Enjoy the Silence of No Narration

DCI West
Stanford Stadium
Palo Alto, CA
Saturday, June 20, 2015

I met up with Bro at his house on Thursday night, and he drove us all (V, Mr. B, Miss O and me) up to V's parents house in Oakley, CA on Friday.  I spent most of the ride organizing a show that will be taking place at my house in July.  We spent the rest of that day enjoying some family time by going swimming and sitting in the spa.  At one point, Bro accessed a periscope feed of one of the awards ceremony at the drum corps competition in Fresno.  I think it would be cool to watch drum corps while swimming or sitting in a spa.  The drum corps would be live, of course.  That would be a big swimming pool at the top of the stands, so maybe that's not very feasible, but I can dream.  Also, one would get really prune-y skin from being in the water for the length of time that we watch drum corps shows.

On Saturday, we all went to the flea market and the kids got some Pokemon cards.  Then Bro and I went to Palo Alto to start our drum corps competition season.  Bro had bought tickets that included a BBQ with the Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard alumni, which was pretty tasty.  I didn't really want to wear a wristband with balloons on it, and the guy marked up my arm when he put an x on my wristband, but that's OK.  During the BBQ. we were treated to BD Alumni playing some music, including "Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor".  The current BD members also played part of their show for us.  We had heard them during their stadium run-through while we were shopping earlier in the day, and they sound great, of course.  Then the current SCV members played all of the music from their show, which made us very happy.  They sound amazing.  We were also treated to the new arrangement of "Send In The Clowns".  They now take it at a quicker pace, and Bro says it's more like their original show and brings forth more emotion.

I bought a Blue Knights shirt because with their signature dots and a heart in the corner.  I was disappointed last year when they didn't have a shirt with the dots, so I made sure to buy one this year.  I also bought a 2013 SCV Les Miz CD, as well as a Blu-Ray of their Scheherazade 2014 tour.

Our seats were in Row CC, seats 4-5, which were on the right 45 yard line and one row below the top row.  Brandt Crocker was the announcer.  Yay!
Jumbotron

The Freelancers Alumni Corps played as a warm-up to the competition, playing "Home", "Tiger of San Pedro", "Diego's Goodbye", and "The Shadow".  I asked Bro if it was a "Kung Fu Panda" show, because of the tiger.  But I didn't know if any of the characters names are "Diego".  APPARENTLY, I just don't know what I'm talking about, because Tiger has nothing to do with the movie, and it all sounded nothing like the music in it.  "Diego's Goodbye" is from "Mask of Zorro".

The Star-Spangled Banner was beautifully played by the Blue Devils trumpet ensemble.  I love when the national anthem is played live at these events.

GOLDEN EMPIRE
Repertoire: "The Color of Crime" -- The Area is Secure by C. Beck; Pinch of a Finger by C. Beck; Perfect Day for a Murder by C. Beck;  Feeling Good by A. Newley; Dreamsville by H. Mancini; The Damburger Incident by C. Beck; Dragalong Dreyfus by C. Beck; Chasing Yuri by C. Beck; Pink Panther by H. Mancini

Their screens are a pretty dark blue.  Is the CG wearing masks?  Or is that face paint/make-up?  Their warm-up is a little bit of Mancini's Pink Panther, which is cute. Those purple sunset-like flags look familiar.  There is a pedestal with a pink diamond, which I guess is the "color" in the title.  The only narration they used was a woman's voice saying "Access Granted" when they take the diamond.  I'm OK with that.  They form a diamond.  Not like on playing cards, but like a jewel.  Bro likes the zipper formation at the end, which I did not see.  I don't think the show is finished yet.

BLUE DEVILS B
Repertoire: "Prismatic" -- I. Beam of Light: -- Luminosity by J. Whitbourn; The Analog Kid  by G. Lee, A. Lifeson & N. Peart; II. Refraction -- "Now You See Me" by B. Tyler; You Know Where to Find Me by I. Heap; III. Brilliance -- I Am The Doctor by M. Gold

Their props are reflective prisms.  I was worried that someone would jump up and poke themselves in the eye, the tips look so sharp.  The CG wears neon color-blocked uniforms.  I like that contra feature.  Please straighten the lines of your prism formation.

Dear lady 2 rows in front of us:  If you're going to knit during the show, please don't examine your blanket for all of us to see while the show is playing.  It blocks our view of the field.  I know you're here for SCV, but that's rude.

