was just now seeing him since then.
Calvin meets Martina

Jeff said that he saw me sitting in the front row, and thanked me for giggling at all of the jokes as if they were new.  Well, they're still funny to me.  When I gave him his bag, he said, "What's this?" and took a peek, gasped happily, and closed the bag to enjoy his treats later.  When Jenn introduced him to her future mother-in-law, Martina, he wondered, "Where's the guy?"  I told him that Marc's one of *those* guys that doesn't go to shows.  Somehow, JT understood.

Jeff understands guys

Mitch was very excited about his goodies, as I wrote earlier, so, of course, I made him wait the longest.  I gave them to him and Bryant at the same time.  Bryant was all excited about the labeling on the bag: one side had his initials, and the other his name.  He showed Mitch the side with the initials, then slowly turned it, saying, "BAM!!!" and there was his name.  I heart them lots.

Me and My Boys

Martina said that she now sees how I keep the guys happy.  Yes, yes I do.  I need some little way to give them a semblance of happiness when they've made me smile and laugh so much in my life.

No, I'm not crying right now.  Gotcha.

I told KP to text me once she got home because she actually drove down to Laguna by herself and I know that was a challenge for her.  Jenn, Martina and I walked back to our cars for our journeys home.  KP did text me.  I'm proud of her for doing that drive by herself.  I'm also proud of myself for making it home all of these times without falling asleep at the wheel.  Dude, I'm tired.  Tired, but blissful.

Ferdie at the Fourth

Rockapella in Laguna
Show #4
Sunday, August 21, 2016
Laguna Playhouse
Laguna Beach, CA

I was really tired and got to choir rehearsal late, but at least I made it to the church before Mass started.  Afterward, I made way back down to Laguna Beach.  Linda had originally planned to join me, but her kitty is sick, so she needed to stay home, and arranged for Ferdie to pick up her ticket at Will Call.  I parked in Lot 17 and texted the Posse that I was there.  I got on the trolley, and who should get on but KP herself, totally ignoring me.  So I hit her on the arm.  No, I didn't hit her hard, but it made her notice me!  She was with her friend Cindy, whom had taken her to her second Rockapella show, and was the teacher next door to her at school for a while.  When we arrived at the Playhouse, we relaxed on the upper tier of the Playhouse courtyard while we waited for our friends.  But they didn't get there that early, and we wanted to go inside and freshen up before sitting in our seats.  That's right, front row again!  This time I was in seat A-104.

With the little fake lighthouse on the hill

Weff arrived just before the first song.  Phew!

Sun Brothers

L-O-V-E
I love it when Scott plays his "trumpet" and the air from his lips makes his hair fly up.

Ooh, they were dressed in their Sunday white shirts and Scott was wearing my favorite tie!

Alamo
This song has been in my head for 24 hours.  This song has a train, and tritones during the "Toot toot"s, as well as the "choo choo", like in Rockapella's arrangement of Jailhouse Rock.

Ferdie's here!  YAY!

Rockapella

Rock Around the Clock
They sound much better today.  I don't know what was up with the sound mixing yesterday.  Got a smile from Mitch.

Jailhouse Rock
Oh, those mic stands are too far to keep JT in jail.

Scott:  "I recognize some friends down here."  That's us!!!

Dancing in the Streets
Great move, Cal!  Pitch pipe assist from Scott to get Mitch going.

Just My Imagination / Imagine
Jeff came back on to the stage and applauded Calvin after the song (he rests off stage for this one).  Scott's hair is all wonky.

Satisfaction / Cupid
Jeff Evs' favorite part is the audience participation.  (He does not agree with this statement).

Mitch:  Warriors fans, maybe next year.
Scott:  Probably next year.
Mitch: Probably.

Moon River
I wonder what Elliott would sound like singing the lead on this song.  It would be in a lower key, but I think his smooth voice would sound really nice.

Paper Doll
Jeff's facial expressions during the call and response with Bryant are hilarious.  He also kicks when Bryant sings "I'm through with all of them".  Mitch acts like he's riding a bicycle at the end, like they're the Dapper Dans or some such thing.  Wendy said that Mitch has Flirty Flirty Eyebrows.

Blame It On The Boogie
No collision today, but they were really close to it.  Hi, Bryant!

<Intermission>
Ferdie said that he was a little nervous because he didn't have time to pay for a parking permit at the lot.  I've not seen anyone giving out tickets, but I have seen patrols.  I don't know if they're checking, though.

Intermission Smiles

Used Ta Be My Girl
Calvin sang at Wendy.  She pointed at herself, like "Who? Me?"  Calvin nodded.
Mitch, after "Can't beat her cooking", sings "Yum Yuuuuum" while patting his belly.

Scott got applause after saying, "Prior to becoming the legendary vocal act we've become..."

Commercials
The tenors are having way too much fun up there.

Scott felt coffee vibes from Susan.  It was Wendy sending the vibes!  He's doing it wrong.