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD CADETS
Repertoire:  "On Cloud Nine" -- Act 1: "Awakening" -- 'Life' from "Prometheus" by H. Gregson-Williams; Act 2: "Finding Your Voice" -- 'The Girl with the Plums' from "Perfume" by R. Heil, J. Kilmek & B.T. Twyker; Act 3: "On Cloud Nine" -- Title track from "Big Hero 6"  by H. Jackman

They are still using their drums from last year's "The Road Not Taken" show.  I really like the high brass sound.  The percussion section is doing well, too.  CG doesn't seem finished with the last part of the show, as they weren't really doing anything but standing there.  Those white/transparent big flags are pretty.  Bro thinks the kids might want to watch this show because they play a lot of "Big Hero 6".

BLUE DEVILS C
Repertoire: "The Beatles" -- Magical Mystery Tour; Can't Buy Me Love; Yesterday; Eleanor Rigby; Drive My Car; Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band all by J. Lennon and P. McCartney

The percussion section is pretty loud and impressive for corps made up of such young people.  The CG wears majorette outfits, and they know how to pose well, like all BD CG gals do.
Blue Devils C color guard

Stanford Stadium staff is telling people to go to their seats because they don't want people to stand in the vomitories, but it's the middle of the show, and they're all trying not to disturb the other spectators.  Sigh.

<INTERMISSION>

MANDARINS
Repertoire: "Resurrection" -- I. The Awakening; II. Warrior; III. The Dynasty of the Emperor; IV. Forever In Stone all from "Resurrection" by K. Poulan, S. Womack & M. Hunter

No narration!  YAY!  Their drums have Chinese characters on them, which translate to "Resurrection".   Nice brass sound.  Nice percussion feature with some taiko, although you know me, I could always use more.  :)  So, is the CG actually playing those instruments, or are they only pretending to play?  I wonder how that will look when the CG gets their uniforms.  Perhaps they'll be debuting their uniforms at the Moonlight Classic.  They didn't use those creepy dead doll things that were situated backfield, so maybe they'll have more to do with the show later in the season.

PACIFIC CREST
The CG now has their uniforms, and they are a pretty purple color, which changes to red when they make their skirts.  The ballad soloist needs more love.  I want to watch that percussion feature more closely.  They seem to be beating the hell out of those drums.
Start of "Catalyst"

BLUE KNIGHTS
Repertoire: "Because..." -- Because by J. Lennon & P. McCartney; Rush by J. Bocook, K. Shah & M. Jackson; Apres Moi by R. Spektor; I'm Alive by A. Watts; Fly to Paradise by E. Whitacre

Their screens are semi-circles, and they're quite effective in this show because you can't see what they're doing behind them, even from our height in the stands.  They are also reflective, so you see the grass in the reflection, which is a cool effect.  They bring out the flags from behind the screens, which was a beautiful way to present them.  I love that the flags have dots on them!  I don't like the CG uniform color, though.  I also love the accented beat that they use throughout the show, like daDUM daDUM daDUM.  The brass sound is absolutely gorgeous.  I like the mellophone solo, and I do like it when the trumpet joins in for the duet, but it would be much nicer if the volume was more balanced.  Cool black/white "s" things that they spin hypnotically.  Cool body movements, too, as BK does.  My reaction:  "Aaaaaahhh!"  The show is still unfinished, as I didn't cry like Bro predicted I would.  I have heard the music, though, because I caught a bit of their rehearsal at my alma mater (Arcadia High School) earlier in the week.  I'm really looking forward to seeing the full show.

PHANTOM REGIMENT
Repertoire: "City of Light" -- I Love Paris by C. Porter; Horoscope by C. Lambert; Clair de Lune by C. Debussy; An American in Paris by G. Gershwin; Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony) by C. Saint-Saens

They start their show in the formation of the Eiffel Tower.  Bro had to tell me what it was because I was being blind or something.  They also form their rectangular Phregiment symbol at one point.  The gold color works for the "Clair de Lune" piece.  Interesting transformation to the cross formation.  Such cute hats/glasses/gloves at the beginning.  I could do with less synthesizer and piano.  I like the contra ensemble during the Gershwin, such fun.  Yay -- cancan!

SANTA CLARA VANGUARD
Repertoire:  "The Spark of Invention"  --  Invention in A Minor by J.S. Bach; Virus Attack by A. Bhatia, Pure Imagination by L. Bricusse & A. Newley; Piano Concerto by J. Corigliano

Wow, that was AWESOME.  Horns, percussion, great show!  I love the musical arrangements.  You could hear a pin drop during the first minute of (almost) silent drill (piano and marimbas only).  Love that trumpet ensemble during the Bach, leading to full corps doing the counterpoint.  The percussion feature includes the CG holding the drums for the drummers, and eventually holding them with their feet.  Formations of a coil and Jacob's Ladder, as well as a bird to represent Tesla's friendship with a pigeon.  SCV's rendition of "Pure Imagination" might actually make me like that song, because there's not too much of it.  They're still using their Scheherazade drums, but the colors still match, os that's OK.  Awesome drill, music, everything.  I LOVE THIS SHOW!  The audience gave them a standing ovation, deservedly so.

BLUE DEVILS
Repertoire: "Ink" -- Dark Forest by D. Glyde; Sweeney Todd by S. Sondheim; The Giant Attack by S. Sondheim; The Mad Hatter's Tea Party by G. Goodwin;  I Like You by GOT7; Children Will Listen by S. Sondheim; Last Midnight by S. Sondheim

More white props, lots of them.  One of the sets of props looks like steps up to a lifeguard station to me.  The show starts with the snare drummers sitting on top of them.  At one point, the CG is spinning the rifles from them, and the crowd liked the effect with all of the different levels of rifles.  I need to look out for that at the next show because I was concentrating on something else.  Wow, those trumpets.  That note was really high, trumpet soloist!  I love the pink on the right arm, especially when the brass is facing right, so that you can see it well.  They form the word "INK".  The CG lead plays all of the different female lead characters, like Snow White, Cinderella, Alice, and Little Red Riding Hood.  During the final drill, someone marched onto the prop and back on the field in order to keep the formation, but the other people went around it.  I like the music from this show, but it's a bit disjointed.

Sing It On
Season 1, Episode 6
Northeast Semifinals

  • BONR festival: Best of Northeastern Regional a capella showcase takes place.  Melodores, Nor Easters, and All Night Yahtzee are on the schedule.
  • The emcee embarrassingly falls down while trying to exit the stage, which gets more response than the Nor'Easters' set.  Uh oh.
  • It's Spring Break time, and No Comment is going to recharge before submitting their Wild Card video.  They get sunburned because they don't know what sun is like.
  • Nor'Easters analyze away, and decide to change their set for competition, which is freaking out the soloist.
  • No Comment meets All Night Yahtzee, and Michael is surprised that they're attractive.  He wants to have a Bang Off, which isn't as dirty as it sounds.
  • It's pedicure time for the Nor'Easters, and it's Isaac's first.  Samantha is still freaking out about a solo that she's never done before, and now has to do at Semis.
  • Northeast Semifinals take place at Symphony Hall in Boston.  I have good memories of that place.  :)
  • Nor'Easters are up first, and their anxiety is high.  They are not happy about their placement in the show order.  Jessie's hand is shaking, and it's distracting other people in the group.  At least Samantha got through her solo.
  • The Nor'Easters only get second place, so they don't get to go to Finals unless they get in via wild card.  They lose to the group they just beat in quarterfinals, the Vassar Devils.
  • So far, there are 2 groups that we are following that are hoping for the wild card entry.  This should be interesting.

Let's Get It Started

So Cal Drum Corps Sneak Preview
Saturday, June 13, 2015
Glen A. Wilson High School
Hacienda Heights, CA

Drum Corps Season 2015 is about to start!  I attended the So Cal Drum Corps Sneak Preview with Bro because we can't possibly wait another week until we see our first show at Stanford.

For those new to my blog, allow me to introduce myself.  I've been a drum corps fan since the days that it was televised on Thanksgiving weekend over 20 years ago.  Bro and I would watch Finals 3 months after they actually happened.  Bro and I have been precision marching fans since our years of growing up in Arcadia, the home of the famed Arcadia Apache Marching Band.  Neither one of us marched in that band, as we were both violinists, and a violin bow is a bit dangerous with which to march.  I marched in my junior high school drill team for two years.  He and I are hard core fans, and we like to bring new people in and get them hooked (I do this with Rockapella, too, hence the name of this blog).  Bro and I have been attending DCI Finals since 1999, so we're quite experienced audience members.  My blog posts include pre- and post- show activities for posterity. I will only post the repertoire of corps if that is my first time seeing them that season.