Susan is a consultant.  She could give consultation regarding a good cup of coffee.
Scott:  I hate coffee.

Stand By Me
Susan augmented the lyric a bit, instead of singing, "Oh I won't be afraid", she sang "I'm afraid."

Mitch took some very loud steps to the front of the stage before singing, "I know you want to leave me..."

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
OK, Susan was awesome.  She shared some shoulder action with Bryant, and she slapped Mitch's butt!  YES!!!

Macklemore
Mitch is a very old young person.

Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego
Scott motioned that there is still some air under his butt when he was squatting down.

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World (off mic)
Someone in the audience started to rustle their plastic bag, and it kept on going.  During the quietest part of the show.  Scott heard it, kind of looked around, saw me giggling, and smiled.  Then the stage lights started to shift and change colors (not a part of the show), and they were loud, too.  He looked at me again, and I felt like I was in church, giggling behind my hymnal so that the congregation wouldn't see me.  What made it more like church was the fact that Ferdie was sitting next to me, because he was one of the people with whom I sang and hid behind hymnals at St. James.

Meet and Greet
I mostly just took Paparazzi pictures of the guys talking to the Posse.  I wasn't able to get my camera out in time for Ferdie and Calvin's discussion, so they faked another one for me so I could take this shot.  Thanks, guys!  It looks so authentic!

As I was saying...

They were all getting excited about Disneyland, partly because it would be a Cheat Day from their diets (for Cal, Mitch and Bryant).   Bryant said that his meal plan was churro, turkey leg, churro, corn dog, churro.  He saw that I was taking candids, and proceeded to unbutton his shirt for the camera.  Yeah, because I didn't already think he was a manly man BEFORE that happened.  O.M.G.

I love Wendy's expression!

Wendy gave Jeff some brownies, which he had said he enjoyed from last week.  The look on his face was priceless, he was so excited.  He even asked me to take some pictures of him with his phone.  I'm amazed he trusted me enough to hand the phone to me, but I guess he figures I'm not going to do anything crazy in the 30 seconds I had it in my hand.  I love that he posted them on Facebook.

He's so excited!

Mitch asked where his goodies were, and was all appalled that JT got something when he actually made an order.  I informed him that I was bringing his goodies were coming next week, and that those were from Wendy.  I guess he isn't being as good about his diet as he portends to be.
Where's my stuff?!

Scott and I discussed the weirdness with all of the plastic rustling during the last song.  He figured that somebody really wanted to get their stuff together to leave.  I told him about Ferdie and me hiding behind hymnals in church.

Talking about the guys having a Cheat Day at DLR

We said goodbye to the guys, and to KP and Cindy.  Weff and I decided to eat at Rasta Tacos.  Ferdie was still worried about his car in the lot, and went there to pay.  Then he took the trolley and didn't get off where I told him to, and rode around for a while before he finally met us at Rasta Tacos.  I had the Surf n Turf (shrimp and carne asada) and it was quite yummy.  We all took the trolley back to our cars.  Look how cute we are on the trolley!

After saying goodbye, I decided to meet Glenndy at Disneyland, so I lounged with them and watched the magic picture at our booth.

Such a fun weekend of 4 shows!  I'm not going to be able to concentrate at work this week.

Mic Drop

Rockapella in Laguna
Show #3
Saturday, August 20, 2016 - 7:30 p.m.
Laguna Playhouse
Laguna, CA

After saying goodbye to the family, I waited for my friend Jennifer to arrive.  She was in the mood for some ice cream, and I am not the kind of person that objects to such notions.  KP and Nicole were eating at Romeo Cucina, and had eaten their appetizers at the gelato place next door already, so we didn't wait for them to finish their dinner.  We met up with them at the restaurant to say hi, and they told us about the flavors they tried at Dolce Gelato.  I ended up choosing the Strawberry Balsamic sorbet and the Mango sorbet.  They were both very good, but I preferred the Mango because, well, MANGO.

KP and Nicole joined us when they finished their dinner, and we all walked to the beach.  I saw a hat store and told JenJ that we could get hats for the show.  She didn't really want to do that, but they were cute hats.

No matter how many people are on a beach with me, I find some serenity by just staring at the ocean for a little while.  See the happy face?  That's due to a combination of being at the beach and seeing the Pella.

We walked back to the Playhouse and freshened up for the show in the Posse restroom, then headed for our seats in the front row.  We were all seated next to each other, A103-106.  It's Jen J's first Rockapella show!  Let's get to it!

Sun Brothers

L-O-V-E
Scott shook hands with us and High Fived the second row.  Love was made for me and Mitch. That's what I got from that song.

Alamo
KP likes hearing Scott say "Rock-a-pella".

Rockapella

Rock Around the Clock
What is up with Mitch's hair?  It was not like a faux mohawk earlier today.  He has not calmed down at all since this afternoon.

Jailhouse Rock
Choo Choo WHOOOO!  I love that tritone in the last verse: it sounds like a train whistle.  Calvin and I smiled at each other as Mitch almost ran into him.