Let's get it started!

Bro and I arrived after the food trucks opened, but early enough to beat the crowds.  We ordered burgers from Austyn's.  The burger itself was tasty (their meat is made from grass-fed cattle), but the fries needed more salt.  I didn't see salt packets at the truck, but I also wasn't looking for them.  Bro and I finished before the magician got to our table.  Don't get me wrong:  I like magicians.  I like when they perform crazy stuff like having you sign a playing card, and finding it inside an orange.  We just weren't in the mood.  So we watched the Impulse drum line warm up.  Bro noticed that a couple of the cymbal players were not even in step during their stand still, which worried me.  I am not a fan of people being out of step, especially percussion players.  You ARE the beat, people.  Please learn to walk to it.

We watched the end of the magician's stage show as we waited for Prota, a Taiko drum ensemble.  This made me smile.  I love Taiko!  I love the sound of the drums, and I love the balletic movements of the drummers arms.  I would have volunteered to learn to play, but a) I was being shy, and b) I didn't want to embarrass Bro with my non-drummer-ness.

We walked into the stadium with our hand stamps.  I honestly don't know why they didn't let me keep part of my ticket.  It was perforated.  You have to pay extra for that.  It's just silly not to let me walk away with my souvenir, especially because there was no program.

Ryan Turner, the voice of So Cal drum corps, was our announcer, which made me happy.  He won't remember me, but I was one of the people that held the banner for the Pasadena Honor Band in the Rose Parade, for which he was the drum major.  Also, he knows how to pronounce the names of shows and stuff.  He interviewed the corps directors before each show.

Since this was a sneak preview, I didn't expect to see full shows from anyone.

INCOGNITO
Repertoire: "Planet Incognito": World of Incognitians by T. Nguyen; Mars (from The Planets) by G. Holst; Jupiter (from The Planets) by G. Holst

Incognito was on a hiatus for several years, so it's good to see them back, although I miss their masks.  Their drum cadence is syncopated, which worried us, especially Bro, because it's not easy to march to syncopated beats, and um, it's not like they're awesome at the marching anyway.   They sound better than I've ever heard them before.  We only heard Mars, and maybe some of the original work by corps director Nguyen.

IMPULSE
Repertoire:  "Interpolation": Anna's Theme by J. Corigliano; The Monastery Gregorian chant; The Gypsy Song (composer unknown)

Oh, maybe that's why their tour shirt has a graph/Spirograph design on it!  Interpolation!  People were commenting that they weren't wearing their caps.  Maybe they're still getting fitted.  Or they want to save them for the judges.  I don't know, but the drum major (DM) had one.  Yay, Red Violin!  I love that music.  Nice euphonium solo during that piece, and that is their strongest song at the moment.

GOLD
Repertoire: "Pop Star" (musical selections not available)

Corps director Donald Flaherty said that their repertoire is basically a rock opera of a Britney Spears tour.  They did one selection for us, "Toxic".  Different sections in the corps wear different uniforms.  To me, this not a definition of "uniform", but that's because I'm picky and I don't like to be distracted by all of that stuff.  Which I was.  I was quite disappointed.  So was Bro.  They have a tall stage for their electric guitar and bass guitar and drum kit.  Those electronic instruments were so loud that they drowned out the corps proper, and I DO NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL.  It was way too loud, which made me feel like I was the Huey Lewis character in "Back To The Future".  Bro thought that the arrangement of "Toxic" was like listening to a bad elementary school band.  Yikes!  I thought that the girl in the red lingerie was going to sing, but she was using her saber handle with the microphone on the mic stand.  Please, please tell me that their "uniforms" are just temporary, because at least that would make me feel a little better.  I don't want to have to cringe when I see this show multiple times this summer, because I usually really like this corps.  Sorry, Gold.  If the rest of the show is like this, I'll be in line for a hot dog during your performances.

Don't get me wrong.  I like to be hopeful at the beginning of the season, and not as critical as this.  But at least they have a lot of time to change it up.  Not that they'll read this.  Or care.

PACIFIC CREST
Repertoire: "Catalyst" -- Scythian Suite by S. Prokofiev; Liberi Fatali (from Final Fantasy) by N. Uetmatsu; Enjoy the Silence  by M. Gore of Depeche Mode, based on Eric Whitacre's choral arrangement; Angels in the Architecture by F. Tichelli

Their new uniforms are quite nice, much better than the last incarnation.  I like them, but I agree with Bro that they need more white on the front so that they can have more contrast when they do their cool spin moves.  Very energetic starting from the beginning.  I like it!  The color guard (CG) tails expand to skirts.  Pretty.  I think those black tops are going to change, though, because none of them are the same.  Nice big, brass sound!  I like the dark feel of their music.  Bro misses having a ballad that he can hum.  I guess he doesn't know the Depeche Mode song, or he doesn't like it.

Encore -- Pacific Crest

PC played my very favorite hymn, "Melita", otherwise known as the US Navy hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save".  Brass caption head Seth is also one of the band directors at Arcadia HS, and he uses the hymn as a warm up for them, too.  Yup, my favorite band, playing my favorite hymn.  I'm so lucky!  Then PC does it now, too?  Heaven.

They also played their show closer at stand still.  Actually, I think it was at stand still during today's show, too.  Can't give it all away quite yet!

They finished with their corps song, the Franz Biebl "Ave Maria", another piece that I adore.  Sigh.

The drum corps season is starting!  Whoo HOOOOO!  I'm looking forward to seeing these shows develop in these weeks leading up to Finals.

Good luck to all of the corps this season, and safe travels!  See you at the cinema on Wednesday!

The Park Is Open

22 years ago, "Jurassic Park" was released on the big screen, and I saw it in the theater at least 3 times.  I remember how many moments in the film affected me and my love for movies:  John Williams' brilliant score, the awe of seeing those amazingly life-like dinosaurs, and the thrill of all of the different human vs. dinosaur scenes have made this one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

So, of course, as I'm typing my thoughts on "Jurassic World", I'm watching the Jurassic Park marathon on USA.  :)

I went to the movie with Glendy, Linda and Mox.  We had reserved seats, and somebody was already sitting in them when we arrived.  They wouldn't move or show us their tickets. We got the usher involved, and they still wouldn't move.  Then the usher went to get the manager, but came back by himself and told the people to get out of our damn seats.  OK, I don't know what he actually said, but that's the way I thought it in my head.  Here's a tip for y'all that sneak into movies:  DO NOT PICK THE THEATER THAT HAS RESERVED SEATING, ESPECIALLY ON OPENING WEEKEND OF A BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE.  Idiots.  OK, I'm done shouting.  For now.

On with the fun stuff!

  • Loved the homages to the original film, such as certain shots that were the same, the t-shirt, the jeeps, the old visitor's center...loved it all.  (I noticed today while watching JP that the tag number on the jeep is the same one as the jeep in JW -- 029).  I just really love consistency!
  • My heart broke in that scene in the same field where Dr. Grant first sees the brachiosaurus.  TEARS.  But not the same kind as in JP.
  • Those dinosaurs are huge.  The people aren't afraid to be sitting so close to that one in the water?  Goodness, me.  I mean, that mosasaurus ate a frickin' great white shark like it was a goldfish!  Wait.  Where is JW getting all of these great whites to feed her every day?
  • "Did you ever wonder why there was a job opening?"
  • I was one of the people that figured what breeds the hybrid dinosaur must have come from...but it still didn't prepare me for the communication bit between the dinos.
  • The gyrosphere vehicle looks damn cool.  I want to ride in one, but nowhere near dinosaurs, please.  Especially ones with very sharp, big teeth.
  • Speaking of teeth:  the dinosaurs in this film had some, um, debris in them after using them, not like the clean-teethed ones in JP.
  • "Why did you have to make it so personal?"
  • Why does Chris Pratt make me love him so much?  He's just awesome.
  • Love the way that Bryce Dallas Howard's character gets ready for her adventure.
  • I liked the kids, too.  Why is it that both sets of kids in JP and JW have parents that are going through a divorce?  Is that necessary?
  • OK, the theme park site is pretty cool:  http://www.jurassicworld.com/
  • Glad that we got to see the aviary.
  • Gentle Giants petting zoo with baby dinos.  Kids riding baby dinos.  Cuteness.
  • I like how the dilophosaurus hologram tricked the velociraptor, like Lexie's reflection in the stainless steel of the kitchen furniture in JP.
  • Wait.  That was Jimmy Buffett carrying the margaritas?
  • "We need more teeth."
  • I was so tense throughout this movie that I felt like I needed a massage.