Dancing in the Streets
...and JT thrusted 3.5 times.

Just My Imagination
Mitch tried to imitate Scott by sauntering with his microphone stand, then dropped the mic.  BV: "That's the move right there!  Watch the mic this time."
Hi, Bryant!  Scott cleared his throat in time with the music right before his Imagine solo.

Satisfaction
Scott got on Thacher Island.  What is he doing there?  During Another Saturday Night, Jeff gestures for Mitch to get out of town.

Moon River
I really like this song at this tempo.

Scott:  Bryant is a true Basso Profundo
Scott:  Jeff has been with Rockapella for over 20 years.  He's started at 5 years old.
Jeff showed how tall he was at 5 years old, then proceeded to pat his imaginary 5 year old's head.
When Scott mentioned records, Calvin and Bryant made motions of an LP being placed on the turn table, putting the needle on the record, and then Mitch understood and they all made DJ motions.

Paper Doll
Scott is like a rag doll.  Got a smile from Bryant.  Mitch covered his eyes so he wouldn't see or be Flirty Flirty Eyes.

Blame It On The Boogie
During Bryant's solo, he did the Mission Impossible theme and imitated a gun with his hand. I saw this next move coming, and said, "Oh no, oh no..." and Calvin and Mitch ran into each other.

KP said that Mitch is like a Tasmanian Devil up there.

<rant begins> The lady singing behind me was driving me nuts during the more popular songs.  Lady, I did NOT pay to hear your voice singing during this show. I appreciate that you like the music, but please keep your singing to yourself.  This is a capella.  I'd like to hear their voices and their harmonies, not whatever the hell you want to share.  Cheer all you want, but please do not sing during this show.  That goes for the rest of you out there, too.  I love singing along with them when I'm listening to them at home or in my car.  I mouth the words during the show.  But I do not want others to hear my voice (and I sing in tune and in harmony, thankyouverymuch).  I want the audience to enjoy what I'm enjoying...these very talented guys sharing their music.  This is the problem with Pella doing covers of songs...when everyone knows it, they tend to sing along, which is fine when we're being ASKED to do so.  I don't recall Mitch and Calvin asking us to sing along for the rest of the damn show.  Because they didn't WANT us to do that.  UGH.  <rant ends>

<Intermission>

Used Ta Be My Girl
Calvin and Bryant sang to Nicole!

Commercials
Mitch's reaction to Scott's Ringworm solo is hilarious.  JT did the NBC Peacock flourish after Ringworm, too.  I like how Mitch goes into Superman stance when Scott calls them the "Heroes of Capitalism".

Scott felt a connection with Jane from Georgia.  She was wearing a hat like the cute ones we saw in the store.  See?  We should have bought those hats.  She was also wearing just a cover-up over her bikini, and she was drunk, almost falling as she tripped up on to the stage with Scott.  Oh, dear.  When Scott told her that he felt the vibe and thought it was telling him that Jane sings fantastically.  Her response:  "Really?  Do you play Pokemon?"  Um, WHAT?!  Oh, yeah, she was drunk.

Stand By Me
She did not sing about Pikachu.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg
Bryant took Jane's hat and wore it.  Afterward, Mitch said, "I need some of what you've been drinking."

Macklemore

DO IT ROCKAPELLA!!!!
Scott pointed to us:  "You know what it is."

Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego?
Bryant and I shimmied at each other, which made him laugh.

Scott:  Come back, tell your friends, bring your friends..or stay away for as long as you want.

Encore

Up On The Roof / Wonderful World  (off mic)
OMG, I can't even with the other people singing.

Meet and Greet

JenJ didn't really want to meet the guys because she didn't think she had anything to say to them that was meaningful.  I made her meet Bryant and take a picture with him anyway.

Bryant Sandwich with the Roomies

Nicole told JenJ that the easier way to talk to them is to buy their CD and have them sign it, so JenJ decided to do so, since she liked the music.  She bought a Motown and More CD.  I continued to introduce her to the guys, but she didn't want to be in the pictures, so thank you, JenJ, for taking these!

I love Calvin's hugs!

When I introduced JenJ to Scott, I told him that she, Jenny and I all attended UCI together.  Scott didn't realize that Jenny and I had gone to college together.  I told him that I not only have known Jenny since I was six years old, yes, we also went to college together.

As we were hanging out and talking to the guys, I turned to Mitch, and said, "Mitch!"  He looked at me.  "The microphone!  Be careful!" and looked at JT.  JT kind of shrugged, like, "Yeah, he's like that."  Mitch said that he knows that he needs to calm down a little bit because he's not going to have much of a paycheck if he breaks stuff.  I mean, I love his energy, I just think he needs to watch out for stuff.

Ah, what a fun-filled day.  We all took the trolley and JenJ and I exited at Lot 17.  My car was all the way around the other side of the school, but the area was well-lit, so I was OK.  My feet were hurting from all of the walking in my sandals, but I was happy.  Happy and tired.  Apologies to y'all for the delayed posts!