I'm going to be seeing this movie at least a couple more times in the theater.  I want to see it in 3D.  Maybe IMAX, because you know, the dinosaurs aren't big enough.  ;)

"Save Me"  (theme from Smallville) by Remy Zero

Sing It On 1.5

Sing It On
Season 1, Episode 5
Midwest Semifinals

  • Cows!
  • Robbie, an alumnus of No Comment is consulting for them now, and we're talking dynamics today.  He thinks they're afraid of getting soft.
  • Isaac of the Nor'Easters is getting a tattoo with best friend Samantha.  Dude, stop moving when the guy tells you to look one way!  Kinda important.  Samantha has a poem etched into her.  I mean, of course it's going to hurt if you're going to put all of those words on your ribcage!
  • Michael of All Night Yahtzee is really upset that they didn't come in first at quarterfinals, and is still pissed off about Christian and Andie being a couple.   Or, as one judge said, they didn't have a ballad!!! If you do the ballad well, people won't be bored.  You just need to make it interesting.  Especially because it would really show off your vocal skills instead of being all showy.  Michael is so blinded by being pissed off that Andie is dating someone in the group that he thinks she is blinded by that.  Dude, there are other people that think you need the ballad, too.
  • No Comment wants to cut out 2 songs and have a longer ballad so that they don't run over time again.  Ooh, and it's "I'm Gonna Be" by the Proclaimers, which is a pretty cool idea.
  • Michael talks to Andie about her dating Christian.  You know, because that's his effing business.  The clue here is Michael saying "We agreed..." then said, "I decided that there would be no dating within the group."  So...pretty much...it was all him. "Ultimately, I'm glad she's happy."  RIGHT.  UGH.
  • Scott of No Comment takes James and Dirk for their first spray tans.  I'm having visions of Ross from "Friends" at the tanning place.  "I feel really exposed right now."  OMG, why can't they just go to a booth and do that?!  "Looking at each other naked is going to be acaward."  HA!
  • If your voices are thrashed from all of the rehearsals, you should really, really rest, No Comment.  Hum a little or something while doing choreo.  Seriously, no competition is worth ruining your cords.    Yeah, so a party bus is supposed to help matters?  Kids. I guess they were pretty calm this time, though.
  • Only the first place group at Semifinals advances to Finals.  No Comment is up against the Huskie Hunks again, as well as Voices In Your Head, the Stereotypes, and Fundamentally Sound.
  • Micah's mom and grandma are there to surprise her, and I hope she does well with her solo.
  • Pre-show rituals are shown, and they all seem to be mostly chanting.
  • Micah nails her solo!  YAY!
  • Whoa.  Fundamentally Sound, the all-male group is doing the same opening song as No Comment, and that key is high!
  • Aw, No Comment comes in 3rd, and Fundamentally Sound beats them.  1st goes to Voices In Your Head, the monstrous 18-member co-ed group.   No Comment is eligible for the wild card slot, so let's see what happens!

Sing It On 1.4

Sing It On
Season 1, Episode 4
ICCA South Regional Quarterfinals

  • We start at FSU today, with Michael happy that the members of All-Night Yahtzee love each other, but doesn't want them to love each other too much, especially Christian and Andie.
  • Uh-oh, she used air quotes for "innovative".
  • Why are we back with the Nor'easters if we're doing the South quarters right now?
  • Ty, an accomplished choreographer, and a former member of the group, is working with Nor'easters as a consultant.
  • AcaBelles sound good, and Michael's best friend, Amanda, is looking forward to competing against him.
  • Dani is having a special session with the two guys in the group that need the most help with the choreography, Daniel and Christian.  "It was on the way to being good."
  • No Comment is at a firehouse to raise funds for their next party bus.  They seem to not be as amused by "Bang Bang" as their usual audience.
  • Brittany is in a bass-off with Michael, and she's great.  Michael thinks the Acabelles aren't as good because their sound can't round out the whole chord like a group with a male bass.  While I tend to like the male bass sound more, I don't think that they're necessarily better because of that.  I think it's a different approach, and if you're a group with a male bass but your harmonies don't gel, then no, you're not better.  What's cool about an all-female group for me is that the harmonies are even tighter because the notes in their chords are so close together that they can create a different overtone.  (And to be truthful, Michael's being such a jerk that he's making me like girl groups more than I did before today).
  • All-Night Yahtzee has a preview for their fans, and welcome critique.  So they're not *required* to do a ballad?  Interesting.
  • I do agree with Michael that All Night Yahtzee may be messing with their voices on that party bus.  But I'm happy that he's pissed off about Christian and Andie going public.  Did they know about his rules?  Because it seems like they don't care.  "I'm kinda nervous about being an aca couple because Michael hates love."  HA!
  • Acaphiliacs are also co-ed at FSU, but of course Michael thinks Yahtzee is better.
  • I think Amanda rocked it with the Acabelles, but whatever with that audience.
  • OMG, the guys announcing the groups remind me of the guys in "Pitch Perfect" emceeing at auditions.
  • Yahtzee gets a standing ovation, which makes Michael's head grow bigger.
  • All Night Yahtzee wins for choreography.  Yay, Dani!
  • Aw, AcaBelles get 3rd, so they don't get to go to Semis.
  • All Night Yahtzee gets 2nd place, which pisses off Michael. So he's a sore loser, too.  Winning!
Next time:  Tattoos!

Sing It On 1.3

Sing It On
Season One
Episode 3: Northeast Quarterfinals

  • Uh oh.  Eric's having a hard time in Nor'easters rehearsal, and he's cut.  Poor Eric.
  • Ladies of Pitch, Please! are sick and breathing on each other.  Great.
  • I was afraid that the song from "Frozen" was going to be in No Comment's set, but phew!  It was only a karaoke session.
  • Ooh, aca-drama!  A couple from All-Night Yahtzee broke up, and as revenge, she formed the Acabelles, their rivals.  But I'm a shipper, so I want these two  to get together, partly because I want to see Michael freak out
  • Northeast Quarterfinals take place at MIT.
  • The Nor'easters get a standing ovation.
  • Callie of Pitch, Please! is freaking out that she has a hole in her jumpsuit, but someone sews her up, and she's OK, but nervous because she's still sick.  They sound OK, but I don't think it's great.
  • The Vassar Devils are small, but they have a nice, full sound.
  • Pitch, Please!  does not move on to Semis.  But Nor'easters and Vassar Devils do, with Nor'easters winning the evening.
All caught up now!  Next time:  South Quarterfinals.

Sing It On 1.2

Sing It On
Season 1
Episode 2: Midwest Quarterfinals

  • No Comment auditions for the solo in their closer.
  • The Nor'Easters goes to an a cappella party by all-female group Pitch Please!, "born out of the girls that didn't make it into the Nor'Easters".  Not nice, dude.  I've decided that I don't like him.
  • Ooh, Aca Battle!  Oh, they actually get a chance to practice their arrangements (to Britney Spears' "Toxic") first.
  • Pitch Please does sexy choreography throughout their song, more than the Nor'Easters, but the Nor'Easters have a better arrangement, and they win.
  • Meanwhile, Michael of All-Night Yahtzee feels badly about all of the tension that he cause during the audition bargaining process, and puts together a scavenger hunt.  he didn't make it a fair game, though, so yeah, I'm not much liking Michael either.
  • No Comment's Jessica is focusing too much on choreo instead of getting the music right, and Micah is unhappy.  I would be, too, especially when she wants an additional song.
  • Uh oh.  No Comment is being really loud on the party bus, and one of the gals doesn't know why their group is called "No Comment"..
  • Top 2 from Midwest Quarters go to Semifinals.
  • That vocal percussionist is outstanding, but I don't know which group he was from.
  • Is Micah a human metronome AND a human pitch pipe?  Is she also a one-woman band?
  • "Penalization" is a big word.
  • The Huskie Hunks and No Comment advance to Semis.  I mean, of course, No Comment makes it.  Why would we be focusing on them so much if not?  I wonder if the other groups were being followed, or just the ones they predicted would go to Finals.

Sing It On 1.1

Sing It On
Season 1
Episode 1: Auditions

How can I not blog about a new reality series about a cappella competition?  Especially when I'm almost done reading "Pitch Perfect", the book upon which the movies were based!  The new series (and the book) is about the International Championship of Collegiate of A Cappella competition.  The competition has already taken place in real life, and I'm playing catch-up today.  Here we go!

  • Really? The Nor'Easters (of Northeastern University) hold 24 hours of auditions?  That's too much, dude.  Aw, they want to find more best friends.
  • All-Night Yahtzee (of Florida State University) is rivals with the Acabelles.  Michael (of ANY) seems to be kind of a diva.
  • Acabelles sound really good in the "Royals" video that went viral on youtube.
  • No Comment (of University of Illinois) is a family that doesn't sleep together.
  • Ooh, that "secret preference" is interesting.  So is that bartering thing.  I'm with the others and want to punch Michael.
  • All of their auditions seem tough.  I know that I wouldn't have auditioned back when I was a freshman, because it was my first year of actual singing.  My friends would have needed to talk me into it, I think.
Not much to this episode because it was auditions, but I hope to hear more music in the next one.

"Taps"

There's A Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow

I put on my t-shirt with the schematic of the Space Mountain vehicle today, and walked to the movie theater to watch "Tomorrowland".

  • Love the opening logo!
  • I wish that pin wasn't orange and blue, but I know those are the colors that the CMs wear in Tomorrowland, so whatever.  Does that have to be my future?
  • GBBT music!  It's A Small World!  1964 World's Fair!  Jetpack! Happiness.
  • That set is amazing.  WOW.
  • Giacchino's music is gorgeous, as usual.
  • Athena was cute and mysterious and she kicked butt.
  • Britt Robertson does a fine job as the optimistic Casey.  I love her wide-eyed reactions to everything.
  • Clooney.  Love.  Always.
  • I always knew that Eiffel Tower was more than just a tower.  I knew it!
  • Space Mountain!
  • It's Keegan-Michael Key again!  (Just saw him in Pitch Perfect 2).
  • The next time I ride IASW, I'm going to be looking for that laser.
  • "I will never give up."
  • "Dreamers should be with other dreamers."
I really liked this movie.  I might see it again in the theater because I really liked the cinematography.

Pitch Perfect 2: A Capella Boogaloo

We're back, Pitches!  Bro, V and I hightailed it to the AMC in Fallbrook to see Pitch Perfect 2, and we had big leather reclining seats, but the only seats left online were in the front row, so my neck ached by the end of the movie.  But we had fun!

  • Opening Universal logo was done in a capella by Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins, which was a great start to the movie.
  • How could we not love this thing?  After that opening, a marching band.  Then a capella.  I mean, YEAH, baby!
  • Not enough Treblemakers.  Or, "Treblahmeckers".  I want to hear more Jesse!
  • Too much Bumper.  He was already a little too much in the first movie, so this was way too much for me.  I did like his story with Fat Amy, especially the pause in her serenade to him, but I didn't need to see that much of it.
  • I love the way Anna Kendrick does her throwaway lines about the woman from DSM.  "Your sweat smells like cinnamon!"
  • Pentatonix! Filharmonics!  Hi, you guys!!!
  • Cried.  Twice, I think.  Maybe more than that.  That campfire scene.  The Worlds.  Sigh.
  • That battle was intense.  I love those battles.  I don't know if I would have been able to participate in one back in my college days, but that would have been fun.
  • Do you think that Snoop Dogg/Lion will really release a Christmas album now?
  • I like that "Flashlight" song.  I need to stop typing for a moment and get that CD.
  • Packers.  So randomly aca-awesome.
I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me.  No, really.  I keep singing songs from the CD that I just purchased.

Because I can't get enough of these riff-offs, especially when they involve Anna Kendrick:

"Sherry" by Bob Gaudio, as performed by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

Watching "Jersey Boys" on HBO tonight....how could I *not* choose this song for today's blog?  :)

I've Got No Strings On Me

Like about a billion people, I saw "Avengers: Age of Ultron" last weekend.  Linda and I decided to see it in 3D, which turned out to be a good thing, because we didn't have to wait in line, and our theater wasn't totally full.

  • That opening scene with all of the Avengers in action together looked like a comic book come to life, especially the freeze frame.  (Yes, I know that this is based on a comic book).
  • "Language!"
  • I want to live at Hawkeye's house.
  • Spader!  Awesome as usual.
  • I'm never going to hear that song from Pinocchio the same way again.
  • I don't think that all of those Korea shots were authentic.  Not enough Hyundais.
  • Love the scene of the guys all trying to pick up Thor's hammer, especially the look on Thor's face when the hammer moves for Cap..
  • "Well, I was born yesterday."
  • "He's fast, she's weird."
  • "Is Thor going to be there?"
  • " Every time someone tries to stop a war before it starts, innocent people die. Every time."
Fun movie, looking forward to the next one!
